Red Dead Online announcement - IGN Interview summary

Summary of IGN's interview with Imran Sarwar and Josh Needleman, of R* North and R* San Diego respectively

http://uk.ign.com/articles/2018/09/19/red-dead-online-devs-reveal-first-details

  • Red Dead Online will launch in November as a public beta
  • RDO will have multiplayer, cooperative and narrative components untilising the entire map from singleplayer
  • Easy to play alone or with a group
  • All the best elements of MP in RDR1 combined with best elements of GTAO
  • RDR2 and RDO are like separate products
  • Prefer to let players get to know the world in SP before introducing us to RDO and its mechanics
  • RDR2 is a massive SP story regardless
  • RDO will be a change of pace to GTAO - everything will be time/setting appropriate (i.e. no flying horses)
  • The biggest DLCs of GTAO like heists and gunrunning provided R* with a template for what will work and won't work for RDO
  • R* want DLCs for RDO to release quicker and be responsive to what people are enjoying
  • GTAO will still be getting updates for the foreseeable future
  • Plan is for RDO and GTAO updates to be staggered in release
  • Acknowledge that RDO and GTAO will/can have entirely it's own audience but want players to enjoy both alongside each other
  • Focus will be on role-playing and morality (i.e. don't be an asshole)

Yeah - and as an example of "combining narrative, gameplay, modes and other content into a cohesive thematic whole"...

...that'd be the update that had barely any narrative thread, and introduced flying jetbikes just by suddenly plonking them in the hands of Merryweather in one mission, and saying "this is a thing now". :turn:

All of this sounds beyond awesome.

Sometimes.. I'm an asshole but not 100% a dick. So morality may not be my characters strong suit.. ;)

For the love of all things please bring back the “Bag” objective game modes. Countless hours of fun playing “Grab The Bag”, “Hold Your Own”, etc...

For me, most important point is that everything will be time/setting appropriate.  That gives me a lot of hope for Online.

Reason I pretty much stopped playing GTAO is because how unrealistic it has become.

This is actually pretty exciting. Everyone has every reason to be sceptical but GTA Online as it is right now has given them quite a bit of backlash (i.e. the more reason they have to fix what's wrong with Online), and before you say "money", they can't get money from unhappy customers. It only worked with GTA O because it devolved (even more) with age.

I’m so happy Online is coming post launch because I just want to enjoy single player without feeling left behind in Online.

Ehh, this really killed a lot of hype they've built up over the past few weeks for me, just reminded that they're doing the exact same strat they've done for GTAV and well we all know how great that was for Single Player fans! I look forward to reading about people complaining about how Rockstar abandon Single Player and how they didn't expect that again.

YES! EXACTLY how I feel! They are spewing the EXACT same bullsh*t they said about GTA Online before launch. Only difference now is the name is Red Dead Online instead of GTA Online. I said that this has completely killed my hype for the single player due to GTA V and people think I'm crazy and Rockstar won't milk this to death. Haha yeah right. They have an online exclusive horse already. Who's to say what ELSE is online exclusive.

Lol I knew this would kinda be a bitch and moan thread number 2 since online is such a touchy subject for people... I honestly like to know how many of you like @TheOriginalGunslinger and I (pls bring back bag modes and land grab..) how many of you have actually played the first red dead multiplayer? Cause honestly, going off GTAO whatever you don't like about it does not mean red dead online will be the same. It's a new multiplayer experience that they themselves said is crafted from the DNA of the FIRST RDR online with the depth of gtao. People shouldn't be assuming how it is or isn't gonna be imo at least if you've never played the first game to really know what you're talking about. We and R* don't want it to be GTA online 2.0 clone. There will not be flying jetpacks, rockets, makeup none of that modern sh*t. This is the wild west a unique slower nature based experience that will not appeal to everybody especially those who think "oh horses no cell phones blah blah that's boring" but it's my personal favorite I've spent lots of years in it to back up this statement. Being based off the first one and just expanding upon what made it great? This multiplayer is gonna be the sh*t. And I know you're gonna think oh but micro transactions honestly idgaf. I never bought one in gtao, it was never forced on me unlike a loot box from ea. Some people just complain too much... Give it a chance guys.

Citation.

Needed.

And yes I've put a lot of time into RDR MP, it was a brilliant enjoyable experience and is one of the few online games where I prestiged multiple times because I was that hooked. To me it was near perfection, DLC was content to buy, but rank, unlocks, etc, were available for all.

It's the mixing with GTAO part that scares me, GTAO is abysmal tripe, pure drivel dogsh*t that just so happens to make billions and billions thanks to all the microtransactions it pushes, forcing players to Grind or else and promoting shark cards to the point where they abandoned Single Player because of how easy it was to drip feed content and have people throw money at them.

Why wouldn't they want that with Red Dead Online?

I wasn’t crazy about heists, because everybody wanted to be the leader so it was almost impossible to play them unless you had three friends willing to play when you were doing it.

However, for this reason I really loved updates like Bikers, Import/Export and After Hours. I want content that can be played single-player if nobody wants to join in while you’re online. Hopefully this is the direction they take Red Dead Online in.

One of the biggest differences between GTA and Red Dead universes is that you’re often speeding through or flying over a GTA world, whereas in Red Dead Redemption the change of pace elevates the intimacy of the overall experience. Like the single player game’s story of Arthur Morgan, we want people to settle into their online characters and feel like every activity makes sense for the character, the setting and the time. This should feel intimate and personal while still feeling fun and action-packed from moment to moment.”

This at least tells me they’re going into Red Dead Online with the intention of making it feel like Red Dead. Regardless of how it turns out years from now, this quote has left me hopeful.

Nice I'm really looking forward to it. I hope RDO won't launch too soon after RDR2.

I loved RDR multiplayer and I trust R* to make RDO good.

Love that choice personally, I wanted to play singleplayer first but some of my friends wanted to play online straightaway. This fixes that problem. Also, it seems that they will probably go the same route with the updates with GTA Online and as they have stated that the single player and multiplayer are like separate entities, that suggests to me that they might actually consider some single player DLC this time around (Referring to how GTA V didn't get single player DLC)

I actually hope it will launch November 30th, 5 weeks after the initial launch. Would be perfect for me, enough time to enjoy the Singleplayer. And it would give RDO some room, because Fallout 76 and BFV were already out.

Personally I think they'll launch RDO Nov 9 though.

If i see the same empty invite lobby session system as in GtaO i will just quit and never come back. Probably just sticking to offline will be good decision if they want to make it same as gtao

Yeah, it might not exactly be rocket horses, but after GTAO, would anyone be even remotely surprised if heavy horse armour or armoured carts with mounted Gatling guns get introduced?
