Will there be quicksand?

Recommended Posts

SmokesWithCigs

Of all the games I've played over the years, there are few I can recall having quicksand in the environment besides Mario ,Zelda or a classic 2d side scroller .In a world as vast and varied as rdr2will be I think it would be a perfect element to have to add danger to the mix. Any thoughts?

You never played pitfall? You're really not missing out.

There is apparently quicksand down in that part of the country, so that would be neat. I won't speculate that there will or won't be, however it is Rockstar we are talking about. It would not surprise me if they include places like that, detail oriented as they are.

I think that it might be too small of a feature to add into the game tbh. I don't think it would fit in too well with the game itself.

Quicksand wouldn't fit in a massive openworld game with alot of different landscapes? I don't understand? I think it would fit in perfect.

Quicksand isn't really a thing as you see it in the movies, so I don't really need that hassle in the game.

Well I just think that it doesn't fit because the only purpose it really has is to slow you down and maybe kill you. I don't think there's much to gain from it aside from being an area where you can't go over. Animals are useful as you can hunt them and skin them. Like if it's in a desert region for example, it would just be an annoyance (e.g. that one area i can't traverse over else i'll die)

The only games i see quicksand doing well in is maybe puzzle games or platformer ones perhaps. I don't really see any other real use for it.

Tbf, i don't know exactly how quicksand works but if you start falling in as soon as you walk over it, then i just see it as an annoyance which shouldn't be in the game.

There's a thing about how the more you struggle, the faster it's going to get you.

It could be kinda fun having players who panic die, and give those who don't a way to survive.

I actually think yes. I thought this immediately when someone in the discussion posted the clip from neverending story.
I totally feel R* are going to hit us in the feels with some horse related quicksand/bog action
Near Bayou area for sure.

Think about online ,it would be a good way to tdPopposing players or troll somebody. YOU could lead them to that area and the rest writes itself.

Allright I get you. I think it could add to gameplay. Imagining being hunted and you running off to the quicksand area where they get stuck or die and lose them.

And also what the guys above me said.

another question should the quicksand by realistic where you sink slowly and only fighting it hasten the sinking or do you prefer fake Hollywood quicksand like the post above mine? in some games that have quick sand you sink pretty fast

Quicksand may be found on riverbanks, near lakes, in marshes, or near coastal areas.[citation needed]

Quicksand is a shear thinning non-Newtonian fluid: when undisturbed, it often appears to be solid ("gel" form), but a minor (less than 1%) change in the stress on the quicksand will cause a sudden decrease in its viscosity ("sol" form). After an initial disturbance—such as a person attempting to walk on it—the water and sand in the quicksand separate and dense regions of sand sediment form; it is because of the formation of these high volume fraction regions that the viscosity of the quicksand seems to decrease suddenly. Someone stepping on it will start to sink. To move within the quicksand, a person or object must apply sufficient pressure on the compacted sand to re-introduce enough water to liquefy it. The forces required to do this are quite large: to remove a foot from quicksand at a speed of 0.01 m/s would require the same amount of force as "that needed to lift a medium-sized car."[1]

A animal is unlikely to sink entirely into quicksand and drown at all due to the higher density of the fluid (assuming the quicksand is on dry ground and not under water, but even if underwater, sinking is still improbable). Quicksand has a density of about 2 grams per milliliter, whereas the density of the human body is only about 1 gram per milliliter. At that level of density, sinking in quicksand is impossible. Descending about up to the waist is possible, but not any further. Even objects with a higher density than quicksand will float on it—until they move. Aluminum, for example, has a density of about 2.7 grams per milliliter, but a piece of aluminum will float on top of quicksand until motion causes the sand to liquefy.[2]

Continued or panicked movement, however, may cause a person to sink further in the quicksand. Since it increasingly impairs movement, it can lead to a situation where other factors such as weather exposure, dehydration, hypothermia, tides or carnivores may harm a trapped person.[3]

Quicksand may be escaped by slow movement of the legs in order to increase viscosity of the fluid, and rotation of the body so as to float in the supine position (lying horizontally with the face and torso facing up).[2]

I just don't see how it would work. Once you're in, how do you get back out in the context of a video game?

In online you won't be alone so so maybe a friend or crewmember could extend a branch or something. I think I remember seeing on tv that in order to rescue someone you have to stick a branch  and or pole under their feet or maybe you can tie a rope and use a horse to pull them out. In story mode I could see a tutorial mission where one member of the gang is stuck in quicksand and you and the gang have to work together to get them out.
