Advice on which console for a PC player

Recommended Posts

Jimbatron

I'm primarily on the PC, although I have a trusty PS3 that's been with me since 2004!

With RDR2 coming out it might be an excuse to upgrade to the latest generation of consoles. But the obvious question - should it be Xbox One or PS4? Just because I've had a PS in the past doesn't mean I'll automatically go with it again.

Interested in opinions in and balanced views of the pros and cons of each console. No fanboyism please!

Assuming you're going to use the console for more than RDR2 alone, I'd say look at the exclusives for each console and go with the one you think have the best ones. In my opinion the PS4 is the better choice, because you get access to games like God of War, Spider-Man, The Last of Us, Until Dawn, the entire Uncharted collection and more. While the Xbox isn't a bad console per se (and the One X has some impressive hardware), ultimately you're going to buy a console for the games available on it. Going by that I'd say a PS4 is the better choice.

Xbox One X, but coming from someone who loves Halo and Forza Horizon.

I might buy a PS4 for TLoU and Uncharted later on :)

But if rdr2 will be the only game, then Xbox One X it is.

For the least cash outlay for a console I see that Cash Converters may still have a deal on for a standard 500GB Xbox One at the tempting price of £114.99 (Edinburgh branches, may be national?) - deal also includes one controller and all the necessary cabling.

There are lots of backwards compatible 360 titles available including RDR.

I see no point in spending a whack on a console (4k etc.) as you'll get all those bells & whistles anyway when it eventually releases on PC.

So for less than the price of a GTX 1050 go the Microsoft route.

Also there will be a lot of COD dads and offspring buying RDR2 & they'll not get into it because of the slower pace and more intelligent storyline so hold off buying right on release and let a few weeks pass and they will start popping up on eBay & Gumtree for £20 - £30.

Sony has a marketing deal with R*, so 'select' online content will appear first on the PS4. Not sure if that changes anything

As a PC gamer myself I really can't justify buying an Xbox One. I wanted one, to play RDR in 4k, but there isn't a single title I'm interested in, that's not on PC\PS4. So ultimately decided to grab the old 360 from storage and replay RDR on there instead.

PS4 also has a lot of exclusives not available on PC, and more to come.

Visually, V is ever so slightly better on the Base PS4 because (if I remember correctly) it has more grass than the X1 (or that was the case at launch, not sure if still is?). Either way, they are virtually the same visually so I wouldn't use that as an argument to get one over the other.
On the flip side, the Xbox One X could outperform the PS4 Pro. On paper the One X has better specs, it's however up to developer if they utilize that or not. V never got patched on the '4k consoles' so we can't use that as any indication.

Gonna try to be helpful and not biased here. As an owner luckily of both systems, I'll ask first do you play any other games like older titles?? Or are you just interested in new games like the best exclusives?? PlayStation definitely has the best exclusives no denying that.. there's so many greats I could list.. a few of my favorites are Bloodborne, Uncharted, TLOU, God Of War, Spider-Man, Nioh, Horizon Zero Dawn etc... I love the PS4 but I've always preferred Xbox as a whole. PS4 will get RDR2 certain content first but the Xbox One X is truly the best console on the market going by facts, not just opinion. If you want to have backwards compatible games\game pass and the best possible looking out there for the game, go with Xbox One X which is also closest to a PC level experience. (If you go 4k) if you care less about older games being revisited, and would rather have brand new amazing games and want select content first go with PS4 Pro . Keep in mind RDR2 is CONFIRMED to have 4K, Xbox One X\PS4 Pro enhanced and freaking HDR!!! This game is gonna be crazy!!! So put some good thought in your choice to enjoy it to the fullest first time you play it!!

I prefer Xbox, and would personally love to upgrade to an One X.

BUT, If you've had a PS3 for so long you might like to controllers better.  Or maybe if have some friends on PSN?

Other than that I think it'd boil down to exclusives (which is persona opinion).  And tech specs, which I don't know much about but I hear the One X is amazing.

I would base it on friends (Unless you are playing single player only) and exclusives. Xbox one is stronger than PS4 (I don't believe the difference is too big) but the exclusives are far better on PS4 imo. Xbox one does have backwards compatibility but if you are going to play RDR2, I don't see too much use in that unless you want to get a playthrough of RDR or something done before RDR2 comes out.

Base PS4 is more powerful than the base Xbox One and has some really great exclusives you can play now and also over the next few years.

The Xbox One X is the most powerful console but given that Sony have the marketing deal it's entirely possible that Rockstar make the two "enhanced" versions identical.

Personally I'd go PS4, as playing those exclusives will get you better value out of your purchase. God of War, Horizon, Uncharted, TLOU: Remastered will be easy to catch on sale now as well.

I'm an Xbox owner and I love my Xbox but I've gotta recommend PS4 just for the games. Xbox has a lot of exclusive's I like but none of them are really exclusive. I think ever since Quantum Break all Xbox "exclusives" also come out on Windows PC as well. Since you're primarily a PC Gamer you've already got access to those games.

This... The games of PS4 are worth not missing out on. Xboxhas some good games too just not all my taste for what there is. Quantum break is pretty cool and I love gears of war but it got kinda stale imo

If you have a Windows 10 DirectX 12 PC buy a Playstation, because you can play Forza on your PC. Well if your a Forza player :D. You can also buy Gran Turismo for PS4 this way you got the 2 best racing games.

I have an Xbox S and I am worried about playing RDR 2 in 900p and not true 1080p, like a lot of games on Xbox (Shadow of Tomb Raider just released is only 900p)

But I just don't think I can vindicate paying £450, and the price of the game, for the Xbox X. I really don't know what to do here, as not only is the resolution worrying, I notice my copy of GTA 5 is certainly not up to par on Xbox S. The loading times are dreadful, the world loads in slowly at times when i first start the game, pop up is awful, I hit so many pylons when I fly around in GTA Online it's not funny anymore. But that's GTA Online, which has been bogged down with so many updates, and is 5 years old, so it's unfair to compare it with a game that isn't even out yet.

The PS4 Pro is a good alternative, as it has exclusives I want to play, but it doesn't have a 4k Blu Ray player. Then again, the Xbox S does, so perhaps keeping that for Blu Ray and buying the PS4 Pro for gaming, perhaps on Black Friday, might be the way to go.

I have friends that want to play with me on RDR 2, so maybe buying two copies of the game, one for online only and one on the PS4 PRO would work out, but that just seems like added expense.

I'd love to see just how much difference there will be between all 4 versions of the game, but unless there's a comparison video, or a Digital Foundry analysis, released right before the game launches, waiting for that info would certainly ruin my midnight launch plans..

First world problems...

Thanks for some great responses here. Lots of things that might help other people too. I'm comfortable with either controller type (I have a Microsoft pad for flying in GTA PC, and obviously my old PS3).

There's a compelling argument for the PS4 on other exclusive games, but then in real life, I have more friends with an Xbox. So maybe no closer to making a decision yet!

Does either/both have built in recording facilities for game footage (e.g. to make guides for Youtube etc) - and if so is one better than another (or more PC compatible for editing)?

I'd go with a PS4 Pro, if you have a decent gaming rig you can play most X-box stuff on it anyway so you may as well get your hands on all of the sweet exclusive titles that Sony has to offer.  Personally i'd do it just for The Last of Us Part II without even factoring in all of the other great exclusives.

No doubt the Xbox One X has the most impressive hardware, but as we all know the visible performance differences aren’t huge, sometimes not even noticeable, so what it ultimately boils down to is;

a) exclusives - as others have said. I prefer the exclusives that PS4 has but that’s a matter of preference. Though speaking for myself, I would pay up for a PS4 if ONLY to be able to play TLoU2. That’s how much I’m looking forward to that game. Apart from TLoU, PS has a lot of good exclusives that I prefer over XBox’s.

b) continuity and friends - if you have a PS3 and a PSN account already, things will transfer over including friends.

It’s just a shame that PS4 doesn’t have backwards compatibility, so any games you’ve purchased for PS3 won’t carry over.

Apart from those things, there’s not much difference. Controls are pretty much interchangeable.

Haven't had much luck lately with PS4 controllers. Had a few that start to stutter when using the forward movement. Three different controllers started doing it. Worst luck with controllers since I've started gaming. You'd think with all the gaming technology, they'd have much better controllers.

I still prefer PS over Xbox.

And yes I tried all the fixes that I found on the internet. No fixes were permanent. Had to buy new controllers.

The Pro has very minimal differences with the normal PS4. It's basically a scam. I'd suggest going for a normal PS4. cheap, good enough and you have loads of incredible exclusives over XBOX.

The both have native capabilities for editing videos, but the Xbox One X is the only one that can record natively at 4K without a capture card, plus it with Game DVR in the Windows 10 Xbox app you can manage your captures. BTW the XB1X should not only have the best version of RDR2 but the backwards compatible RDR1 will be the best version too. All that & most of friends on Xbox, I think the answer is a no-brainer.

None, wait until it comes out on PC instead of choosing an inferior version.

I can gurantee that you'll get the game spoiled before it comes out on PC.

Either...or both. Okay so maybe one.

If you're after best bang for buck simply to play RDR2, than a standard X1

If you want fairly good bang for buck and a greater game library standard PS4

Best console experience for RDR2, X1X

It's a weird world we live in, when Xbox is less viable option for a PC gamer...because Microsoft actually did something pro-consumer by releasing all future console exclusives on Win10 PC and adding crossplay as well as 1 purchase own it on PC/X1 with shared saves.

Xbox One X has more power but the differences with the PS4 pro are visually very small..With the PS4 exclusives in mind...Go for the PS4 pro👍

Considering how broken the original RDR was on the ps3, I would wait for reviews to come in
