New interview (I think so) with Phil Hooker, director of technology at Rockstar North, about wildlife: https://www.gamesradar.com/red-dead-redemption-2-horse-permadeath/

Quote

Some animals move as herds between locations at various times, and some of the herds have a finite number of animals so that as you kill them over time, you can remove that particular herd or simply reduce the numbers when you come back next time.

Oh man! I used to randomly shoot so many animals in RDR.  I'm going to have to be careful this time around before I make every species go extinct!

I don't know if you are on about the 25th embargo for Amazon, but a lot of people are receiving emails about dispatch of the game.

Out of curiosity....and going a bit sideways on the topic here.....do we have any idea in what way Lazlow contributes to the writing process for a R* game like RDR2?

I always thought he was involved in writing minor dialogue, but the way Houser described things in the interview, it sounded like he's now an absolutely core part of the writing staff.

I have no reason to believe that he's not a terrifically talented writer - it's just slightly difficult to separate my image of him from the tragic dancing buffoon we see in GTAV, and hear in earlier GTA iterations!

I dunno what he contributes to things like the main story and key character arcs but even if that's not his area when you have as much dialogue as you do in RDR2 (hundreds of thousands of lines) then even someone writing side stuff is a critical part of the writing team.

I watched a interview that Lazlow did on a radio show that got linked here before, about the making of Red Dead Redemption. The way he talks about it makes it seem as though he's part of the production of the game for a very large majority of it, he had an extensive knowledge of most of the things that went into making the game. From what I remember he also writes a large amount of the pedestrian stuff.

What for?

It's only 8 days before Red Dead Redemption 2

I'm just saying RDR2 is not the only fantastic game out there, there are lots of great Sony exclusives out there that are purely focused on Single Player.

That's a damn good aspect of this game and one I was curious about too---I remember once in a while in RDR1, I'd have a wave of, say, beaver, or elk, and just shoot the bejeezus out of a bunch of them in one general place at a certain time of day (I have a place near the RR camp that I dubbed "the killing fields" for that reason).

So the reality of RDR2 also dictates how much of a kill you can take among certain animals. That's awesome. R* is amazing.

It's a good question. I can't remember a GTA (without voice acting) he's been excluded from.  He's always seemed a very close part of the R* core family.. R* royalty if you will. From what I have heard, he is authentically funny and probably sits as a creative fly on the wall for most things?  Who knows tho

I'm not a treehugger, but am an outdoorsman and a Teddy Roosevelt sort of guy when it comes to hunting, etc. I think true conservationism and an understanding of the finite nature of things, is a great trait to have in a video game.  It bothered me in RDR1 that there were only 19 buffalo and you could kill them all. Eh, I left one alive forever, haha

I got an instagram ad form the R* account in my language saying preloads would begin at midnight my time, so I think it's gonna be midnight in your timezone instead of 12AM ET fixed timezone.

Does this mean we can cause an animal to go extinct in game??? Or is it just a herd of animals?

'Some of the herds have a finite number of animals so that as you kill them over time, you can remove that particular herd or simply reduce the numbers when you come back next time.'

No doubt this has probably already been mentioned tons of times in here, but i don't wanna go searching. ;)

Don't think you can make "normal" animals go extinct, but probably kill an entire herd of buffalo for example. He did say every animal was hand placed, but doesn't every open world game rely on spawn systems? It would be cool if you could make animals go extinct I guess, but I wouldn't like it tbh, how fun is that if you never encounter that specific animal again? Could you theoretically kill every animal in the game then?

Yeah next week I feel will drag out a wee bit. It’s gonna be even worse knowing the full game is now there on my console...

This weekend is important things could start leaking. I remember V leaked the weekend before release but like many have said the Friday release changes things so we might not get any leaks.
