I'm Selling Everything & Going Old School... Could You?

In an effort to glean some kind of freshness from my time spent in GTAO these days, I've decided to get all dramatic and sell everything from my garages.

This is not some mid-life crisis or an effort to bash R* or the game for being deficient in some way, but rather my way of extending the life of the game I've enjoyed for these past many years, now.

I have far too many vehicles that I just do not use any more, ranging from all those released from previous DLCs and nostalgic cars that I've been holding onto for who-knows-why.
But even more, I have flying cars, flying motorcycles, monstrous armoured vehicles, and a three wheeled bike that just makes no sense as to why I've even kept it.

Not to mention, I have just about every Pegasus vehicle that I can't get rid of, just sitting in a stable waiting for me to call upon.

And then of course, there's the Hangar. I can't remember the last time I took out my Seabreeze or Bombushka!

Now, don't get me wrong, every single vehicle is still fun, in its own right, but I am just trying to eek out more entertainment value from my time in-game, which I'm just not getting right now.

I've decided to go back in time, to an old-school mindset of playing. Lately, I've been driving my original cars like the Issi, Cheetah, and Sandking. And it's been so much fun!
I've gone back to spending quality time tooling around on my Bati 801, Ruffian, and Akuma, tearing through traffic and jumping over every short wall in sight.

Last night, in fact, I spent over an hour revisiting my old stunting stomping grounds which, believe it or not, made me incredibly happy!

I took my old Scorcher off the wall and spent another hour up in the hills just having the best time!

Some might say that I shouldn't sell things and just put them away in storage for later. But, for me, not actually even having them available will force me to use the things I have.
Maybe I'll go back and repurchase things I sold – I don't know yet.

But for now, I've been thoroughly enjoying these new limitations I've put on my game and having access to original vehicles – yet, keeping my level and character in-tact. I don't want to lose that.

TL;DR
I'm selling off my fancy new stuff, like flying vehicles and armoured cars, to go back to the original set I had back in the 2014 days of GTAO.
What is your thought on the idea of doing something like this for yourself (not that you should, just curious about the idea of it)?
Would you be too full of regret or seller's remorse?
Is it something you've already done and have insight to?
Do you think it's a stupid idea or something that, for the right people, would enhance their game and make the experience more entertaining?

As always, curious to hear from you if you're interested. Hope all is well! Cheers! :)

One of my favorite "old school" things to do is push dumpsters into positions I can use to jump from to get to obscure locations. Still a ton of fun!

you'll get flagged for dupes at your first garage and will have to literally throw away the rest of your cars. Why don't just create a new character?

i tried, with a second character, but i felt a bit uneasy after a short while. back on my primary i still had every opportunity to do everything. i've stepped out of the full time grinder shoes a while ago, and made it a point to do stuff, and that stuff can be whatever stuff. loafing around in a cargobob, driving around, waiting for players to invite me to stuff, even the odd bicycling and such.

i will admit i am a bit of a completionist, which is why starting all over made me a bit uneasy. having done all the stuff on the primary and then setting it aside felt a bit wasted. i know it will be there, but i saw no point in having a blank slate, when it really wasn't very blank - i've done tons of stuff, and why shouldn't i have that around me as well?

i suppose the point is my focus and your focus on the game - it is what it is to any one of us. heading to one of my garages and pull out something that would seem interesting is good enough for me.

as for the bombushka, well, i have flown mine once! keeping it for the inevitable money wipe!~

It's actually a really neat idea. Would definitely open a lot of new and unique opportunities.

Oh, definitely. I tend to get too attached to things I even remotely liked. It's a bit of a problem that unfortunately I don't think I can do anything about on my own, but at least I know when to let go of things when I really have to or they're just trash. For that reason I never actually sold any cars from my garage apart from deprecated duplicates I really don't need and temporary cars I collect to sell on, and never will. I only get a fraction for selling them on anyway, so if I ever want anything back, I'll lose a ton of money. Starting from scratch on another character/account is the only way for me to have a clean slate and keep my money.

Technically, yes. I have a PC account and a second PS4 account where I keep things limited and down to earth. Basically playing as the character, who has her own lore and backstory that I have created years ago and am still expanding on. On the PC account I allowed myself some liberty by getting and doing some "out-of-character" things, and getting expensive stuff, etc, since that was the only current-gen platform I could play on before I got my PS4.

However, on PS4 it's strictly Paleto, cheap stuff, more-or-less tactical gameplay, no aircraft or military vehicles and especially no meme things. Pretty much the same rule set as on PC, but I'm sticking to it more here. The main vehicles I use are the Gresley for VIP (yes, VIP, not CEO), Sadler for Bunker/Gunrunning (yes, from Paleto), and BF Injection for offroading/messing around (I also have a Tailgater from the first race, Sovereign and Liberator because patriot (and time limited content), custom Ratloader I stole from Beeker's to sell sometime, and Nightshark + Revolter from guest list). And I enjoy driving those vehicles, they're a really amazing change from the flashy, expensive, and unrealistic stuff I have access to on my main account.

Not only that, by not having anything of value (or money), I get to experiment with everything the game has to offer that I never bothered to do or even check out when I played on my main PS4 or PC. Switched haircuts a few times (I used to strictly sport the Wavy Bob since that's in the character's canon, yet currently using Ponytail), created new and fresh outfits from items I didn't even knew were there (not to mention actually regularly changing clothes), used the aforementioned cars, use non-OP weapons (I will not buy the Homing Launcher, or any other available-from-the-start DLC weapons at least until I unlock the equivalents), etc. It's a completely new experience for me that somehow makes this game bearable leading up to RDRII.

The latter. As said above, it can offer a fresh experience. Maybe even take you back to the first days of GTAO. Though it still depends on the player, some would rather keep everything or stick to PvP so they'd probably not want to do that. Some may just not want to have to grind everything back. I feel like it'd be easier and more worth it to just make a new character/account too, if you end up not liking it you can always go back to how it was before.

I won't do it, that simple. I can actually achieve the same or even better result by creating another character, but I won't to do that either. All the toys I have serve some purpose and in fact are quite valuable in game. Going back to 0 for me makes zero sense, because ultimately I will be either forced to repurchase them again or just got stuck without them, and that makes zero sense for me. I don't like the Oppressors, but they're good for transportation. Knowing that I have one I won't use slower bike unless I'm in for a fun in a slow lane, but selling the toy I have, that's beyond. I'm not that emotionally attached to my in-game possessions, I can walk away from my character in 1 day and never came back, but I won't amputate parts of my experience.

Knowing there are dominant vehicles in the game it makes little sense to deprive yourself of them, especially if you have other options.

My opinion, fw3, you have too much time on your hands. Keep your toys, play some other game. The thing is 5 years old (officially now), it won't be like the old times and you know it.

I'm with the others on this, you could've achieved the same result by creating a second character.

You can't sell what you don't have. ;)

I can downsize my vehicle collection by half or even two thirds if I really need to, but I'll NOT get rid of everything. I've spent way too much time, money & effort building my collection.

Properties on the other hand? I'll happily sell or even delete 4 of all my 6 residential properties no problem.

Create a second char and start leveling him/her up, it feels old school enough. :D

he probably didn't make a new character because he still wanted to be, well, him. That being said, it would be neat to spawn back in from a contact mission, get in my Entity XF and head to my downtown medium end apartment again, reliving the glory days

Solid Scorpion

I'd love a return back to basics to some degree but no way in hell could I part with all my precious automobiles.

I've been debating with myself whether to start a new char on my second account, just to see how overwhelming it is to new players.

I haven't seen that plane landing cutscene in years but I know for a fact as soon as my character steps off that plane, they and Lemar will instantly go up in flames and get bombarded with calls from some LJT guy.

I made a new character once I've reached the point when I had basically everything I wanted, just to get some fresh experience. It was during a double money week for contact missions, and I really enjoyed doing them with a low health character, as well as with no weapons or vehicles making my life easier, like Kuruma or Buzzard. Just me, pistol, and Bati 801. It was fun, and I revisit this character sometimes, if I'm somewhat bored and need a refresher, some fair challenge. Something Doomsday Heist failed at, since its difficulty is artifficially bumped, and aimbot ubermensch enemies take forever to kill - it's neither fun nor fair. Good old contact missions can really be enjoyable and challenging at times without any equipment.

That's the way to go, in my opinion - start a new character instead of burning down a bridge with the current one.

I did not spend countless hours performing tedious tasks building up my wealth just to throw it all away or ignore most of it.

Drugs, guns, cars and various types of cargo. Collecting 1110+ crates a while ago to sell during a bonus event. Hundreds (at least) vehicles stolen off the street and sold for a small profit.

Heist challenge runs, contact mission grinding. Free mode activities ("last gen") and more.

There's yet no evidence that we're going to have one or more lives after we die and our current lives are short enough already. When I choose to spend this much time playing a game as a means to an end, I'm not going to suddenly say that said end is worth forgetting about for no good reason.

And even if I got all my stuff for free and I never spent a single minute doing something in GTA:O that I did not do purely for my enjoyment rather than making money, it still wouldn't make sense. The only reason I can think of to even consider this is to pretend the game isn't where it is now. That we're not in 2018. But the only way to do that is to also never play in public sessions or with most people you play with ever again because that illusion will be broken easily and quickly.

That said, I've actually spent very little time in populated sessions myself lately. And since I started playing this game (and previous GTA titles) I've always been interested in casual fun. I often grab a car I haven't used in a good while for fun. Sometimes when I'm in the city I'll jump on a BMX for some crappy grinding sessions. Or the scorcher in Paleto for a short forest run. There's no need to get rid of anything. Just like how people say about (youtube) videos that if you don't like it you shouldn't watch it, I say that if you don't want to use it, leave it in the garage.

If you've put in the sort of time and effort that I have (or more, I'm not even rich compared to many other players, exploits or not) and you can easily decide to throw that all away, then I'm happy for you. Because somehow, you're able to find more enjoyment in the moment than I can and you're able to shut off the past since it has no bearing on the future. I find that to be somewhat extraordinary. Or if achieved through personal discipline, admirable. Good for you.

I think that I wouldn't be able to do this as i spent time earning the money to get those vehicles. Plus everyone else is decked out with opressors, deluxos etc.... Personally I'll just bide my time for the next GTA where everyone will start from the beginning. (Probably going to be released in like 5+ years )

@fw3 man I admire your determination to keep the game fresh... mad props!

however selling off all my digital possessions is a bridge too far for me. I've been rollin in my Futo again tho and there is a tonne of fun to be had in the OG vehicles, agreed there.

a new character however- starting at lvl 1 might be something I do while killing time till RDR2.

another great thread man.

thanks for helping keep this place decent!

Sounds like a crazy idea. Why sell anything? You should achieve the same thing by just not suing certain things.

It's a game, and I'm not worried about losing anything (I still have plenty of money to rebuy everything I sell).

What I do want is to limit my own options to what I can use in the game. And yeah, I may totally regret it a week later, but hey... living on the edge is my thing! lol! :)

I couldn't do it unless I had to, when I got a month suspension, I did a new PSN account, once was enough for me.

I didn't want to go through that when I bought computer so I paid for a recovery menu..but a public one got me caught and now have to re-recovery.. lol

Nah I couldn't do that. My collection of vehicles and everything I own is what shows my progress through the game.

The thing is however that most vehicles I use are more or less regular vehicles anyway and if I want a more limit approche I just switch to my secondary char.

I very much can relate to the spiritual needs of occasional space clearing, of "burning your ships", and respect highly people that do this, I did too occasionally in other life situations, but I don't see my digital life in San Andreas becoming such a situation, no.

There are some vehicles I simply don't like to part with, from a collector's point of view, but neither am I a hoarder, in fact I regularly sell vehicles when I realize I don't use them often enough or the "feeling's just gone". I very much like the "old school feeling", too, however. Only last week I dedicated almost entirely to tackling contact missions with my Day-One-Tornado, the AP pistol, and the Revolver (admittedly the Mk-II version, though), and wearing one of my oldest outfits, too.

That worked to my satisfaction - I was perfectly happy NOT calling in the big guns - and I don't feel I have to do the radical thing and sell stuff just to affirm me of my independence of it. Since I don't feel fed up, I don't need this kind of crash diet.

Every time I convince myself to sell a vehicle that is just collecting dust, I immediately fall in love with it again during my drive to LSC, so no I probably couldn't do it. It helps that only a third or so of my garages actually contains vehicles and isn't just a large empty room, so I never feel like I'm running out of space.

I started from scratch on PS4 in 2016 after making the huge mistake of transferring my original account to PC. One fresh start is enough for me.

I enjoyed the process of rebuilding but after the hours upon hours of grinding to get my garages to a point where I'm more or less satisfied there is no way I could sell it all.

I created a second character to achieve the more stripped back approach. I barely use it, but I do keep it as basic as possible. I don't own any businesses on it, only have basic weapons and don't buy cars, only storable street cars. It also has to be self sustainable, my main doesn't fund my second with a single Dollar.

On that character I roleplay in a low level street crime way, rob stores, deliver cars to Simeon, farm modded NPC cars etc.

It's still on rank 120.

Naw went through all the trials and tribulations of 2013 and made it out without resorting to money drops or car duping. "Old School" grind...nonstop contact missions until the first businesses emerged.

LOL!! Thanks hei3enberg! However, it's actually just the opposite for me – I have almost NO time on my hands anymore.

You know, work, family, house, etc. For me it comes down to spending quality time actually playing the game I love (and no, there is no other game I want to play or have time to play), and when I have that hour or two every couple of days to sit with GTAO, I want it to be meaningful entertainment, not just flying around and locking onto other players without even thinking about it.

Like I said, I want to keep my character and my stats/level, but I guess I want to play as clean as I did back when I started. I may even start dragging out the old Rhino Tank once in a while, just for giggles. I'm sure that most of the late-comer 15-year old CEOs in GTAO have never even called Pegasus, before. lol!

Anyhow, if you have any extra time you'd like to share, I'd be happy to have it! lol! Cheers! :)
