You choose which gang members die.

An interesting idea, this is not a prediction, just food for thought.  The general consensus, which I agree with, is that most of your gang will be captured or killed.  The idea I had was, it would be great to have to choose which ones go and which ones stay.  Narrative driven of course.  For instance, you're running from the law, it's a throw someone over the edge type of situation and you have to choose which one stays behind.  Or if there's a fight within the gang, Charles and Micah have a Mexican standoff, you have to choose which one to back.  You hate Micah, so you side with Charles but PLOT TWIST, you helping Charles inadvertently gets him killed and you just made an enemy of Micah.  The best ones would be choosing between two characters you actually love.  Karen and Tilly are both hanging from a ledge(proverbially or literally) and you have to choose which one to let die.

Anyway, just a cool feature that could theoretically be in the game, I haven't seen anybody mention anything like it.

Thoughts?

The issue with this is that it would hurt story telling.

Writing a strong story around multiple outcomes is difficult. Having the freedom to kill one major gang member over the other should mean that the story of the game should change drastically, that's a lot of work to right multiple different plots.
That's why games that give you multiple choices feel like your choices don't really matter.

Valid point.  That would mean some of the gang members would have to be somewhat throwaway.

It's an interesting idea but generally leads to the story being not as good as the developers need to plan around that whole idea as IG_ said.

It could potentially work if there's a few main characters that could die this way or you choose who dies but still it's hard to pull off. (Look at GTA IV, you could choose to kill certain people and it didn't really matter in the end. The biggest difference it made was maybe having that character show up in a stranger mission/side mission.)

This could work if they did it at the end of the game. Like they did with Roman in GTA IV.

I'd let Dutch die and create a time paradox.

Starts to make it feel like a Quantic Dream game!

Those have branched narratives dependent on your choices - but the result is that in a single play-through, you only see a small fraction of the overall story footage they've created.

Which is fine for those games, as there's very little other than the story to keep you entertained. And if you really love it, you can play again taking other options - because it's only ten hours or so for a playthrough.

For RDR2, where there's going to be so much to do that a single playthrough is likely to be 100 hours+, it would seem a shame not to see the vast majority of the story!

Which is why Rockstar have only really toyed with choices at the very end of their games, or when there aren't significant longterm consequences.

The only reason that I even considered it as a possibility is because they have been slowly creeping further down the JRPG route as each game comes out.  I have a feeling this won't be apart of the game, but if they did do it, I have enough faith in them to pull it off with out it being heavy handed or ruining the story. I feel as if it would be not so much a branching path, but as an alternate route to the ultimate destination.
