Actually there was no reason for them leaving him for dead. It was a robbery gone wrong. Are you  sure you played Red Dead 1?

In the first game uncle said something like “we thought you was dead!” So maybe they left him because they literally thought he was dead

The gang betrayed John 100%, not the other way around. For those who actually played RDR1 this clip i'm going to link will sound very familiar. How are people missing these things? LOL

They thought John was the weakest. We don't know for sure, maybe Javier was lying. He was just trying to bring John's guard down so that he could make his escape, Dutch, Bill, Javier always made comments about how John was the 'weakest' in their gang.

They wanted him dead, because Edgar forced John to kill his fellow gang members, maybe they forced him to kill Arthur, There's another possibility that John will fake Arthur's death, maybe that's why they wanted John dead, Because they thought he was a rat. Dutch was paranoid, and insane

Why? Dutch was like a father figure to John. What could John have done that pushed Dutch to want him dead?

I don't imagine this will be painted in such stark shades of black and white (e.g. Dutch just went  crazy and arbitrarily decided John was weak)

Hopefully the storyline allows for discussion of the morality of this betrayal and who really betrayed who

It's not because a colored person from that era has a caucasian name, that he's automaticaly deemed a slave.

I'm not sure. But i remember as a 14 year old how angry and sad i felt for John that these people did this to him. It was the first time i actually connected and cared for a protagonist/character in a video game.

This right here reinforces why I'm not worried about the story being a prequel. There is still plenty we don't know about.

 

People seem to forget that, in the first game, John was pretty tight-lipped about his past. He gave people the basics (ie. He was in a gang, Dutch/Javier/Bill were in it, they did bad things), but apart from that we don't know much at all. It also explains why Arthur and the others were never mentioned. Because all of that is in the past and he doesn't want to drudge it up. He wants people to see him for who he is (or at least is trying to be) NOW. He only mentions Dutch, Bill, and Javier because he has to deal with them NOW.

I'm pretty sure Arthur's somehow gonna get his redemption, before his death/disappearance. I'm also sure that we'll get to see the failed robbery in 1906 and the Blackwater massacre which took place in 1899, I believe, which had lots of casualties and some of Dutch's gang members have probably died there, The following quote foreshadows that and backs up this theory a bit
"by 1899 the wild west had nearly been tamed"

I don't think just because this is a prequel the story will be so predictable. Rockstar has had 8 years to work on this and they understand giving a new character his own story AS WELL as keeping in mind the events that were talked about and left a mystery are both equally important. Rob Nelson already confirmed this is ARTHURS story. He made that very clear he said "although John Marston is back this is Arthur's story from his point of view."

 

Anyways, we are in good hands. Although John was betrayed of course there's gonna be events leading to that that we don't know about yet. And there's no need to try to piece it all together right now. We will find out for ourselves in the coming weeks™

I don't see why Rockstar can't make a compelling new story from the perspective of Arthur Morgan, while also answering the mysteries from the first game about the gang and John's past. It doesn't have to be one or the other. Besides this is a video game, and story telling is never that straight forward in open world games, so I imagine a lot of the mysteries can be uncovered through exploring the world, talking to NPCs, side missions, etc. 

 

I personally think this game will take place over the course of a few years at least, because the screenshots already suggest that characters are aging.

While we wait patiently for our next news and the treasure hunt. Look at this blessing I was telling you about recently . I present to you, the best multiplayer I have ever experienced. Red Dead online was the sh*t like seriously. In this you'll hear and see a few things I mentioned. The announcer, the Mexican standoff, the players all in a LIVE lobby (not loading screen) this was so f*cking awesome and I'm super excited to see rockstar finally bring back my favorite online experience ever. I think RDR2 online will be a lot like this but much more in depth/more modes. The modes were great but man oh man the free roam... Posseing up with other players and fighting for land and other territory never got old... Any red dead online players in here? New or from 2010?

Was looking through some screen shots and noticed this blood spatter on Arthur's hand.

 

 

If you look closely you can see there is a slight amount of blood on the outside of his coat sleeve too. I think there may also be a little blood on the inside of his coat sleeve, can't be sure on that though, it's difficult to tell.
