SPOILER:Dutch van der Linde / Dramatic Irony

I'm getting a strong sense of dramatic irony in regards to Dutch.

For those of you here that played RDR1... I have a question for you.

Does it make you sad seeing Dutch before he went insane? He genuinely seems like a good person. In the prologue, he stopped Micah from terrorizing that girl and comforted her. It's just heart wrenching for me to see how he was before descending into madness, and his eventual death in RDR1. I don't know, after playing the game tonight, when I turned off the console, I left with a somewhat sad feeling. And I'm only like 10 missions into the game. It's an emotion I've never felt before from any form of media; not one book, movie, television show, or any other video game has ever struck me with this feeling.

I feel as if this game compliments the first RDR1 incredibly well. Both games act as companion pieces to each other. Another example is Javier going to save John... with Javier basically saying "I know John would do the same for me". Only for Javier to later be killed by John in RDR1.

Consider this view: Dutch never lost his mind. RDR2 revealed that Dutch had the most consistent philsophy of any character in the series -- he never went insane, his values and purpose for his lifestyle were just vastly different than his compatriots.

It is made clear through Dutch's displays of intellectualism and sophistication (think of his massive library in the Cochinay mountains in RDR1 or his contemplation of chess strategy in his fight against the Pinkertons in RDR2) that he was very likely born into wealth and leisure, becoming an outlaw by choice and not by force or circumstance. Dutch's life as an outlaw was a protest against unwanted enroachment of big government and crony capitalism, while his friends were outlaws because they had to be to survive, not because of a developed political philosophy. When the results of their purposes began to contradict each other, we seen John (who has a family he values more than his commitment to Dutch's philosophy) and Arthur (a man just trying survive) begin to defect because they were not willing to die for Dutch's cause.

Dutch was a Che Guevara living amongst simple bandits, without a Fidel Castro alongside him to materialize his revolution.

Crony capitalism not a real thing. Since capitalism involves the right to private property. Corny socialism is more appropriate term due to the government taking away private property rights and telling people what to do with their property.

snowman hit the nail on the head. i thought about dutch after i finished the game and i came to the conclusion that he was never a tough guy and always needed a gang to live out his fantasies.

Lol tell me just one government that doesn't tell people what to do or not to do with their property and lacks the power to take away properties.

They use to call that "the laws".

Dutch is one of the best characters R* ever did. I always found that he should have been in RDR1 more. I don’t know if he lost his mind. I guess it’s more like he becomes more and more desperate while still keeping faith that the gang will survive. I saw him as a crazy character in RDR1, but now I see that more as if he has kept his faith, even after he lost his gang and made a new one.

You know what was really chilling... seeing Jack behind Arthur when Arthur was confronted by Milton and Ross for the first time. That little guy behind Arthur ends up well you know... I thought that scene was like a crazy mind f*ck.

I f*cked flipped out in that scene. I was wondering when they were gonna show up, and that was a great introduction. And I thought the same. That fate would bring Jack to take out Ross

The devil masquerades as an angel of light.

I think that @Snowman's description of Dutch's character and philosophy is great. It's ultimately the one that Dutch would espouse.

I would argue that the events of Red Dead Redemption 2 expose Dutch for who he really is. He's not a protective father figure like he purports to be, he's legitimately evil. Most evil people don't view themselves as evil. They're products of their environment, doing it for the greater good, etc. They have a rationalization.

But what fruit does Dutch's actions bear? Death and chaos and suffering. And what are these actions for? The love of money. And ultimately, for himself.

Arthur is the wise king, Dutch is the narcissistic tyrant. Everyone else are their subjects. Pieces on the chessboard.

Arthur is the perfect counterpoint to Dutch. He is light, Dutch is shadow.
