The best game ever made.. ever?

There's a lot of reviews stating its one of the best games of this generation, and some say it's the best game of all time, and judging by the ratings it received (a 97% average on Metacritic for the PS4 I think and numerous 10/10 scores), there's no doubt that Rockstar Games have done a fantastic job producing, writing, developing and testing the game over a period of time, to ensure that this tradition continues from their previous incarnations, like GTA San Andrea's, GTA IV and Red Dead Redemption.

But that's a matter of opinion. I won't challenge anyone if they say it's the best, because I have yet to play it, and I haven't seen gameplay videos so my point is invalid...for now.

All I can say is that the scenery and atmosphere looks fantastic and the story and setting is fit for purpose, so that's a few things they have done right.

There are minimum frame drops on XBOX ONE X. check out digital foundry.

Digital Foundry never test all of a game. They only tests parts. They even say that. Still drops to 21fps even on a Xbox One X at any point isn't great.

Only one, one exact point drops to 21 FPS. The rest of the game is 30 with at best minor drops. It's probably just a bug.

Woah hold on with the hyperbole, it's only just came out, let it breath, we all said the same about GTAV when we were still playing the intro missions.

Well precisely.

I still think that GTAV is outstanding for the first 20 or so missions. Then Steve Haynes turns up and the story goes horribly off the rails.

But from my first few hours, I find RDR2 absolutely beautiful, immersive and gripping - despite it's slow pace. And from looking through the compendium, and the lists of animals, challenges, collectables, story missions etc. etc. it's certainly colossal! I can see this taking me many, many months to finish.......

Shadowfennekin

So far, yep!

I already love Arthur and I've only spent 3 hours with him so far. Right now I think he has the potential to knock John Marston down as the best protagonist

Soon as I unlocked freeroam I started exploring Valentine and it's a small thriving community that just looks spectacular, knocking a lot of the GTA cities and even the RDR ones out of the water! I can't wait to arrive in Blackwater and Armadillo to see what they look like!

And I love how they brought some SA stuff back. It doesn't seem too intrusive either, you need to take care of Arthur. Helps make the experience more immersive!

Not a fan of the realistic horse summoning though.... I prefer the old method in RDR

The crafting stuff has me a bit confused though, it's not as clear as Far Cry's "Just kill and skin ____".... so I'm not exactly a fan of that right now. My opinion may change later, I plan on fully upgrading my camp so I'll be doing a lot of hunting it looks like.

Best is most certainly subjective as to me, MGS1 is the best to me, but RDR2 is definitely the definitive game of this generation. This is the first game to actually feel current/next gen and we're at the end of this generation's development cycle.

I’m very excited to play it but as experiences it will be hard to top Skyrim, Mass Effect or Deus Ex Human revolution.

experiences though aren’t necessarily qualifiable...gaming can be an emotional experience and for that better or worse doesn’t come into it.

Autechre once said the reason they make music (many people would say they’re no longer making music) devoid of emotion and as a pure technical exercise of sound was because the use of emotions give an unfair advantage and can allow nostalgia to taint judgement at a later date.

im excited to play this in 4k on my brand new X regardless.

I'm sorry but the tone, music, graphics and just the smoothness of the gameplay is like nothing i've ever experienced before

I've had my heart clench, my jaw drop and like goosebumps so many times (bare in mind this could just be nostalgia factor). More so than anything i've experienced before.

I'm not gonna call it the best game ever... yet... but it's been a long time since a game has made me feel this way. Probably since RDR 1.

The N. Bellic Man

Yes, it's pretty early to state a thing like that. That being said the only thing I would complain at this point is the menu. I can't find an extensive stats menu anywhere. And where is the usual "brief" section? Overall it's been a very good and immersive experience.

No. The driving physics aren't all that responsive, space combat is similarly sluggish, there aren't enough meaningful ways to allocate skill points, and unit strategies wind up as just variations of 'zerg rush'.

:p

...serious point, though - that's like saying Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band is the "best music ever made". It'd be debatable as the best rock recording ever, considering that's a category that also includes Electric Ladyland and A Night at the Opera.

So in the same way, RDR2 definitely marks the most advanced evolution of the R* open-world formula thus far - but there are choices it makes where other open-world GTA-likes have gone in the opposite direction, both with good reason, and one is only really "better" than the other if it that specific different thing is what you prefer.

I have always considered RDR 1 one of the best game ever.

I have ~20 hours in RDR 2 and did multiple things. This is also one of the best game ever.

Visually it certainly looks amazing. Took so damn long to install last night I only played two missions before falling asleep on the sofa.

It is almost certain to be regarded as one of the best games ever. From what I have seen and played so far, it is a yardstick to which all other developers must now try to aspire.

Best game ever though, for me, is INSIDE. Simply because that game is disturbing as hell.

Again, Digital Foundry don't test 100% of a game. They just test random pieces of a game and go with that. But could just be a few drops. Still not good in my book. Feel bad for people on base consoles.

RIP ...videogames, I guess - considering that maybe only a handful of companies have the resources and autonomy to even attempt something on a par with a contemporary R* title (CDPR would be one example - Ubisoft could, but not unless they shifted away from annual franchise releases and pooled more of their studios on to a single project at a time).

Honestly, I think it's better that most games don't try to do that - bit like how you could remake the original Star Wars tomorrow for $45 million ($11 million back in 1977), or make something like Baby Driver for $35 million, compared to making something like The Force Awakens/Rogue One/The Last Jedi for over $250 million a pop. You can make some lavish, ground-breaking spectacle if you've got the money to throw at it, but that doesn't necessarily make for a better end experience.

Best Game so far. For this generation, I would say it's the best game.

The title of best game normally gets given to newer games down the line generally due to better budget of the game or less hardware restrictions.

I haven't seen any killer games so far except for RDR2 and imo, only Rockstars future games could possibly compete with RDR2.

Also, people have different opinions or tastes.

No, but it's good enough to keep me busy until the best game ever does in fact release, GTA 6.

I'm almost upset at how good it is. This means we won't get anything this good for another 10 years. Lots of recent games even still fall short of GTA V's level and it's last gen.

the people that say no and the people that say it only came out so you can't call it the best are unwise.

it IS the best game.

No thats going to far. There are so many amazing games over the years so creating the best of all time is almost impossible. I would rate perhaps 9 or 10 games over the years a 10/10. RDR 2 for me is 9.5/10 just like RDR was when it came. GTA V was 9/10 and I think this is Rockstar for me they always make games that are fantastic and I'm so happy this game is just as good as I hoped it would be.

I promised to myself that I'd haven't pre-ordered RDR2 because of what has become GTA Online, but Rockstar "killed" me with the 3rd trailer... I've only played 7-8 hours, but I think they're enogh for saying that this game is a masterpiece! Probably my expectations for this game weren't as high as other titles, but Rockstar showed us that they're still able to make great games, even without Leslie Benzies. I'm "scared", I really think that RDR2 could overtake GTA IV and take the 1st place in my top games list, but I guess I'll have to wait until the end of the game.

And please Rockstar, don't do the same things you've done with GTA V, don't destroy also this beautiful game! I need to play RDR2 Online for achieving the platinum on PS4 (and on PC in the future, we all know that it will be released soon) ;)

This has literally been the game I've been wishing would be made for years. A game that takes place in a large world with varying environments with tough but fair survival mechanics, customization, interesting collectibles, in-depth hunting etc. so I'm going to have to say, at this current point in time, yes.

Tons of second hand copies up for grabs on places like Ebay, Amazon etc. Even on day of release just like i said there would be. Quite a few of them have put in the listing "Selling due to not liking the game" or saying it wasn't the game for them. So it has quite a few people who don't like it.  Good on them for buying physical copies so they can grab their money back by selling them on.

For me, yes, best game I've ever played. But you can never have a definitive best game ever because people like different things. My best game ever could be no fun to someone else.

No.

But it comes REALLY close. I put it right next to other masterpieces such as The Witcher 3 (cliché, I know).
