This is my argument.  I was born and raised in a city called St. Louis, where everybody from here AND everybody not from here who isn't a native French speaker call it the anglicised "Saint Lou-iss".  Literally nobody calls it the proper "San Louiee", so it's weird to me that even the most country ass motherf*cker in this game busts out his most proper French pronunciation.

You know I'm honestly surprised that NO ONE in this game seems to americanize the name when pronouncing it. Everyone pronounces it San Denny.

St. Louis is heavily Anglicized however and that has long been the case. Most of the people who settled there in the 19th Century were either Americans of British descent that had moved to the area from one of the states to the East, or immigrants from places like Ireland or Germany.

St Dennis is based on New Orleans rather than St Louis, which had much greater French influences than St Louis. Prior to the 20th Century most people of French descent in Louisiana still spoke a dialect of French as their primary language, not unlike modern French Canadians. Given the setting the people of St. Dennis pronouncing their city's name in a way that sounds more French than English makes sense.

Although New Orleans itself is not pronounced the French way, despite all the French influences! If it were, it would be New Or-lay-on (excuse the bad phonetics).

I'm with the surprised crowd that we don't hear at least a couple of Saint Den-iz's

Zutaten:

  • 2 rote Paprikaschoten (300g)
  • Salz, etwas Brühe
  • 100g Reis, roh
  • 200ml Brühe
  • 1 kleine Zwiebel
  • 2 El Rapsöl
  • 2 El Erbsen (Konserve, abgetropft)
  • Salz, Pfeffer
  • 2 El Semmelbrösel
  • 20g Butter

Zubereitung:

It isn't now because for much of the 20th Century schools forced in Louisiana forced francophones to speak English. That led to a sharp decline in the number of people in Louisiana who speak a dialect of French as their primary language. In the 19th Century there would have been many more French speakers, and they would have used a French pronunciation for Orleans.

Only about 7% of people in Louisiana speak French today and New Orleans is overwhelmingly populated by English speakers. A Century ago that wouldn't have been the case.

Rockstar got it right in a French pronunciation being used for their fictional take on New Orleans, and with many of the city's inhabitants either speaking French or having French-based accents.

Not sure what you guys are on about. "San Duh-knee" is as American as it gets. French pronunciation would be a LOT different.
