Things GTA IV gets criticised for you actually like

I see ChirvoVette's cool aid is slowly starting to wear off and you're seeing what makes GTA IV a great game. Good job.😉

Thanks, I do think IV is a great game. The only reason I've been hating it was because the reason I told you long ago.

Like many people said. The Driving physics is one thing that was criticized heavily. But I actually love the way driving feels in the game. You can feel the weight of the vehicle you are driving.

Driving in GTA 4 is much much better than GTA 5

The mature vibe and dark tone. GTA IV's story took itself seriously and it was better off for it, I felt much more invested in Niko's struggles and the characters had more depth and felt human compared to the 3D Era one's. It felt like a compelling & gritty crime movie that you could play.

I wish we could have continued with this but since so many whined about it, it seems Rockstar just shifted that to RDR while keeping GTA  just "fun" which isn't bad but I think GTA V clearly shows the wasted potential in that regard. If GTA IV's dark story was well received, V's story would be so much better. Instead while still fun it lacks depth and you can see Rockstar pandering to 3D Era fans and making everything "funny" and over the top

I used to be like you at one point.

I would not say I hated IV before, but I was very, very critical of it; while I did enjoy it on first playthrough, I felt it was missing so much stuff that I wanted to see and experience, and I focused so much on that. When I played it again, I realised there was stuff in the game that I really enjoyed and found interesting, and this was stuff that I had overlooked before. The addition of The Episodes enhanced my enjoyment of IV even further. I began to focus on what made IV enjoyable and there was enough of it to make me really like it and respect it. I cannot say the same for V, however.

Hanging out with your buds:

Yes, the phone calls may be annoying but once you get to them, and the hanging out begins, I really enjoyed it. The conversations they can have in the car is fantastic as we can find out more about these peculiar guys.

Side-missions:

Yes, they may have not been as intense as the ones in the 3D Universe but regardless, I still enjoyed the Wanted police missions and the drug fetching missions for Jacob.

Theme:

To be honest, I don't see why people make the game out to be proper depressing like (in many ways, this is a more negative comment rather than a positive one), I always thought it was light-hearted most of the time up until the ending where I actually felt sad over the deaths of certain people, but not unbelievably upset like.

Niko and The Storyline: I've heard plenty of criticism saying that Niko is bland, dull, boring etc as is the storyline and that it doesn't feel like a GTA game because of it. I personally think Niko is one of the more interesting protaganists in the GTA series and the whole IV storyline is gripping from start to finish. I think it's very detailed and one that I am constantly thinking about during gameplay and even afterwards.

Friends/Girlfriends: I really enjoy hanging out with Niko's friends and taking his girlfriends on dates. The calls themselves can sometimes be a bit annoying and tiresome, particularly when you just want to get on with the story. But I love that you learn so much more about these characters when heading too and from an activity. And the activities themselves (yes, even bowling) are quite fun.

Lack of activities:  that one I never understand, there's so many things to do in the game, specially if you're aiming for 100%. The only thing that sucks it's the taxi side-mission it's limited to 10 missions only.

Driving: if wasn't by the internet, I would never know people had problem with it. After the complaints, I realised that the driving feels different than the other games, but honestly it's the best driving of the series.

Exactly. The map doesn't really seem big enough to need aircraft (or jet packs), and thematically it doesn't seem necessary - there's enough detail in Liberty City. In fact, to enjoy that detail, you need to travel at fastest by car, ideally on foot, to fully appreciate it.

Roman actually turned me down once! He said that he couldn't expect to impress ladies if we just played darts all of the time. He politely suggested I call back another time with another suggestion, then he hung up. My immediate thought was, "Oh no he didn't!", but he totally did. So I called back the next day to get drunk - I still felt the drunk cam effects up to 2-3 minutes of it ending, woah!

I have never been turned down aside from when I have called at times when the character is asleep. So that's new to me. Who knew Roman was so choosey?

And that was news to me. Maybe that explains why I've struggled to meet Little Jacob, although if he's stoned a lot of the time then when is a good time to call him?

Aye, keep calling, say, Roman to play darts and after the 2nd or maybe 3rd time, he'll become a bit choosey. I avoid playing pool for now, because I find the mouse response terrible, so I barely strike the cue ball. Drinking, darts, bowling and eating are kinda fun, in that order. Actually, try doing something after drinking if you can get there in time - I wonder if you could go bowling drunk. Hmmm, something new to try me thinks.

Never cared either. Some might say it's because the map's too small. but to me the geography just doesn't suit them. Yes GTA III (kind of) and Vice City had planes with smaller maps, but they weren't also as densely packed. Besides helicopters do the trick just fine so I don't get the fuss about them.

As for the jetpack my care factor's even less. Besides the fact it would be silly in GTA IV's more grounded game world I've always found it to be really overrated because it's one of those San Andreas had so every GTA needs to have it apparently. It's slow, cumbersome and looks plain ridiculous in motion.

Agreed. I honestly don't see how planes are relevant especially when you have helicopters. If the game didn't have ANY kind of flyable transportation, it would have been a valid criticism.

Now with the jetpack part, honestly, I found the jetpack in SA extremely slow compared to other vehicles.

Yeah it’s been a complaint for years now, to the point where it was one of the biggest complaints next to “Friends call me every 5 minutes!” and “Niko whines too much!”

Well by this logic we better just include 1 car, 1 motorbike, 1 boat and one helicopter in the game since they all "get the job done".

It's all about variety and choice. Planes would add to variety.

I have to disagree when you consider a few things about the planes/helicopters

Due to the maps size and layout, the only place you'd get planes is the airport, unlike helicopters where you can find them on helipads and the helitours, making it extremely boring to have to go the airport every time just to get one plane.

Helicopters don't just get the job done, they do it well. It takes about 2 minutes to go from the airport to the prison in a maverick, which means it'd only take about 30sec-1min to go that same distance in a plane, and I'm not taking any kind of jets into consideration

Also unlike helicopters, planes would not fit into any mission in the game, so does this mean there would have to be a flight school just so the player learns how to fly planes?

Sure planes would add variety, but whats the point of having variety if it's useless, a perfect example are the trains, It adds variety but because there's a better alternate (taxis) nobody uses them

You're looking at everything objectively. If it's just about how "fast" you go from one place to another so what's the point of slow cars? Obviously the map size is small but is it smaller than VC? I'm actually sure one of the main reasons they removed the planes was because of the map size. actually another problem with the game itself "is" the map size. These two problems are actually tied to each other in the game. But take a look at VC...

Also you're talking as if planes were included in previous games because they were needed for missions. Nope. That's not how it works. It's the opposite. It was missions that existed because of planes. When planes exist, they open up possibilities for missions and other storyline material.

Planes were not included the make the game more 'grounded' 😉

Also funny how people say helicopters "do the job the best" when you realize how useful the jetpack can be for traveling in tighter places without blowing up. It's the ultimate transport for collecting collectibles. It can almost land anywhere and you can walk with it. Unlike a helicopter.

However the jetpack only has one spawn location in the game, whereas helicopters spawn all across the map. Not to mention it's very slow in comparison

Like I said it's all about giving the player the option to "choose" based on  what he/she to in the game. A jetpack would suit collecting collectibles. A helicopter would be perfect for landing efficiently and fast on rooftops and streets. A plane could be used for faster transportation in a bigger map or simply for basic stunts and fun within the current map. Same goes with a seaplane, motorcycle and different vehicles. It's the variety and depth that makes this series an incredible one. The player is given the option to choose what he thinks is the best and can ultimately switch between them to have fun. Parts of this "option to choose" was removed in IV.

the grounded nature of the game is really good imo. i don't want to see it as a permanent creative directive for the series but for what it was, i enjoyed GTA IV.

On a side note, of course @TheSantader25 joins just to fill up a thread based on things you enjoyed in GTA IV with his drivel once again. Like seriously dude can there ever be one thread about GTA IV where you don't start whining.

Why am I not surprised that I can't have a civil discussion here without someone jumping on me because I mentioned one of the flaws of the game they liked. It's a forum here and we are here so we can discuss things.

I wouldn't do it if I didn't see people wondering why people consider these as flaws. They could simply say "the lack of planes didn't bother me" but when they constantly say "I have no idea why others consider these a flaw" I better clarify why so maybe they at least understand why others considered them as flaws. Otherwise I wouldn't do it in a thread called "Things GTA IV gets criticized for you actually like".

Lack of planes doesn't bother me on GTA IV. I don't think it personally suits the map nor the story. I've never felt that it was missing from the game nor that the game would be better for including them.

Yeah I didn´t mind any planes. Not sure where it would fit in the story, and the map I guess since map size is also why it wouldn´t be any benefit. Only thing I see it worth being would be for gameplay fun or whatever like someone mentioned. Guess they only wanted to add things that you would use in missions or whatever. Plus I think they were trying to go for that realistic approach. Oh well Im grateful for what we did get. It was all fun in the end.

But the option to choose part is simply unnecessary. Planes sure I can understand, although with GTA IV's map they wouldnt work unless they added a countryside like originally planned but a Jetpack doesn't add anything to the game. It breaks immersion and feels too much like an easy cheat. Even its inclusion in SA felt forced as hell

Couldn't disagree more but Whatever. Except for the countryside part.

Like I said By removing the choice you might as well just include one of each type of vehicle because they all get the job done.

It also makes the player more vulnerable to gunfire and it's slow as f*ck. As usual with the jetpack obsession it's only the positives that are put forward, but hardly the negatives. I could understand if it was built up as some core vehicle from the beginning of the series with a vital role to play, but the fact is it's only a glorified novelty item that was included in ONE GTA game before GTA IV and after years of pestering by whiny San Andreas fanboys R* finally caved in and included it in GTAO, but not GTA V.

Honestly there haven't been too many times if at all where I've been playing GTA IV where I've thought "Geez I really wish I had a jetpack to get into that tight spot". I'm only ever reminded the jetpack exists when I come on here.
