This pool cue is slightly comparable to a shinai (a weapon used for practice and competition in kendo representing a Japanese sword).

 

 

 

 

 

The shinai was developed in an effort to reduce the number of practitioners being seriously injured during practice.

 

The word "shinai" is derived from the verb shinau, meaning "to bend, to flex", and was originally short for shinai-take (flexible bamboo).

 

Unlike a pool cue, the four tied slats of the shinai are specifically designed to reduce the force of the impact of a blow.

 

They are also used in other martial arts, but may be styled differently from kendo shinai, and represented with different characters.

 

Far from dangerous, a shinai is used as a practice sword in order to simulate the weight of a katana or a bokken without injuring the user or the target.

 

The earliest use of a bamboo weapon, to train with, instead of a sword is credited to Kamiizumi Nobutsuna (born c. 1508, died after 1572?). He was a samurai in Japan's Sengoku period famous for creating the "Shinkage-ryu" school of combat (meaning "new shadow school", a traditional school (koryū) of Japanese martial arts.

 

Shinai shouldn't be confused with bokken. Bokken are usually the size and shape of a katana, but are sometimes shaped like other swords.

 

Its simple wooden construction demands less care and maintenance than a katana.

 

The bokken is used as an inexpensive and relatively safe substitute for a real sword in several martial arts such as aikido, kendo, iaido, kenjutsu and jodo.

 

This is also the motivation behind the development of bogu, the armour that protects the practitioner.

 

Bokken eventually became lethal weapons themselves in the hands of trained experts.

 

Miyamoto Musashi (c. 1584 - June 13, 1645), was a kenjutsu master renowned for fighting fully armed foes with only one or two bokken.

 

Injuries occurring from bokken are very similar to those caused by clubs and similar battering weapons and include compound fractures, ruptured organs, and other such blunt force injuries.
