Most tragic character of the GTA Series?

Who in your opinion is the most tragic character of the GTA Series? Whenever it'd be the 3D or HD Universe

Imo it would have to be Phil Cassidy as he had a abusive drunken father as a child, had a abusive brother in law who abused his sister Louis and her child and lost his sister Louis later on in the events of GTA VCS and three years later during the events of GTA Vice City he lost his best friend Victor Vance in the intro of the game later on he went and lost his right arm due to being a addicted drunk and during the events of GTA LCS & 3 it seems like he possibly lost touch with his family despite owning his own business in the two games

Floyd from GTA V. Tries to live a normal life until Trevor invades his house, breaks stuff and abuses him (possibly sexually as well). Also his fiancee Debra has been cheating behind his back. It doesn't end too well for him either and Wade has got no idea.

That, or the foreman in San Andreas stuck in a portable toilet and buried alive in cement.

Floyd was a pretty tragic character along with that foreman as he did nothing wrong. Another candidate for this would also be Janet Vance aka the mother of Victor & Lance as she's addicted to drugs and only one of her children is alive with that being Pete Vance

Floyd's treatment is one of the reasons Trevor's a low life piece of sh*t to me.  Probably the only time throughout GTA V's mediocre story I felt some sympathy for one of the characters. Poor guy.

Roman in the Deal ending made a great tragedy. Being shot the moment he was happy realizing he's reached the American dream.

I would love to meet the sick players (not really lol) that chose the Revenge ending and killed Francis McReary who would most likely not consider that Maureen McReary will die a lonely death after the years of looking over her dysfunctional family. It is confirmed that Derrick dies, Gerald got pinched, and Patrick left Liberty City. Who else is left to take care of this elderly woman?

Floyd I didn't feel too bad, he let Debra cheat on him behind his back and was raised to follow the rules.

Foreman harassed Kendl, but then again, she may have been manipulative... we don't know.

-Roman:He has to deal with all kinds of crap because of his selfish cousin.

-Floyd:It's sad. But He chose the wrong women for a girlfriend. And well Trevor does what trevor does.

-Aiden O'Malley:f*ck Derrick.

If you think about it really hard, Claude. Imagine how heartbreaking would it be for you love of nine years just go and try to kill you one day. And then, well, he has no one left. After he finishes his revenge, only thing he's left is Maria, a person who he doesn't care about. (That is, if he doesn't kill her.) Kind of a Shaggy Dog story in the end.

Sure, but someone who still feels guilty to this day for stealing a pencil in elementary school, it's no wonder Debra can easily use him...

I totally agree with this. Also I'm sure Claude didn't kill Maria Latore at the end as when you think about it he actually cares and has respect for her which hints why he saved her in the first place. Claude likely just shot his gun in the sky as a warning and to get her to shut up.

I mean if Claude truly didn't care about Maria or have respect for her then he would have just let the Colombian Cartel kill her during the last mission of the game then get his revenge on Catalina.

Johnny had a really bad life from 2008 to 2013.Some of his close friends (Jim and Jason) got killed, after a civil war broke out in The Lost MC he was forced to kill his former friends (including Billy and Brian), he had a junkie girlfriend Ashley who always got into trouble and he would always have to help her, he and whatever was left of his chapter moved out of their home town Alderney, after 2008 he got addicted to drugs, and in 2013 he found out Ashley was cheating on him with Trevor and he got killed by Trevor after confronting him. There are also some hints that before 2008 he had a motorcycle crash and that at some point in his life he was in jail,so his life probably wasn't much better before 2008 either.

Floyd- Living a normal life (though Debra was cheating on him) but soon Trevor and his long lost cousin shows up and ruins his life. He gets physically, mentally, sexually harassed by Trevor and then at last he gets killed. Gotta feel bad for him.

Aiden O'Malley- I really felt bad for him as he genuinely thought that Niko and Packie were breaking him out. First Derrick snitched on him, got him caught and then got him killed, f*ck.

Foreman in SA.

Lemoyne outlaw

niko. he had a very sad past. his family was poor. and then when he was off to war he lost almost all of his comrades and friends because of a traitor. and then bulgarin was after him and he had to flee. so he decided to move to america and enjoy the american dream with roman. until he found out roman was lying. he didint plan on killing or being a criminal again. but sure enough he gets sucked into it again. and at the end of the game. he either loses his cousin and best friend. or his girlfriend. and even if she lives she breaks up with him. i only hope niko is happier now and living a better life.

trevor. i know trevor is hated a lot. but he also had a tragic past. his mom treated him like crap. his dad abandoned him at a mall. he was in the air force. but some evil witch kicked him out. just think all the people the died from trevor. could have all been alive if he was still in the military. even johnny k. so if anyone wants to hate someone hate her. and then when he found something he was good at being a criminal. michael his best friend betrays his crew. and then flash forward to current day. and even when he gets back with the crew and things seem to be going well. he can possibly be betrayed by another of his friends and killed. and michael is right there watching without a care. but thankfully i didint choose that option.

Very interesting question. I work in psychology, so I wonder how people come to these questions and answer them about video games. Rockstar has always created such deep characters, going beyond mere violence. This reminds me a bit of the Sopranos, when Tony Soprano kills his cousin - killing other/rival mobsters is a 'bad' death, but killing one of his own is a 'tragic' killing because it's in the family/the circle:

Spoiler

I think this is kinda like Roman or Mallorie in GTA 4. Plus, it leaves Tony feeling a bit empty, as Niko feels if exacting revenge on Darko

Depending on which choice you make in GTA 5, maybe Franklin is one of the most tragic characters for that reason. Well, hopefully this thread keeps the peace so to speak (and doesn't look like a Trevor Phillips bloodbath by the end of it!). This song came on and was kinda fitting - I felt a bit like Fernando from Vice City, getting all emotional and stuff, joo-know?! Rockstar sure can create an atmosphere.

Anyway, I reckon Niko is the most tragic character. Why? Because whatever ending you choose, the so-called American Dream is really either a loss or an empty victory really. Niko is arguably a bit of a psychopath, so I think that he's doomed and tragic like most psychopaths (again, think Tony Soprano here). The early GTA characters such as Claude and CJ were very good (especially silent Claude!), but in my opinion they lack some of the character depth/story arc of later characters. (Mind you, I really did like SA for its different RPG-like qualities though, like working out vs becoming a blubberbutt, martial arts styles, eating, etc.).

<snip>

I think that Niko's character is the most believable/the one people can most identify with - sold out, unemployed (usually a precursor of crime and tragic outcomes), living in Hove Beach (with most of Liberty City's other immigrants until he's practically burnt out of that place), and trying to escape one past but not, trying to make a new life but really making things even worse for him and his cousin and others around them, and maybe deceiving himself into thinking that things will be different. Maybe I'm wrong but around 2008/the financial downturn, I think that a lot of people felt the way Niko felt - his character is both believable and I think appropriate for the time in which he was created.

Miguel from GTA 3 meets a tragic fate, he's betrayed by his girlfriend who wounds him by bullet, tortured during days for a murder he didn't commit, never receives any medical treatment and finally gets cowardly assassinated, maybe betrayed by his own gang.

Poor Miguel i actually felt bad for him during the story of the game. Also he's a pretty innocent antagonist in GTA 3 when you think about it as he never wanted to kill Claude and had no interest in doing so.

Kind of like Chan Jaoming in GTA Chinatown Wars, he treats Huang as his best friend even during the mission where you have to kill him. He was 100% innocent.

I think CJ may be one of the luckiest and unluckiest guys in the GTA series.

Think about it.

At the start of the game, his mother ends up get wiped out, he's framed for the death of a cop, his money gets stolen by CRASH, is disrespected by his brother, has to manage a crumbling and dying gang, his friends (B Dup, Big Bear) became a drug dealing pusher and a crack bitch, has to work hard to become an OG once again, CRASH has him by the balls and he lacks somewhat in weapon skill (he had to be taught how to shoot again by Emmet).

Soon, when Carl is at the top of his game, he ends up getting betrayed by his closest friends, finds out those friends are responsible for his mother's death, gets dumped into the countryside by CRASH where his gang status don't mean sh*t, his brother's locked up, and there's this sense of powerlessness as he literally has no option but to do the dirty criminal work in the countryside. You really feel for the guy as the most valuable thing he has right now is some sh*tty trailer home.

When we get to San Fierro, it only gets a small bit better as he owns a garage but that garage ends up being a sh*thole and he is a bit of a nobody when he arrives in SF. He soon has to help and then painfully dismantle the Loco Syndicate and soon is forced to kill one of his best childhood friends. The guy even shows he regrets the killing despite that friend being a nasty snake. Oh, and let's not forget he has to help out some asshole with RC toys.

Then we arrive to the desert. While there, he has to do some insane sh*t, like bombing a plane while it's still in flight and having to deliver a package while under the radar, just so his brother can sleep safe in prison. It's crazy you know, he has no option but to do these things just so he can get that ungrateful prick jailbird out of the penitentiary. And just like the countryside, he's confined to another corrugated metal death shack, only this time, all he has for company are some unsolid hawks instead of rednecks.

Now Las Venturas. While he is lucky to own a casino, it comes with a price. He finds out that he is now in the middle of a gang war with the Triads and the Mafia. Johnson then has to bend over backwards so he can commit the perfect heist on Caligulas and get revenge on these wiseguys. And while residing in LV, he is also forced to chase a guy with a chopper just for a dossier and is almost left for dead in the desert by the pigs.

Finally, we return to Los Santos. Once there, he finally manages to make his brother free but is promptly berated by him for "forgetting about his homies", ignoring the fact Carl had to steal a f*cking jet just so he could be released. And once CJ's back to business in Ganton, he has to work hard to make GSF big again. And I mean really hard (he has to take over many territories and sh*t.). Soon, he is forced to kill his lifelong pal and laments his death, even though Smoke was evil for what he had done.

So in short, CJ may own some of the biggest businesses in San Andreas, but each step-up for Carl didn't come easy.

I know that I already said this but when you think about it the Vance family is pretty tragic because both Victor and Lance are dead in the events of GTA Vice City, Janet Vance possibly died of a drug overdose due to being addicted to drugs some years after GTA Vice City and the only two surviving family members of the Vance family are Pete Vance and Aunt Enid

Floyd has the most unjustice fate in the series, but OG Loc is the most tragic figure.  Presupposing upon his relationships with the Grove Street elites to achieve fame and fortune only to lose it all through his hubris.  Disdainful of the simple truth that those who lifted him to the very heights could and would throw him back to Earth if and when he failed to show due deference to all his benefactors.

Trevor he is a miserable maggot, since he began his criminal career, his existence was intolerable as a scum he was beyond

a pro.

Trevor's death was very tragic to the writer's point of view.

Another tragic fool was the scum Anthony Prince, his life of hate

me you effin' racist bigot writer is really another trick he learned

from Claude.

Although unpublished his death will certainly blow the crap out

of our canon/story.

Huang Lee is a tragic character like Niko Bellic, the only difference is Huang was already a rich kid in Hong Kong and never worked too hard in his life, he came to LC just to do a favor. But you need to think about it, all of people in his life, or betrayed him, or dead, his father was killed by his uncle, his uncle was the one who tried to kill him at the airport and the reason to all of the sh*t he has been through, but he didn't even know it until the last mission

In GTA IV, at least if you choose revenge ending, Roman is still alive and Niko still has a family. But what about Huang? He ended up alone, no family, no friend, yeah he's still a rich man, but does that mean much to him...
