What do you like about GTA IV's gameplay?

Recommended Posts

Soggy biscuits

I love how everything blends in with the environment, the New York style fits in with the story. I love how everything sounds as well (such as car sounds, how music plays when u leave a car, etc.)

This game has one of the best(if not THE BEST) storyline and missions ever.

Cutscenes and especially "execution cutscenes" are pure class, literally and the amount of emotions displayed in the cutscenes are so good. Also, the missions are so immersive, you just end up playing a lot of missions really in one go! When I first got this game as my Birthday gift from my uncle, many people who DID NOT play this game voiced their own opinion to me IRL of how this game is absolute sh*te and how "grey" it looks and so on.

But when I played it in 2013 for the first time, Oh Boy. What a game. Totally loved it! Random Characters were so cool. Some Side missions challenging and difficult but really really fun as compared to the typical ones from 3D Universe.

Long Story short, I loved everything in this game! It's a Masterpiece.

It's nice to see someone who was introduced to it fairly late still being able to enjoy it and not being phased by the common "opinions" on it.

It really is a masterpiece. One of the best games I've ever played.:)

One of the best? Uh uh. THE best, my friend! :)

Anyways, yet another one of my favorite things about GTA IV’s gameplay is that it was the first GTA to auto save. As good as VC, III, and to a lesser extent, SA, are, it does get a little irritating having to constantly go to your safe house in order to save. I also love how it was the first GTA to auto aim. Again, as good as those three 3D era games that I mentioned are, the aiming and crouching alike give me a bit of a headache.

It has some pretty good company though with the Red Dead games, Vice City, LA Noire, TLAD, Assassin's Creed II etc.😉

The "taking a cover" feature is a huge step from the 3D era games.

Also, the explosions look really good and detailed. For a 2008 game, the graphics look so good even in 2019!(11 years later)

The 2 reasons I was introduced late to this game was because
1. I had a really bad PC which could run GTA SA at 800*600 only

2. People kept criticizing this game without playing it and I was kinda ignorant to listen to those idiots too.

In 2013, I upgraded my PC and my uncle gifted me the DVD of one of the best games in the whole world and I'm thankful for that! As of now, I play the game on Steam and I gave the DVD of this game to my younger cousin in 2015 as he is a huge fan of GTA IV too. :D

Things i do enjoy about GTA IV is most likely the introduction of different things.

Being able to use transportation like the taxi and the Subway.

Stunt Jumps

The combat system (Taking cover and all sorts, being the first GTA game to have a mechanic like this)

Activities that you can do such as playing QUB3D, Pool, and Darts.

I also enjoy the story, mainly due to how long it is, like the start of it when you're just a normal fella, then eventually picking up a weapon and putting it to good use on the bad guys, and then the eventual decision making that ends in tragedy. TBOGT and TLAD also have good storys, but not as great as GTA IV, as they are more shorter.

Things i enjoy about Episodes from Liberty City.

TBOGT:

  • Trialathons
  • Parachuting (Like in Online where you could jump from a really high place, glide for a short time and then see how long you did it.)
  • Drug Busts (When you proceed through them, you unlock episodic themed weapons, so it saves having to call Armando (IIRC, correct if wrong, to buy them)
  • Nightclub bodyguard missions. (The side missions are pretty fun, but AFAIK, i think they can't be repeated, again if i am wrong feel free to correct)
  • Yusuf Amirs Super Drop Diamond, i do not know why, but i like it, most likely because you can get the Golden SMG when you first use it (OP weapon tbh)
  • The APC: The one time you can just take it for a spin, put it to good use against the police, then drive until it catches fire, better compared to GTA V when the police just drive right into the tank and blow up which damages the tank
  • Departure Time (Final TBOGT mission)
  • Dropping In: I love that shootout in the MeTV bulding.

TLAD:

  • Gang Wars
  • Anguses Bike Thefts
  • Get Lost (Final TLAD mission)

I technically do have a lot of things i do love about the game. Tried to compose the things i do actually like

There's a million things. But one random thing, I love being able to pick stuff up and throw it at people. Nothing finer than knocking stuff out of people's hands and lobbing it back at them

Which reminds me, I love the shooting mechanics and the complex ways peds respond to being shot, including being able to shoot the gun out of their hands. The mechanics and physics of the game are simply superb, they allow for endlessly different engaging and entertaining scenarios and no other GTA's gameplay is so varied and unpredictable

It's amazing you know for what is a really simple mechanic how hilarious it can be. I love hurling burgers at NPCs and getting them pissed off so they fight me to see them eventually get arrested.

GTA IV's interwoven mechanics are wonderful.😛

Something I really enjoy is having a giant standoff with the police until I run out of ammo.

one of the best spots I found to do this was Pegorino’s house. I usually set up two cars spaced out from each other in the drive way. They act as my cover. Once the shootout starts, the police only ever come up the driveway. Never have to worry about cops sneaking from the back or the sides. Just always in front of me. The only thing to worry about is helicopters that eventually come, but my rocket launchers handle that.

sometimes I can switch to the back and start aiming down at the street. Eventually cops will only spawn down there too and I just have to worry about ahead of me. Plus there is a little patio or deck roof that covers me from the helicopters when back there.

a lot of fun times I have had with this little gig.

Never would've thought of doing it there, I'll have to try it. Love a good GTA IV police shootout. The fact that police/peds can be injured and incapacitated instead of just killed so there's people stumbling away injured, lying down groaning/talking or dying slowly as well as just dead, along with awesome weapon mechanics and sounds and complex responses to being shot, and the way explosions work where they might knock you back or make your ears ring rather than just killing you are all things that make shootouts particularly good in IV.

I love how the more stars you have the more intense everything gets I mean the other day my friend was crossing the bridge to Algonquin and was on the run for his life from the cops chasing and shooting and crashing into him , and then during a high speed chase , he crashed his car niko flew faaaar on the street and body slammed the concrete hard and before he could even get back up a coming cop car from far ahead was also speeding and just DECIDED TO RUN THE sh*t OF HIM OVER , boom , dead.

My mind = blown

my abs = flexed

my lungs = out of breath of laughter

my eyes = watery haha this is what I call a GTA experience I f*ckin. Love the adrenaline and the fun of this beauty

I also like the variety of law enforcement in IV. First off you have some fat cops instead of only boring skinny ones 😛, and later there's the FBI guys in suits and ties coming at you with machine guns that are cool, as well as the usual law enforcement. And the Enforcer looks awesome. Not to mention cops in the street! Obviously they have that in other GTAs (other than GTA V - big mistake to remove that imo as you totally lose that unpredictable element of looking around to check for cops before you do something, being surprised by one or not knowing whether there's a cop around that will hear your fighting/shooting right away or not, and just feeling their presence in the city) but they're not as interesting, in IV you can hear their conversations, watch them arresting people, mess with them a bit or trip up a criminal they're chasing and be thanked, without wanted stars. And when you get stars they react in interesting ways, jumping around to take cover and pointing guns at you to get you to stop rather than just shooting, trying to grab your car door to arrest you and getting dragged along the street, boxing you in with their cars etc. You can have loads of fun with them.

Yeah. The fat cops are the best.😉

I kid you Not fellas I was running from the po po one day (in gta obviously lol) On the bridge in Bohan the one where there’s construction and a ramp

So while I was running from this black cop I decided to do an experiment and see if I could maybe trick him into falling into the water , and so what happened was I was getting cornered and I started running panicly and I just jumped off the high bride into the deep water and guess what happened after I jump ? This niggah jumped off too!! He was swimming after me and I shot him once I got on a surface talk about a failed experiment lol these types of experiences is what I’m missing nowadays but man for a 2008 game the AI is so mother*cking revolutionary and easily kicks ass and holds up more than a decade after , hands down gta 4 will always go down as a legendary game no discussion

The Time Ranger

The physics are great, they still hold up. Also the randomness of gameplay, unscripted events which add to the game. For example, the stranger mission where Gracie recognises Niko and her goon squad attack, as this happened the LCPD were passing by and defended me by starting a firefight with them, I just sat back and watched the carnage unfold. That detail adds to the game.

I also like the car handling, the cars handle like boats criticism is valid to a certain extent but there was more skill involved in handling vehicles compared to other Gta titles, learning how a particular car handles and nailing a tight turn during a chase and seeing the LCPD crash as they try to take it is satisfying.

This is the benefit of having cops patrolling! Similar thing happened to me with Eddie Low one time, right as the cutscene ended and he was coming at me with a knife a cop car was coming by and all I had to do was watch them execute him. In this version of events the cops successfully caught the serial killer :D

This brings me to another cool aspect of IV's gameplay. When you're travelling with another character during a mission you can often have fun with them because in many cases they'll get out of the car and follow you and fight anyone who attacks you, and there's usually no limit on where you travel or the time. Even if they stay in the car you can usually have some fun hearing their reactions driving around doing stunts etc. So during a mission if you want to mess around you can go on a stabbing spree with Eddie or go out fighting people with Dimitri or get in a shootout with Packie (can even get him throwing molotovs at people sometimes) etc etc. Plus (unlike in V) you're allowed to attack/shoot characters you're "friends" with so you can easily kill them if you feel like it (and sometimes get rewarded with a fail cutscene/phone call). In the mission Do You Have Protection you can get in early and kill Dimitri in all kinds of creative ways  . And when doing missions properly there's the added bit of danger/action/unpredictability that you might accidentally shoot your friends during a shootout.
