Dying needs to matter in this game

Rockstar is making the world of Red Dead Redemption 2 out to be dangerous. From what I've seen you can get robbed or killed by human AI and killed by animals.

I'm not saying you should start over from scratch, but whatever money and guns you have should be lost. To keep money from being lost, keep it in the bank/safe house and keep guns on your horse and safe house.

I think those are fairly good ideas and will make you think before venturing off into the unknown and encountering other bandits or dangerous animals.

the previews seem to indicate that dying doesn't matter much at all, I hope that was just for the purposes of the demo they were playing

In any GTA you lose money every time you respawn in a hospital.

So I would expect something similar.

IGN was like "if you die and lose your hat, you'l have to go back to where you died to get your hat back!"

They really f*cking like to geek out about the losing your hat feature

Weird thing is if you don't go back to get this hat, it will reappear in your saddle anyway.

Unless you have not worn it for long enough. In this case it will not reappear in the saddle.

So far known penalties for dying are

-Potentially losing your hat
-Respawn super close by

I'll pass on these ideas.

Yes please. Getting robbed in a game is what I've always wanted

But apparently now your hat respawns and even has an map icon.

It seems the biggest focus they are putting is your horse dying which could potentially still be a significant penalty if your inventory is full so you can't retrieve what is on your horse.

I’m sure I read somewhere that when your horse dies you can carry the saddle/ gear.

It's unlikely that Rockstar will be anymore unforgiving then they have in previous games. I may be in the minority here but worrying about losing all/most my progress when adventuring doesn't sound fun to me.

Agreed. Rockstar are good at prioritising fun over realism.

Would be nice to have different difficulties so everyone can be happy. I rather not lose anything when I die.

And most likely the game just autosaves every couple minutes so you will just respawn where it last saved.

I don't like the idea of storing my money to not lose it, but then having to go to the bank/safe again, draw the money in order to buy something, that doesn't sound fun to me.

There should be a limit on the realism side, to not intervene in the fun side.

tbh i rather have them add a hardcore mode where that stuff happens when you die but also have a normal mode for the players that don't want to have their fun restricted by having to worry about to many things.

rockstar already  has done enough for the realism in this game,no need to further that even more by making you worry about death penalties aswell.

You lost a little bit of money. I think you should lose whatever you have on you. To avoid losing everything keep extra guns on horse and safe house and keep cash in bank

But I see the general consensus is everyone just wants a laid back game. Ah well.

I also didnt like it in previous R* games, that it allmost had no consequenses when dying. So I allways fought to the death with police or other gangs. Getting arrested was no option, cause it had no advantage compared to dying. I hope we'll lose a lot of money and only lose ammo for getting arrested for example

Not gonna happen most likely, people want a laid back game with no consequences of just doing silly things. I understand where they're coming from as Rockstar has never made serious games in the 1st place.

Rockstar makes the RDR 2 world to be dangerous, but it's not really dangerous

No, I'd say you're by far in the majority.  Realism should only go so far.  I know Red Dead games are less about acquisition of stuff than GTA (or most other games), but I still don't want to reset to zero just because I made a bad decision or perhaps just suck at shooting.  This is still a video game, it shouldn't be punitive to the point that you are too afraid to really take chances and play it for fun.

I think there's some other possibilities for consequences that could be implemented, but losing all your hard-earned weapons and all your money? Nah. Way too far.

I would certainly like *some* consequences just not ball-aching-need-to-replay-the-last-5-hours type of consequence.

For instance if I get held up or if some one says “keep walking pal” with a gun to my face. I’d like to think that my default isn’t always going to be to try and shoot but rather talk my way out of it and not die - because it does matter.

Nobody is saying be reset to zero.

It's easy to avoid by simply keeping money in safe house and weapons on horse/safe house. It takes 1-2 minutes to bank money and guns.

Even if you die and respawn around the corner with no consequences, I don't think it will make the small choices and mechanics they added any less immersive. It's more for roleplay purposes.

I'm going to take full advantage of the new AI mechanics even if I can open fire on everyone and die with litte consequence.

There may not be many consequences to dying, but the honour system is back and likely improved which will have it's own set of consequences.

And if you're a forgetful or new player who didn't do it and loses everything..?  Or what if there are rare, hard-to-obtain, or expensive custom weapons in the game that you want to use?  And you lose those from this proposed mechanic?

I don't mind GTA-style losing a set amount of money, and I wouldn't mind some other ideas possibly, but I still think your approach is potentially VERY punitive and frustrating.

In all GTA games, Rockstar has consistently warned players of losing money + guns. I'm talking waaay back to GTA London. On your first game, the message is usually the same, along the lines of paying for hospital bills. In Vice City the police took all your guns and you either rebought them or reloaded the game. This remains the same in GTA 5, if you die you lose all your guns and some money. I don't see the problem. Who doesn't know by now that you'll lost items if you die?

To make things easier they should make it to where you can retrieve your items. Idk some of you are opposed to challenge, it really isn't that big a deal as long as you're smart.

Your horse dies permanently if killed... I wonder if you lose all of the items you stored in the horse's storage sack?

It would be pretty punishing, but also... don't ride your damn horse into gunfire.

Death should hinder progress but a major annoyance IMO.

I see what you're saying, but back then guns were not customizable like in GTA V and RD2, it was no biggie to just go buy new weapons. Keep in mind weapons were the only thing you really could spend money on too. Losing stuff on death will just give the player a boring chore of getting all your things back and re-customizing again. I'm all for some challenges but retrieving items everytime you die could be quite frustrating and tedious.

What's the point of playing a game if it doesn't give you challenge? It's not rewarding. You seem more like a movie guy. Go watch a movie.

In a perfect world there should be a harder difficulty with different death mechanics, but since recent swarm of casuals on video games, devs don't give much sh*t.
