SPOILER:Why we will continue to play as Morgan through the duration of the story

Recommended Posts

OfficialTwiggz

Hello all,

this contains speculated spoilers as to why we will continue to play as Arthur Morgan once the RDR2 story is completed.

Outfits pertained to Arthur, will only be accessible by Arthur.

The extreme customization we have as Arthur.

Dialogue with NPC’s due to extensive dialogue options we have as Arthur.

Rockstars previous mistakes killing off likeable main protagonists.

Im sure Rockstar has learned from their previous games (mistakes) that they shouldn’t kill off such a likeable character to begin with. The first Redemption game left us sad and upset, due to Marstons death. Imagine we figure out everyone’s back story, lose some friends in the process, lose Arthur Morgan as a whole, and play as John, but not as a criminal because, he left the gang due to the craziness Dutch and fellow comrades were falling through, and instead play him as a family man. What kinda end game is that?

“Endless summer” and “Cowboy Builder”, also indicates that we will play as Morgan through the rest of the end game content, tending our own camp/ranch with the possibility to hunt, sell, buy, etc.

TLDR; Theres internal conflict within the gang, the gang splits, one team goes one way, Dutch, Javier and etc head another way. Dutch escapes to Central America, hence why we don’t go after him as Arthur.

Lets discuss.

Well we know that weight is a thing so that means there has to be different sizes of clothing . .

I agree.

Arthur survives, takes whatever gang survivors are left, and starts his own gang, free to operate anywhere you like for as long as you like.

I always assumed we'd continue as Arthur because it'd be more of the same if they just repeated RDR and I don't see them throwing the whole camp thing away if the entire game seems to revolve around it.

Honestly I just think we stay as Arthur for the story/epilogue because of specific camp upgrades revealed in the polygon article. I find it very hard to believe Rockstar would get rid of that feature for a unneeded twist of havig us kill Arthur as John and then having us play as John after the game is over. There are plenty of reasons to explain why arthur survives the events of rdr 2 and isnt talked about in rdr 1.

All the previews have eventually said the entire "camp" management etc are optional. Maybe the entire Dutch's gang will end up slaughtered one by one in a bunch of tragic events over the course of those few chapters, and at the end the last few remaining(Dutch, John, Bill, Javier, Arthur, etc) will end up fleeing their own way.

If they don't want to kill the camp mechanic, it's only logical Arthur somehow survives this whole thing. And if so, maybe his gang will be permanently stationed at that remote mexican island, and in endless summer he can travel back and forth between it and the main map to interact and keep the camp growing or something.

If it's not Arthur, there's no way the camp can remain. Or even if it's Arthur, but the remote mexican island doesn't come into play, what exactly will he do with a brand new camp and people when all his friends he grew up with are slaughtered or on the run?

Yeah, I'm really hoping Arthur doesn't die.

With Phelps, Marston, Johnny K, and the optional Michael/Trevor we've had enough protags die. Let Arthur get the happy ending John didn't

Imo the ending was perfect, tragic and yet beautiful; John finally achieved redemption, but he was killed for his transgressions nonetheless. At least he died a good man. Also I never got the hatred of Jack, who I felt was quite a well developed character; a sort of sad reflection of his father. I'd be quite happy to take the reigns as John at the end of RDR2, and starting with a new character, although perhaps frustrating, would provide the opportunity to sort of start again, as long as there was enough for him to do in the world. I'd also like to see it go full circle, for me it would be awesome if John killed Arthur at the end of RDR2.

I don't think they consider that a mistake lol. Easily one of the best endings to any video game ever imo. So many emotions. Then to go kill your father's murderer, with that epic turn around and walk towards screen, freeze frame in red. I get chills just thinking about it.

Really, I can't think of a better ending. And Rockstar couldn't either, which is why they tried to recreate that emotion with many of their games after that.

Anyways, I think Arthur is a dead man.

If we end up playing as John I will promptly eject the disc and throw out the window like a frisbee

Well there is another possibility. Arthur could have a son, since it's confirmed now that he has a love interest.

I don`t think they will kill of Arthur as it would be to similar to RDR`s ending. I think he will leave to somewhere else, and we will have a epilouge with Marston and ending the story with Marston going on the boat with Edgar Ross.

Maybe the ending is actually Arthur speaking to Jack Marston about the old time, I doubt A.Morgan is killed, unless Herbert Moon kill him of course, because H.Moon is on another level.

So the people that leaked saying that Dutch kills Arthur isn’t real ?. I hope not, I’ll be fuming if Arthur dies.

Best outcome would be the character switch mechanic unlocking at the end of game and allowing you to play as either Art, John, or Abigail.

It's annoying because it's the 4th(?) time in a row this happened in a Rockstar game. Like goddamn son I don't wanna play as John again that sh*t blows I had enough of him in Red Dead Redemption 1????

It just makes me think of those cringy GTA 4 wishlists from back before IV was announced where it was like I WANNA PLAY AS CJ AGAIN HE WAS A GUUUD CHARACTER. This is what happens when you get to play as past protagonist - lazy writing. Thanks, fans 😠

Does anyone know the exact mission and in what chapter arthur starts to become sick? I hated the way he looked when he's sick. I was in tears after what happened to him. Don't get me wrong, I love that we can play as John but with John in the end, I can't really be a outlaw robbing trains, stores, stagecoaches etc. Just doesn't feel right with the family stuff and horrible farming mini games we had to endure. Arthur over John any day imo.

To be honest I prefered Arthur to John (and I was the biggest Marston fan up to that point).

I like how, when I'm playing with him, I'm never sure if I should do the right or wrong thing.

With John, it's already pre-established in my mind that he's a good guy so it's kind of boring to play as him now. No duality.

Exactly. Like I wanted to rob a train with John at the end, just doesn't feel right. After playing with Arthur, John's just kind of boring. Now if we could play as prime John in the VDL gang, then it would be really interesting. Arthur just has that badass outlaw vibe that John lacks(Again post-gang)

Yep,

Time to replay the game. Since I have no spare save (so stupid of me)

Is there an Arthur vs John thread. Would be interesting to see what the results where. Yeah I need to replay the game also. When I finished the game, I just realised how much I miss having the camp. After a long day(s) of robbing trains, shops, stagecoaches and people, returning to your family and having chats. Also, could you please tell me the mission arthur gets tuberculosis?

It's just the setting that makes this difficult to swallow.

In RDR, you play as John while he's out on a perilous adventure across the frontier states and Mexico, so it makes sense that he's going to do "bad deeds" from time to time, or at least, be out in the wilderness exploring what the world has to offer. At the end when you're playing as Jack, you're literally in control of a man who has nothing to live for anymore and who has lived a life among outlaws since his toddler days. Of course he's going to do some horrible scummy sh*t.

In RDR2, you play as Arthur Morgan, a senior enforcer for one of the most notorious gangs around. The price on your head keeps getting bigger and the noose around your neck tighter. Most solid experience out of all of them. At the end, you play as John, who's now a newly married man with a newly constructed ranch who, a few months ago, was still using fake names and barely managing to survive.

Why in the f*ck would I then run around New Austin, West Elisabeth, New Hanover, etc and just be a pure f*cking outlaw. It just doesn't make sense. The game should just end after the credits because there is no story to tell from that point. It's just John living a normal life waiting for Edgar Ross to show up to his porch in 1911.

Even from a free roam perspective, it makes more sense when you're Arthur. He's got no one that really cares for him or that he cares for. If he wants to head out into the mountains for 3 weeks, hunting bears and exploring caves, he can do it. He's a free man. John on the other hand, has a family to take care of, he's their provider after all. Doesn't make much sense for him to go do errands in Louisiana while his family is starving back in Colorado.

Anyway, I know this looks like a rant but it's not. I really enjoyed the story nonetheless and it probably couldn't end another way, just like the first one.

I know right. It just sucks a lot. That's my biggest problem with John, when you're in control of him, you never feel like a true outlaw compared to Arthur(Senior member of the most notorious gang) or even jack as you mentioned. I'm just going to stop doing missions pre-tuberculosis and just free-roam and do my own thing with Arthur

I got spoiled by YouTube thumbnails, and holy f*cking sh*t, are you guys serious that I'm not going to keep and play as Arthur ? I'm not sure if I want to finish the story now or I'm probably going to restart the game once I finished the story ASAP, damn I'm disappointed.
