How many missions is everyone expecting?

Just trying to spark some more speculative conversation why we wait for the next tweet or link!

Obviously Rockstar has been moving away from its original model of obvious missions and then side activities which we all knew and loved from the PS2 days. GTA4 introduced Strangers, RDR introduced random events, and GTA5 ramped both up to the extent that there were as many of each as there were main story missions.

I expect RDR2 to take that even further to the stage where - as the previews and interviews have intimated - side missions, S&Fs and random events sort of meld into one. Most likely accessed through conversations with people we meet going about their daily business (or dangling off cliffs). But at the same time, I expect there will be the main story missions (accessed by walking into a marker) that are necessary to open up certain activities and/or move the game forwards (which will likely involve occasionally moving the camp, and hopefully moving time forwards as well).

My best guess is that we'll be looking at somewhere in the region of 50 main story missions - which will be highly cinematic, and all killer-no filler. As the original showed, this is sufficient to tell a complete, complex, gripping story. But also won't be too long that it puts off the ADD folks that just want to speed run the SP and get to Online. Then I'm expecting 100+ of the "what did I just do" side missions strewn across the map.

Fair? Too hopeful? Not hopeful enough?

Following R*'s Adult humour, I hope we get 69 main story missions.

I'd not want to talk in numbers when it comes to RDR2 ... from what they said it looks like a totally new approach ... actually it'll be hard to figure out what's a 'main' mission and what's a 'side' mission. They'll go hand-in-hand and will all be of the same level of quality. I'm loving it!

I predict that we will have 1889 main story missions... and 666 side missions.

I know I'm wrong but I just want to have fun with this.

I have a feeling we'll have 6 chapters in total.

Four for each state, the fifth will be for that island,

Sixth  is probably what causes to gang to split.

Hopefully something like GTA SA and IV, 80-100 story missions

R* shouldn't worry about that, if people really want to play Online, they can just ignore SP and go right to MP.

I Agree with Emmi. It is an experience with things that happen on the run. I don't want to see it as a number of missions :)

I think it'll be in the ballpark of their previous games. Not gonna estimate a number because I think it's pointless, but I expect the game to be full of content and take me a few weeks of regular play to conquer.

I would want around about 40-50 but as long as they go for Quality mainly. I don't want a bunch of boring missions for padding purposes.

I think they are gonna do away with "story" and "side" missions, and literally just call them all "missions".

So, I guess, 200+.

Yeah, I also think they don't separate it anymore ... everything in this game will be on the same level of quality ... be it a 'main' or 'side' story/activity. I mean they said it ... you won't be able to tell anymore whether you just played a main or side mission because side missions can be just as long, etc. as main ones. This game will be the start of something truly unique and changing the industry once more! Thanks R* for pushing the limits and being so amazing at what you do!

In a way though this is just splitting hairs. The game clearly has some kind of traditional narrative structure and that means some missions will advance the story while others won't. Whether they explicitly tell us which missions are which (or even tell us we're on a mission at all) is largely academic. Behind the scenes, it's hard to imagine the game construction being all that different. A mission you initiate with the gang will probably be a story mission; a mission you get from a random NPC in the middle of nowhere probably won't be.

Back to topic - I find the fixation on sheer numbers a bit pointless. A complex mission with multiple objectives that takes 20+ minutes is of far more worth to me than four basic fetch quests that take 5 minutes each. A lot of the older GTA games, good as they were, were occasionally guilty of aiming for quantity over quality. GTA V I felt mostly had superior missions (and still managed to pack in almost 80 of them). I'm looking for RDR2 to continue in that vein and improve further. If there only technically 50 "missions" but the game still takes 50 hours to beat and all the missions are diverse and interesting, that's the experience I want.

Given that Redemption has 57 missions required to finish the story, I'd be not be surprised if Redemption II offers somewhere around 100 missions. The game is simply too huge, and the known contents so far have been tripled and even quadrupled from Redemption.

Just going by all the info we have from the previews, it seems that we are not going to have a traditional narrative structure, but I guess only time will tell.

I still think there will be a much larger amount of missions overall than we have seen in a R* game before.

Agree wholeheartedly with Nutduster here - a game like GTA:SA is often held up as having over a hundred missions, and therefore more than the games of today - but in terms of mission content, that's all there was. A lot of them were filler, and a lot of them were tangential to the main story and, if made today, would not be viewed as Main Story Missions. Overall GTAV had way more dialog and 'narrative content' than GTA:SA did, a lot of it was just tucked away outside of the 69 official missions.

And I'm sure that trend will only increase with RDR2.....however I'm still expecting to have some traditional main missions, because:

a) That's what a number of the previewers seem to have played

b) We know from interviews that time is going to advance in the game world/things are going to get built - and that's much, much easier to achieve by using missions as a trigger to advance than just real time passing

c) Several of the scenes in the trailers did have traditional 'start-a-mission' letters appearing on the HUD

Algonquin Assassin

I wouldn't mind if it had roughly the same as Red Dead Redemption or a tad more.
