Things you didn't know about RDR2 until now

I was watching this guy's video about RDR2 and I noticed something I didn't know before, at 20:13 he becomes wanted because he is standing suspiciously in a rich neighborhood of Saint Denis, even though he didn't make nothing too serious like trespassing into a mansion (which I already knew it's a crime before), robbing someone or whatever. There are so many hidden mechanics in this game, also I'm sure he could've just talked with the officer and moved away to avoid being chased, but he pulled his gun out.

This is great fun to mess around with, but it only seems to work at Pike's Basin. I tried the Bridges by Valentine and Butcher Creek too but they don't freak out like that one

You get different dialogue from Karen if you kill her abuser rather than beat him up in Polite Society.

I've found two owl spawns that are reliably active 24 hours a day: atop a rockface overlooking dry creekbed in Tall Trees, and next to a boulder along the Little Creek River southeast of Hanging Dog Ranch.

(Side note.) I got another Californian near Fort Riggs. It was flying from Tall Trees, so I doubt it was the one I know of that comes from Blackwater. I was around the fort for eight or so minutes so it may have also come from flying over the Upper Montana. My encounters with Calis out there are so few and far between that it's near impossible to call origin for sure. Noted in my maps, though.

There are a ton of scoreless small bird spawns atop rocks along both the Dakota and Kamassa Rivers, as well as on bridge railings across the map. Found every small bird on most. Woodpeckers, robins, orioles, sparrows, jays, cardinals, etc. Only bird I've yet to find scoreless is a Pileated Woodpecker.

There is a scoreless varmint spawn atop a fallen tree trunk southeast of Fort Wallace.

Two Robins spawn on the south shore of the Upper Montana River right near the water (southwest of Lone Mule Stead).

Woodpeckers will land on tree trunks. This is stupidly uncommon for me, and I've seen them only when not looking for them. IIRC in Black Bone Forest and on the west side of the Kamassa River. If anyone else knows of other places they've seen woodpeckers perched on the side of tree trunks, let me know and I'll add them in: https://github.com/subvod/rdr2-maps#birds

A random small bird will spawn atop the moose southwest of Fairvale Shanty. So far I've seen it's been mostly Blue Jays, though.

A static model of the black sheep with the bell and necktie (roaming around west of Heartland Overflow) can be found next to a half naked dead body at Guthrie Farm.

(Another side note.) Cougars with gray coats are already less common than orange/rust coats, but for some reason the only three star gray cougars I run across are one in every four or five grays. Maybe it's just coincidental, idk. But damn, few thousand hours in this game makes it seem less coincidental, lol.

I have not been able to get the "moose chased by wolf" encounter at Calumet Ravine on PC. I'd seen it twice back on XB1, but not even once on PC. Unsure as to why.

There is an encounter with the Murphy Brood along the path going north from Elysian Pool where they will spare you and allow you to go on about your business. First time I've seen that was just yesterday. Unsure if it had anything to do with not killing the two Murphys who confront you the first time you set up camp in Roanoke Ridge. I've always killed them right after the confrontational encounter, but this time around I didn't. Might be linked, idk. The other two ambush encounters with Murphys played out as usual later on, though. Same with the kidnapped women in body wagons and the special one where you take her back to Annesburg. (That one also has a unique sketch associated with it.)

The ex-soldier from Fort Riggs (the guy with the Native American Ring) can be found west of Doverhill. Searched all the few known spawn locations I knew of and ran across him at random whilst cougar hunting up there. He's closer to the river shore than Doverhill.

The painting in Bayall Edge can only be seen completed (and sketched in the journal) in the Epilogue. I actually never knew it was a point of interest, nor did I know of the Strange Man showing up in the mirror, until recently. Never played RDR1, so I looked up some cutscenes and good God did they pick the right voice actor for that role.

People bitten by snakes in random encounters will take only regular Health Cures. Baffles me as to why a Potent or Special Health Cure won't suffice, yet a single, puny shot of Tylenol will do just fine. :/

Unsure if purely coincidental, but I've run across way more "rare" spawns (moose in general, owls, cougars, etc) while having akimbo Cattleman Revolvers both having the Hero Grip equipped. Might just be my own mind playing games with me, but I see way less when having any other sidearm equipped.

During preset world sequences, such as rival gang ambushes after setting up camp, the M1899 pistol will be automatically equipped as a primary if you own it. That's also regardless of what you have equipped beforehand and will happen even if you have two M1899s stored in locker.

Camp activities can be done all around the map, not just inside of camp. https://github.com/subvod/rdr2-maps#activites

That's funny, when I found a Western Bull Moose in O'Creagh's Run I was also carrying two Cattleman Revolvers with Hero Grips and a Carcano Rifle, interesting...

Yeah, I was standing on top of a rock and wanted to see if I could deal with these three wolves that had surrounded me without killing them. As soon as I put on Cover Scent they started whimpering and wandered off

I guess I didn't smell like something to eat anymore

Might just be like a survivor's bias sort of deal, so to speak. Seems like I get way more rare spawns and encounters versus carrying anything else. Haven't run across the two bucks fighting outside of Horseshoe for months since I've been running M1899s. Switched to hero grip Cattlemans and kablam, I've seen the encounter three times since Chapter 2 while just passing by them.

Also seems people have been able to get a panther up at Macomb's. Idk how, but I'll check around there later today just to see if they're not bullsh*tting. I've wasted so much time crawling around there looking for even a single pawprint when I could have just went over to Lakay or Catfish Jacksons and got myself tore up. Even then, I would still have a panther in the end...

Coincidence? I don't think so.

I've found many panthers in Macomb's End already, so they're definitely not bullsh*tting.

Although you can't actually hurt Joe, Cleet,  Dutch  and Micah when they're pursuing you in the mission Red Dead Redemption, you can lasso and hogtie them, though this almost always fails the mission for losing either  John or your horse. I managed to hogtie Micah once but the other three killed me before I could heal.

Lord have mercy. Found one 03:46 foggy. That's the first time I've ever found one there in a few thousand hours in this game. Thought it was an online-only spawn like the one down at Stillwater all this time...

Also found another Cali at Fort Riggs. Was coming from Strawberry Stable and saw it take off from a lower ledge facing the river. Now, at least, we have a concrete static perch spawn north of the Upper Montana. Wonder when the CodeWalker team will merge support for RDR2.

It seems that after completing The King's Son NPCs will randomly comment on Arthur's failing health, especially if you antagonize them. I've been playing chapter 6 for awhile and up until then only the Bartenders and Shopkeepers commented, now everyone is. Had some dude tell me I looked sick, and I ignored a prostitute and she said she didn't want to get her other patrons sick anyway, I've also had Sheriffs comment on it when insulted

Amidst this last run through, I never got any sickness dialogue from Sheriff Malloy or Chief Lambert. Not sure if they even have any, but I did get dialog from Thomas and Farley. All of the shop owners around the map have unique dialog. Postal workers have all the same dialog except for Alden and and albino guy in Van Horn. Random NPCs will sometimes comment on Arthur's sickly look. Wasn't that common for me though. Idk about Sheriff Freeman or the shop owners out in New Austin, though. I'll have to check that out later today.

I'd played through the story six or seven times until I found out about the unique dialog. It was just another immersive nugget to add to the already numerous fantastic things about this gem of a game. :)

Sheriff Malloy was one of the first to comment on it for me after I finished the mission

If you shoot an animal in water, you can lasso and drag their corpse to shore.

It only works with certain animals.

Also depends on how far out they are from you. It's helped me a fair few times. Shoot a buck or pronghorn, it lands just right, then gets swept away by the current. Always gotta cross your fingers and hope it's within lassoing range though. It's not a bad strat, either. For rarer animals, I always haul the spent carcasses to water and dump them. If the water you dump them in is deep enough for them to float, you don't have to worry about them going to bones over the next 72 hours (or however long it is). It works the same as donating/selling the entire carcass. Drag it to shore, skin it, then just send it right back out lol.

Since you mention water, I gotta say just a few hours ago I discovered you can use a boat for what it's meant for in this game: collecting animals that fall out into the water. Been a great displeasure shooting loons over the shoreline only for them to glide another 20 miles out into what amounts to an ocean. Saw a pirogue at the dock in Annesburg, hopped in, paddled out to it, and got my pacific without issue. Same goes for snakes, too. WAAYYYY easier snake hunting in the mud shallows around Lagras now. Ain't gotta worry about wading around the 20 foot gators in chest high water.

You can save Algernon Wasp from choking to death on a peanut during The Gilded Cage. No idea that even existed until earlier today. I knew he, as well as the cocaine lady from Bastille Saloon who if her mouth is open she's complaining, both attend the party in the mission. Being I just uploaded a new completionist save to Nexus two days ago... the one document that save doesn't have is Algernon's Business Card he gives you when you save him in The Gilded Cage. Ah sh*t, here we go again back to square zero.

The only way I've found to prevent the hero grip on the Cattleman from glitching to a wood texture is not buying any other grips/varnishes at all. Buying new Cattlemans and going straight to the hero grip seems to do the trick. Had some luck switching to regular pearl grip, then to hero grip, but it ended up tripping back over going into Chapter 6. No clue what may have caused it. Same sort of deal with the Bolt Action Rifle. It randomly goes to the default varnish color without warning. That, I haven't found a fix for.

The Bow is the only weapon which allows you to do the full, two-handed cover scent application animation.

Arthur can get the Bolt Action Rifle early during The First Shall Be Last by knifing the first two guards with Javier, then first killing the one on the left in the next team up the hill a ways. If you don't kill him in one hit, miss, or whatever else, he won't drop the Bolt Action.

Arthur's closed winter coat can no longer be saved using the old horse outfit swap after coming into Horseshoe. Idk when that was patched, let alone why, but it is what it is. No worries though because trainers.

In an encounter with the Moonshiners near Trapper's Cabin in Bluewater, the dude asked for some plant he'd never seen before with pink flowers. I had both oleander and milkweed on me at the time, but I'd already done the encounter where they wanted milkweed on the other side of the river like another few hundred feet from where they were earlier. Arthur did the usual "orly? I actually got that on me" line, so I just walked over to the still and the prompt was "Add Oleander Plants". I focused on both of them and no "Decline" option ever arose, so I just tossed them in. Evidently the guy got poisoned and the other one opened fire on me shouting how I'd poisoned the other guy. Live and learn, I guess.

On that note, found out today that Ginseng isn't the only plant that cures poison. English Mace does, too. If only I'd have tossed in some mace with the oleander.

I don't recall where I read it, but someone mentioned there was a bookshelf in Beecher's. Never knew until I checked. Shows how much time I spend around the house, I guess.

It isn't possible to obtain all newspapers. I've known about this for some time, but starting a new save today I checked around to buy up all the newspapers right after Eastward Bound... you can only buy one from a single paper boy. On the same level as not being able to get all four night folk and murfree brood notes...

Was also tallying up the effectiveness of the Varmint Rifle against small game. Snakes, birds, and what not. Seems to work out an average of a 30% chance to land a perfect pelt if the animal started as a perfect from the get go. Kind of a trash rate, but the range and velocity of the Varmint Rifle outweighs the cut to quality for me. What's strange is the chance didn't deviate from about 30% regardless of shot placement. Hit 10 red bellies in a row, all perfect... 3 perfect carcasses. Then again, "one in three" sounds way more optimistic than "30%".

Quail spawn way down in southeastern Gaptooth Ridge near the border of Rio Bravo. Only found one spot down there so far, but another two in Hennigan's and six in Great Plains.

Coastal and Great Horned Owls spawn all the way up around Colter. Even saw one just south of Colter swoop down and catch a rat in what looks like a foot and a half of snow. Also seen a few cruising by the summit of Mount Hagen.

A bat swarm spawns every night atop the two story house west of Tumbleweed. Desert bats was a new concept to me until I actually read up on them. Yes, they exist. You learn something new every day.

Large fish can be broken down in a needlessly hacky way. Set up camp, catch large fish, walk to campfire, cook, *black screen warps to kneeling at campsite*, stow first cooked piece, behold your four pieces of gritty for a 19lb channel cat. Or... your six pieces of gritty from a 14lb gar. Fish have different meat quantity yields despite weight differences: https://github.com/subvod/rdr2-maps/blob/main/README.MD#weather-baits-and-bite-sequences

I love the detail of this game - It struck me the other day when I went into the cave at the top of Big Valley and when you Initially walk in its pitch black but slowly you get some vision just like irl with your eyes adjusting.

It really is a masterpiece

Momma Watson's grave will appear outside her cabin even if you pistol whip her to knock her out. If you don't want the grave to show up, you *have* to either run right after killing or sons or tie her up then leave.

Pearson's scout jacket request can be semi-cheesed by committing suicide at camp: https://youtu.be/bOK1uhERX7E

Rats can be found in the wilderness, albeit uncommon.

Double varmint spawns will yield two varmints of the area at random. This includes those down in New Austin, where you might even run across a pair of armadillos or gila monsters.

The Black Tailed Rattlesnake can be found near the cliffs on the north side of the Upper Montana River. Can't remember exactly where, other than it was southeast of Fort Riggs.

An easy way to complete random encounters one after another is to complete an event, run a short distance away until those bodies despawn, save and reload game, continue to next event. Given the time frame for the event(s) is still met, you can bust through event after event. Just did this with all the Nite Folk and Murfree Brood events myself.

Small fish (Perch, Rock Bass, Bluegill, and Pickerel) will only bite lures during missions which involve fishing. Outside of missions, they'll only bite the Special Spinner.

There's a cougar spawn inside the yard fence to the left of the front entrance at Manito Glade. Unsure if it's active before killing the Hermit Man. I've seen a cougar there only twice.

A cougar spawns in the daytime eating an NPC corpse northeast of the first 'N' in "HENNIGAN'S STEAD". I'm curious as to why the similar spawn along the shore east of Doverhill is scoreless and this one in Hennigan's isn't.

I didn't know about this glitch until a few days ago and decided to try it out. It's very hard to pull off and it works only 30% of the time but it's worth trying in my opinion.

You can shoot Wrobel and continue with the mission given you don't kill him. I accidentally shot him while attempting to aim at him and he fell to the ground. The dialog and mission played out as it normally does, except he had a bullet hole in his chest.

All food items yield a single bonding point when fed to your horse when it already has full cores... except for Sugar Cube and Peppermint. Both give 5 bonding points. Brushing and petting/calming both give 6 points. Idk about horse meal yet, haven't hit Chapter 3 yet. Horse Care Package from Stables gives only 2 points.

Small birds spawn on the water north of the bridge northeast of Maclean's House.

Liquor is not available in the Strawberry Shop's catalogue, being a dry town and what not. However Bourbon and Gin are available from the shelves at a premium. Bourbon is $7.50 and Gin is $4.20.

Cutter De Blanc

The infinite Stamina Cheat has no effect in water

The mirror at Bayall Edge can only be damaged from behind

If you spend a few days away from Pronghorn Ranch during the first epilogue, when you return you'll get a little cutscene where Abigail was worried about you

Also it's way faster to increase the bond level with a horse when it has full cores than when they're drained to some extent.

If you fire your weapon during night time in Saint Denis people inside mansions will wake up and turn their lights on. Never noticed that before.
