If Arthur has low honour, he won't remove his hat when visiting Mary for the first time.

I've played that mission probly a hundred times and only noticed Arthur doesn't remove his hat if you don't wear a hat there to begin with. Good catch.

You can give the guy building the house by Valentine lumber instead of money to help him with building

I tried to do this. Went straight over to Appleseed and... no timber. Camped nearby and slept and went back... no timber.

And so on and so on. Just couldn't get any timber to appear there for the life of me.

Went back to the house trying to figure out if I had maybe done something wrong and it gave me the option of changing my mind and giving him money instead. Thought that was a nice little touch.

Next time I went over Appleseed way, guess what? They had timber! 😂

i don´t think it depends on Honor.

i think it depends on the type of hat you wear.

like if it´s a special hat that would clip when holding it, then he doesn´t take it off.

to my knowledge

This is correct. Just tested it out.

Does it depend on what stage you're at with the Appleseed storyline/progression maybe? I was never given the option of getting timber for the house but I think it's because I'd already completed the Appleseed stuff and the company/part of the forest was already gone. Apparently you can finish these things as early as you want (Appleseed, the house and the railway line were already finished/built for me in Chapter 2).

There is a time threshold for area completion after you finish all the events with each. I don't know exactly how long needs to pass, but I have a Ch.2 save with all the events completed. The trees are all cut down and the rails run to Emerald Station, so it's doable yes. It's probly one in-game week, but it might also be like 3 or 5 days. Time frames for this game are all over the place.

EDIT: The house is also built and inhabited, with the garden out front and all that. All three side mission strands are do-able in Ch.2.

I had wondered that myself. I hadn't actually been to Appleseed at this point in my playthrough (earlyish in Chapter 2) as I had just stuck in The Heartlands mainly so it gave me a prompt to find them. I wonder if it was something to do with the fact that I hadn't actually started the Appleseed event that caused the timber to be constantly missing once I actually ventured there. Or maybe you have to complete the Appleseed event chain up to the wolf attack and then you can purchase the timber in the time gap between then and them packing up and moving on. Might try that on my next playthrough and see what happens. I can't remember now whether I had got up to the wolf attack on this playthrough when the timber appeared. I'd definitely helped the trapped worker from under the fallen tree though.

It could be a time of day issue too. Maybe you have to get to Appleseed at around a set time (early morning for example) for timber to be available.

I have recently started playing this game again and am just starting CH2. I have not completed the Americans at Rest mission yet so Charles and Javier are in Valentine. Has anyone seen before that if you rob the Gunsmith in Valentine Charles and Javier come running over to the gunsmith to help you get out of town? Is this a common thing with other robberies? I know that the gang can come help you break out of Jail, but I didn't know they come to help with robberies. I don't believe they come when you rob the doctor unfortunately. Curious?

Ive seen videos of Charles and Javier in free-roam shooting their way out of Valentine, but unsure if thats done during the robbery. I just assumed it was cause of a jailbrake when you get spotted trying to escape, the companion (probably not Abigail?) will help you out by shooting at the law. Would cool to see a video if anyone has if its done during a robbery.

They do not assist you with robberies. Any crimes committed near a mission marker will cause that mission to become unavailable. Then companions will assist you with dealing with the law. Once that is done they will get on their horses and leave the area. So basically you get to have companions for a short amount of time until the law is dealt with unlike with the companion glitch where they will stick to you the whole time.

exactly. every time i've played this game i've had sh*t luck on the first attempt making it to Javier and Charles because I forget what the stealthiest route is to the mission marker. the Blackwater "lockdown" on top of the New Austin snipers is a stupid way to break game immersion. let's punish the player for trying to start a mission because of Pinkerton spam.

If Arthur gets into a gunfight before Americans at Rest is completed in Valentine, then Charles and Javier will come out of the saloon and help him.  This can happen with other gang members too. John can help you in Valentine before The Sheep and the Goats if he sees you're in a gunfight or fight. Someone even posted a video on youtube of Lenny helping Arthur in Saint Denis before Urban Pleasures. I am guessing you need to start trouble or get into a fight near the mission marker.

or let trouble start on its own like in Blackwater lol. i've had it happen there. the weirdest time the companion glitch triggered was at camp in Beaver Hollow shortly after it was setup in chapter 6. i don't know how it triggered, but everyone was cowering in fear at something that wasn't there, and one of the camp members was marked as a companion, I think Javier. I got it recorded a while ago, I'll see if I can get it uploaded momentarily.

Edit: got it uploaded with more context to when it happened, but not really an explanation:

The first part of Advertising, the New American Art involves you speaking to Abigail. This doesn't play out like most mission openers as there is no cut scene. Instead Abigail just walks up and approaches you like it's a random camp conversation.

Somehow Ive never seen this alternate "scene" when you rescue John in chapter 1. If you dont refill your stamina when the tooltip shows up, Javier will give Arthur bourbon he will immediately drink. At 7:30 here.

I actually didn't know it was an optional cutscene and always assumed it was part of the mission. I collected all the provisions from the Adler place but saved them for later freeroam in Ch2. Wonder if there's any more like that which I'm not aware of.

The amount of stuff like this that you don't know is in the game is staggering. I will have to remember this one for my next play through.

the mission from Dutch "The New South" is just like that.

no opening cutscene, just you talking to dutch at the shore like a camp interaction

Very true. It cancelled out my camp chore to trigger that! 😂

This might be well known but if you dont get the oil wagon in time, John will get it himself and an alternate cutscene will play out

Just come across a distraught woman in Valentine claiming I killed her husband. Could be true as I have killed a few people in Valentine! But a bit like Arthur, I didn't know who she was actually referring to. The game let me give her $2 for an honour boost.

Seen a video on that but never came across it myself. I guess it's honour based?

You can find another naval compass to give to Pearson or keep for yourself on Ashton's stagecoach on the mission "Fatherhood and Other Dreams - II", skip to 11:33.

No idea what triggered it. I do have high honour though. I'm in Chapter 4 and I had headed back to Valentine to meet the twins.
