    • Yes, Mainland is pretty bad when you compare it to the other parts of the map.

    • Kinda, Mainland is, infact, worst than the other islands, but it is not so bad.

INTRO

Mainland is the Westernmost Island in Vice City, it is also the Last Island that the player will unlock in the Story. The problem is; the island is extremely bad, and it was probably rushed.

WHY?
The island have weird and (probably) unfinished places, in Downtown, for example, there are some building that have ramps, on their ceilings, just for a single, optional, mission.

Plus, the island is a bummer when you remember that Vice Beach (The easternmost island) exists

VICE BEACH

Vice Beach is the first island in the game, it is the one you first spawn, and it's where you start the storyline.
Ok, but why are we talking about Vice Beach when the topic is about Mainland?
Well, it is because Vice Beach is way more detailed and better than the Mainland, Vice Beach has many memorable places in the game and even after you unlocking Mainland, the missions on the storyline still go back to Vice Beach, just because it's is, in fact, a better place than the rushed Mainland.

PHOTOS

Here are some photos of the "weird and unfinished places" that i mentioned before, i may add some new pictures, and if someone want's to help me with the pictures, i may put then on this list:

http://uheCLQ6.jpg

Local: Little Havana

Problem: In the outside of the building, that icon can be seen, and there is also a window on the exterior, but on the interior, there is no such thing as a window.

http://5PeqgUe.png
Local: Little Haiti
Problem: This stair have a proper handrail, but the ceiling, don't have a fence, Rockstar possibly made the handrail, and forgot about a proper fence in the roof.

http://OPacuQJ.png

Local: Little Haiti
Problem: JUST LOOK AT THIS! All of the doors have the same number (wich is 270). Plus, those doors are too tall, they reach the roof!

http://cHhbEFS.jpg

Local: Little Haiti
Problem: This parking garage is just a 2D Texture, that thing don't fit in the building in any way.

http://HhQC4Ee.png

Local: Little Haiti
Problem: 4 "grillsteak" shops in one place?!?!?!? THIS IS AMAZING!

http://cS0WCxo.jpg

Local: Little Haiti
Problem: A Texture that don't even looks nice alone, repeated 3 times in a single wall. Great.

Local: Little Haiti (btw, you can see the last building in this photo too)

Problem: Rockstar din't fixed those Arcades

http://ODRJw3t.png

Local: Little Haiti

Problem: A empty place without a single prop to decorate, with some textures that don't blend well in the back.

http://qWvmgJK.png

Local: Little Haiti
Problem: This place could had been a Parking lot, a building in construction, but no, it is just a empty place with a concrete ground.

http://ZMGtsVT.png

Local: Little Haiti
Problem: Abandoned place without any use in the middle of a block.

http://O0u9jq7.jpg

Local: Little Haiti AGAIN

Problem: Bad texture blend as in many other cases on this list.

http://kqCHLCh.jpg

Local: Downtown finally, this is not in little haiti

Problem: Those buildings, where just made for a single optional mission.

http://nULtq8t.jpg

Local: Downtown

Problem: Lost Potential there, This huge wasteland in the southern part of Downtown that don't have any use. it could had some roads, buildings, instead of this useless land.

http://kZVJj5Q.jpg

Local: Downtown
Problem: That huge building don't have a road connection, neither this beach.

http://cqM3592.jpg

Local: Downtown

Problem: Misplaced sign.

SIDE NOTE

Some of those places where fixed in VCS, for example, the 2D Parking garage was replace with just a set of windows, that look way better.

Rockstar created GTA Vice City very fastly so these kind of weird things aren't surprising.

The western island isn't as good as the eastern one for sure but it's not that bad, it offers a good diversity of sets with some nice places.

Every GTA game has a part of the map where it just feels "odd" and I guess mainland is Vice City's, but I don't mind it. It offers decent variation and has the airport, Fort Baxter, Little Haiti, Little Havana etc which gives it a more commercial type of feel compared to Ocean Beach and the like.

Seriously, those aren't bugs... Just texture and backface culling issues. If you don't like it, edit the textures by yourself and use a third party plugin to disable the wrong faces due to lack of backface culling on the models. That's all.

I know, most of them aren't bugs, i created this topic just to show some problems, and my opinion on this rushed island.

I dont care, just love the Haitian-Cuban actions and the cool races there. Buildings are just their to look good in every game. Also GTA VC was released in 2002 just one year after GTA 3 in 2001, in fact it was improved version of GTA 3 with better sound effects and graphics and story (GTA 3 was more like a prototype in 3D, GTA VC the actual game) and out of the two imo GTA VC is better having played both ,  you can't compare texture to GTA 4 released in 2008, 4 years after SA  (2004) (LCS and VCS were side games released for psp to keep us busy while 4 was in development which begun right after SA was released, and of the two I only played LCS, not VCS) and also GTA 4 was in HD and concentrated more on graphics and looking good (which is why to me story line and feature wise SA is whole lot bigger even if we consider the EFLC expansions with 4). In 2002 games were more about making fun missions and cartoonish graphics (which was fun to us for different reason, if we want too realisic, why need a game, real world is good enough), while I agree GTA 4 and GTA SA are the two best games in GTA series, GTA 5 was all about graphics with features map size and story smaller than SA and 4 (only 1 of 3 main islands in SA was used). So those who prefer graphics and design, better for them to stick to GTA 5 which is all it is about, but for the ones who love game for story line contents, the fun of it and overall features taht makes GTA games soem of the best games ever known,  the top 3 games are SA, 4 and Vice City respectively are the three best games of the whole GTA series.

Lock n' Stock

Man, I always thought those parking garage textures looked like absolute SH*T.

Is it me however or does the PC version's lighting look too bland (which makes that texture work look even worse imo)? Guess I've been spoiled by the colorful PS2 version too much.

This is a common thing I encountered in the classic GTA games, but since GTA San Andreas all has changed, GTA San Andreas is the pioneer of the video game revolution, that's why Gta San Andreas deserves the title of the best GTA of all time

Sometimes I feel like the mainland is too diverse; the east island where you start the game is all fairly similar/affluent and it flows together well, nothing really feels out of place and I'd say they done a pretty good job with that. Cut to the mainland and you go from bustling downtown metropolis to Haitian/Cuban slums to the docks/airport area in what, thirty seconds on a bike? It's an odd change and definitely gives the impression the second island was slapped up rather quickly, like they basically just stuck the main road up and built around it. It's not that the areas themselves are bad as they're for the most part decently designed and definitely give the feeling Rockstar intended them to have, but the abrupt transitions make it less immersive. I'd agree with OP on some of the points he raised as the mainland has an abundance of dead areas ie the space behind Cam's/Sunshine autos, that entire empty strip from the Stadium down to the Junkyard and the random backlots or fields placed pretty much everywhere. Repeated textures are a given based on the facts it was 2002 and they slapped the game up in a year, but the mainland has a sh*t ton more of that than the east island.
