Outfitter VS Create a Character.

What does everyone want and/or expect we will get with Red Dead Online?

OUTFITTER

I liked the Outfitter simply because of the variety in character models. We had short and tall characters, we had skinny and fat characters, and all of them were very detailed with voices that fit their appearance. Unfortunately there weren’t enough character models in the game. 9 times out of 10 you would run into another player using the same character model as you were. Another plus about using pre-designed character models is for roleplay purposes. If I was playing as a Native American in Red Dead 1 and wanted to roam around online as a US Marshal for a while, I could simply switch my character via Outfitter to do that. With created characters we can’t effectively roleplay as Native Americans, US Marshals, Asians, Africans, etc with a single character model. It just wouldn’t look believable.

CREATE A CHARACTER

I like the Create a Character option we saw in GTA Online because our character can look the way we want them to look to a degree. Unfortunately we weren’t able to make them skinnier, fatter, shorter, or taller. If Red Dead Online does use the Create-a-Character design we saw in GTA Online, all characters would have the same body size so that the clothing fits everyone, and the animations look natural for all situations.

Both designs have their pros and cons, but I would prefer being able to create my own character.

I'm hoping for and expecting a new level character creator but I could see it having both.

One thing I did like about the outfitter was just watching them hanging around, smoking, chuggin booze, sharpening knives etc.

Maybe the Outfitter could return, but with every character model shown being a customized character? That way we could still swap out our characters for one that better fits the role we want to play (assuming we’ve created a character for that role).??

That would be the best of both worlds.

I think it's a given we'll see a return of the character creator from GTA: O simply due to monetisation purposes, though hopefully it has been improved to allow modifications to height, weight, etc.

This is where the news that Arthur can gain/lose weight in single-player has some interesting implications - because it effectively says that R* has managed to get RAGE to allow for San Andreas-style modification of character models and clothing assets. Ever since GTA IV, people assumed that losing that sort of thing was the inevitable cost of switching to more realistically-sculpted character assets (compared to games that sacrificed realistic detail for character malleability, like Saints Row) - but apparently they've overcome that hurdle, and R* characters can indeed have both, now.

It'll be interesting to see if player characters will be able to lose/gain weight as well, or if that's just a feature in single-player - depends whether they've done 'different fixed body types for Arthur, with bespoke clothing models for each' (which would mean a lot of work doing that for various Online character body types - if they treat 'slim, hefty, beefy, etc.' as separate character models, then they've got to make ...at least half a dozen versions of each clothing item), or a dynamic, 'stretchy' system, where even if the body types are hand-crafted, the clothing assets are malleable enough to fit all manner of builds (literally 'one size fits all').

As for the outfitter approach, though? Don't think it's coming, personally - they've already shown GTAO-style custom characters in the Ultimate Edition marketing, with RDO characters having comparable outfit customisation to Arthur in single-player (same as GTA V/GTAO). And it makes sense, too - bit like how it's easier to get more invested in your own custom stuff in GTAO, compared to rent-an-NPC characters and no property/vehicle ownership in GTA IV multiplayer. The only real downside is a lack of variety in character types - but again, R* might well have improved character models to the point where that's a non-issue (although that's not confirmed yet - likewise whether or not RDO will have the rather disappointing lack of variety in clothing options of GTAO...).

I'd like to be able to create/choose a character and be able to choose classic western characters from films like the man with no name, angel eyes, etc.

I honestly hope we have an all new character creation system for RDO. GTA Online's was okay to a degree, but it was still built around the basis of a Last Gen video game. Now they're exploring current gen for the very first time, like a true current gen game; they finally have the time and space to make something much better. And from their comments about customization in RDR2, it would almost be unfair to disable most of it for Online.

They can only benefit from a new character creation. More people will be likely to use it more so, since they could make something much more amazing. I hope they take an idea from say, WWE 2K18; on that game, you can edit the lighting to see how your character looks underneath different lighting. I've noticed that the character in GTA Online, looks vastly different in the creation suite than it does in lobby. So if they're willing to add just a simple light switch (pun intended) to the game, then that would be great. Among some other details too. I think, on a game this scale, this vast; that an in-depth character creation should be pretty huge.

Same goes for clothing too. I know they have stated they want RDOnline to be a personal experience. So what's more personal than doing some major customization for your online characters. They can only benefit from this.

TL;DR - Lots of custom options for character good. And I want them to keep a character creation.

I loved that. While waiting for Gang shootout or Grab the Bag to kick off.

One of the main things about the outfitter is that you choose a pre-made character like John Marston etc.. But i liked how you could taunt and press a button to say quotes and stuff. However, i think  create a character is the way forward as you can probably be more attached to your character that way and also as others have said, its good as a business decision (Selling clothes, hats, etc...).

Hopefully the system is revamped so not all the characters look like cousins of each other and they actually look somewhat unique.

(Also i hope they bring back titles and stuff like that so you can equip it next to your name)

Evilbagelninja

I really that they will go full out with the character creator because remember that red dead online is only coming out in November as a beta which means that the game might come out a few months after the main game is released.

So that means they will have enough time to make the best character creator in history which means that there will be enough detail in the character creator that there is in the rest of the game.

Full character creator, too much opportunity missed if they made it presets like the outfitter selection.

Just hope they don't put stupid sh*t in it like the ability to have red eyes, face paint and pink hair.

I hope the character creation has been expanded on a little bit further from gta online so there's a bigger variety of other people to meet. I think gtao has a lot of characters that looks pretty much identical in terms of the facial features.

But only time will tell

I don't have any doubts the character outfitter will be in no matter how deep the creator is

I highly doubt there will be the "outfitter" again. And I hope there isn't, it sucked.

I expect a pretty expansive character creator though. Way deeper than GTAO's.

Given how profitable GTAOnline has been, I think it’s safe to say that they are going to do everything they can to make people want to play RDRonline.  And character customisation is one of the biggest guest draws to any online game, so you can bet your ass it will have improved since 2013.

Personally,  I will be happy with a GTAOnline level of face customisation but with the simple addition of body shapes.  Maybe 10 each for make and female.

It's already been announced that we will have various different outfits in RDRO, and we will be able to mix and match clothing. I'm sure this means we will have full character customization like GTAO, but more advanced and with many more options. R* also referred to Online characters as "your character" which to me, makes it sound like they will be fully customizable because "your character" seems so personal. It would be stupid to stick us with an outfitter like in the first one. Everyone can't have the same face, even with different clothing. It wouldn't be "your character". RDR2O is said to be taking steps forward from GTAO and RDRM, in every aspect of the game. An outfitter would be a step back, rather than a step forward. Diversity is what makes online games so great. Don't be surprised if it's just GTAO customization, with more in-depth face/hair features, and probably even body shape options.

Jerking For Soup

character creator. Multiplayer from first game was terrible imo. I don't want to play as Landon Ricketts or some random dude. I want to play as my own unique character.
