Does the bandana even do anything?

You've confirmed nothing other than NPCs remark on what you wear, which happens with a lot of clothing items in game.

Does it actually function? Hardly.

I wasn't trying to confirm anything, I was sharing an anecdote, and sorry but you are wrong, wearing the bandana will mean that NPC who sees you committing a crime - whether that be looting, killing, etc - will come and investigate, but they will not know that it is you. So they may run off to tell the authorities, but as long as you ride away and escape, you will not receive a bounty.

If you are NOT wearing a bandana when committing a crime, and a witness sees you, then runs to the law, you will then get a bounty, as it states in the upper right of the screen, displaying your name and the price of bounty. Wearing the bandana means the law will only come to investigate once the NPC witness has reached them, but they won't be able to tell them who committed the crime. So yes, the bandana DOES function my friend.

we just have to get better at not hitting the wrong buttons at the wrong time...happened to me too. already have a 36$ bounty on me.

Ugh, so many times. Why is the "mount horse" button the same button as "assult the nearest civilian" button?

Keeps happening at the St Denis trapper since theres so many people around there, and St Denis is very annoying to be wanted in because you cant get to the train station to pay the bounty without being shot.

Sorry, but this just isn't how it actually ends up functioning half of the time

It is, if you play correctly.

this is just stupid

i went and tried to rob a backroom business with a new outfit and bandana on and I got a $90 bounty when I only took $50

i know r* is trying to be realistic here but this isn’t fun anymore

Nope, bandana is definitely inconsistent and not working as intended. I did the Saint Denis gunsmith backroom robbery twice. On both occasions, I walked into the gunsmith with the bandana on and carried everything out as normal. On one try, I lost my bounty once I rode out of Saint Denis and took my bandana off after the Wanted level was gone. On the other try, after doing the exact same thing, the bounty remained. It's glitched for sure.

It just makes witnesses less likely to identify you when they see you again.

Yeah...Doubt that. Show me any kind of proof that there's levels to how the NPCs react to a crime and I will change my mind. Until then it's most likely something that players think is implemented.

That quote was directly out of the official strategy guide brother. I can screenshot it if you would like.

Sure, if you like. I still haven't seen any in-game proof of it though. Seems to me that it's a thing that developers say before launch, but can be interpreted i different ways.

I just saw a guy robbing this back business and he did it without a mask, not a single witnesses and no bounty..

Are you guys shooting at everyone or something?

System's completely broken and random, then.

How do you play correctly, then? Because I still haven't the faintest idea.

EDIT: Watched the videos above and read the older posts. I'm still not having luck with it. Plus, if that's actually how it works and only how it works, then I am still disappointed. It only covering your identity until your Wanted level goes full red, which then makes lawmen somehow see through your mask, just straight up violates common sense.

I mean mugging someone isn't exactly a reason to kill them.

Well it was accidental, and I literally just punched him 3 or 4 times and he died. I find it way to easy to run over people and they insta die as well when my horse is going really slow. It is funny to watch though, but it drives me nuts since Im trying to play a honorable Arthur this run.

I also find it annoying that the bandana does nothing at all. I can wear it and still get bounties half the time.

It’s easier to solve a rubix cube blindfolded and handcuffed then trying to manage the bandana system

Its not broken, it’s just not fun.

You're going off on something you think you understand from a few videos.

The system is janky and stupid, and no matter how hard you believe there's a "proper" way to play it, its entirely inconsistent, and the game doesn't seem care about whatever methods you use as you decide to do something.

And no, I don't play running around gunning everyone down.

I made these videos.

Listen, feel free to record some clip or whatever to show what's up, in any case I personally enjoy and have fun with the actual system so far despite the few issue.

Sounds like I've just been lucky so far; in the miniscule amount of time I've had to play:

  • Took out a small gang camp
  • Taught three bridge muggers a permanent lesson
  • Killed a generic remote camper

All without being seen or reported. But then again, all were in relatively remote locations, and I try to hide the bodies. Catch is, if you take the time to try and hide the bodies instead of quickly riding away, you run the risk of being caught...hiding the bodies by passerby spawn. lol

What's ridiculous though--and definitely needs to be changed--is how pathetically aggressive the AI is in trying to "start something" with you.

Ride six feet off the trail past an NPC programmed to cause problems, and he'll say something like: "Don't you bother me!"

Come on, Rockstar... even riding past the guy in my own "trail lane" shouldn't trigger that kind of reaction--let alone six feet off the trail!

That's just stupid scripting.

Also, NPCs (unless they're pre-scripted B.A. Baracus wannabes) should give you room on the trail/path to at least pass by.

This is implemented when you ride fast, incoming NPC's give you room.

^^ IMO it should happen regardless of speed; common courtesy.

FWIW, the bandanna is kind of like the new "calling Lester" when you're already too close to the LSPD. lol

Haven't experienced it myself yet, but from watching gameplay, it appears city police are nothing new; endlessly spawning out of the blue until you (somehow) lose them like the LSPD.

I don't agree, back then and even today in 2018, people were and are rarely fair and courteous to each other.

It does make sense when you arrive fast tho, any human being with common sense will try to dodge a collision to avoid dying/being hurt.

I mean, in any case if you ride or bump 'willingly' into NPC's, there can be troubles, that's for sure.

I found a great video that someone just uploaded that explains fully the bounty system, and how it IS working as intended, your problem is no doubt the fact that the law reach your position and see you, meaning they instantly will recognise you, or, as I said before, the witness has recognised you and made it to the law. Just watch the video, it is very well explained...

Doesn't explain an instant $500 bounty for blowing a train safe in the mountains with no passengers or lawmen on or around thousands of miles from where the train went missing
