Melee Combat

So one of the big complaints about GTA V was the clunky melee combat

Has it been improved in RDR 2. Are there cool kill animations like the counters in GTA IV?

Any melee weapons except the fists and the stone hatchet?

Lock n' Stock

It's nothing hugely remarkable, but it's an improvement over the original RDR. Haven't played enough to answer the other questions, though it does have close-up kill animations that are pretty good.

I just hope it's better than GTA V's. I didn't really mind the movements and simple mechanics, what annoyed me was that smacking someone with a gun was more effective and faster than using an actual melee weapon like a knife, crowbar or knuckle. It was mostly noticeable when fighting other players online that could just spam slap you to death whenever you tried to get up close.

It's 100x better than any previous R* game. It's simple and cinematic looking. Don't expect some super awesome fighting sim, but it's fairly satisfying.

RDR1 doesn't even come close.

There is definite improvement with it's usage, but it's versatility is still lacking.  I feel like we've had better melee combat options in GTA IV and RDR, which I liked better because even though it was clunky at times - it had a usable versatility with stealth and takedowns (though I haven't done any stealth yet in RDR2...jury still out on it).

Is it scripted animation or actual deaths?

I don't think I understand what you mean then.

Yes you can kill people by beating them up.

You can grab people from behind, you can execute them with knifes, stab them, slit their throats from behind or when they are on the ground. You can strangle the life out of people. I think its much, much better than any previous rockstar game. The punches and weapons feel weighty and have a satisfying sound. It's fun to use melee, but no its not a fighting sim.

Lol no not really, I'm sorry. Idk, when you punch someone they look like they just got punched.

I would say it is nothing like V or any Rockstar game though. It feels and looks way better.

If you beat someone up and they fall to the ground, are they dead or they will get up after some time like RDR1?

No need to add here. This for me.

Genuinely had Al and Bullock in mind during an early stage.[\Spoiler]

(Hope the spoiler worked in case I mentioned too much - Not good without the laptop). *Good enough.

Only had 2 scraps, but if it's like hunting/animals, be sure to put them down

Mash that face up!

Is there a knockout stage or it's certain death after you have knocked someone out?

I haven't seen them get up, because normally I runaway because I get wanted after. But you really f*ck up they faces when you box them up on the ground.

Must be honest, I just need more time and experience so sorry I can't help more.

I just feel it's more involved and immersive but I have little experience to draw comparisons.

I believe a game like The Warriors would be better at brawling as it was a key element, but this game is huge and need to see if that's including the small subtle bits. Apologies.

Getting back to you, I actually manage to choke someone to death in a fight so you can kill them with your hands.

All I can see in youtube videos is that every person you fight dies after a fist fight smh GTA 5 look alike.

Algonquin Assassin

GTA IV iis still the master of melee combat IMO, but it's still a big improvement over Red Dead Redemption and GTA V. Atleast Arthur actually looks like he's punching someone instead of flailing his arms like a crazy drunk.

The melee reminds me a lot of the Uncharted series.

I really like the melee, it feels right.

And there are some cool executions both with guns and the knife.

Having a bit of trouble dodging the punches tho, but it's still early.

Yes, your strikes feet heavy, the combat has weight and the sounds are great.

You have B/Circle for strikes, Y/Triangle grapples from which you can choke, beat or let go and X/Square blocks, if you hold it you will block but if you press it at the right time you can stun them and counter.

If you mean like those animations where you punch someone and instantly knock them out or when you go for the punch and the pedestrian counters, I haven't had that happen so far.

I couldn't seem to do it, but everything was a bit rushed at the time so not 100% sure.  But during the bar fight, is it possible to pick up chairs and smash them against people, grab and throw people across tables or through windows etc?  I know it happens to your own character, but this was just a cinematic bit.
