What do you like about GTA IV's gameplay?

Recommended Posts

SonOfLiberty

Lets ignore the story for a second (as much as we all love it). What is it that you like about the gameplay?

For me number 1 is the side missions. Before GTA IV I never really done side missions in GTA games besides making money because the majority of them were just plain silly contextually (Criminals delivering pizzas, driving firetrucks, ambulances lol) so I appreciate GTA IV opted to match Niko's skillset with the side missions rather than wasting time on silly, nonsense like the 3D era.

I love all of GTA IV's side missions and like that the game randomises them on each repeat playthrough. Coupled with GTA IV's supreme shooting mechanics and driving it makes them far more enjoyable too.

Next would have to be the driving. I know the races are kind of weak since the A.I can be so easily beaten, but sometimes I just do them literally just so I can drive the cars and see what lap times I can get.

Oh and exploring the city never gets old even though I've explored the city from end to end.

Driving. It is so satisfying to do a 180 degree turn, reverse through the toll booth, and turn 180 again.

Shootouts with the cops. The tactics they use are more diverse than in 3D era games.

Euphoria. Messing with pedestrians is more fun than in GTA V.

Also the swingset glitch never gets old.

The Swingset glitch and hand to hand combat(also randomly pushing and screwing with NPCs) . That's it.

The clunky cover system ruins the shootouts for me although I like the shooting mechanics in this game.

The Driving HEAVILY puts me off doing any role-playing activity or do anything creative in free roam like I do in V and SA and VC.

Don't get me started with the missions which have a very repetitive layout(side missions are even worse)

How come this post does't surprise me? Seriously, I am really not sure whether you can't read, has no comprehension skills, simply trolling right now or are just plain dumb. Topic of this thread is pretty much clear - "to like," yet in three out of four points you had to sh*t on the game. If you don't like it, cool you don't have, but posting in every topic either positive or negative with solely reason to sh*t on the game is not nice. It doesn't make you funny or edgy either, but turns you into annoying dumb kid, always doing some crap just to annoy others. Go be edgy somewhere else, seriously.

OT:

- driving - the best driving in open world game, not focused only on driving. It has some flaws, like the excessive body roll, but it was extremely present despite it. I could really just drive for hours and observe working suspensions and how the cars react to the world around them.

- shooting - one of the reasons I love to replay GTA IV for. The shooting is very pleasant if you can feel the power of every bullet, flying around, breaking windows, blowing tires and throwing enemies around. Especially with these great sounds.

- minigames - I honestly like all these minigames included in GTA IV, from rather simple darts to pretty complicated bowling. I like going to one of places with friends and just chilling by the pool table or bottle of vodka. It gives that nice moment of peace between missions.

- comedy club - Hard to say should I include it in minigames, but it's not interactive, so I list it separately. GTA IV showed me three great comedians I was unfamiliar with, especially Ricky who became one of my favourites. It's a bit strange we didn't get anything in TBoGT especially that Omid Djalili was in the cast, so he could do a few routines, but maybe this side activity will get back one day?

- city by itself - great truly alive world, which amazes me to this day with its little details

- Euphoria - this game wouldn't be the same without this physics engine, so nicely tied to the mechanics of the game, where every step was a pleasure.

I don't know what it is about driving around during police chases and chucking grenades out of the window that just makes me feel so badass compared to all the other GTA titles.

There are many things that I like about it but I will only list off a few.

Euphoria/Ragdoll Physics: Just watching Niko flailing around is very funny. This is why I sometimes like jumping out of a vehicle.

Swingset Glitch: One of my most favorite glitches in a video game. You can never get bored of it! When I first did it though, it scared the sh*t out of me.

Shootouts/Cover System: The shootouts are awesome and it's filled with thrilling action! Not to mention that Niko can actually roll and slide to his cover spot.

Driving: The driving is actually pretty smooth by most standards. I don't see why so many people criticize it.

The City: According to the map, it actually has a total of 5 islands! Broker, South Bohan, Algonquin, Alderney, and Happiness Island. That's the most islands than in any other GTA map. Not to mention that it feels so alive and the peds are actually smart.

Activities: Bowling, Pool, Darts, Helicopter Tours, Comedy Clubs, and much much more.

By your logic we have to clear half the post of this entire forum. There are loads of "what do you like" threads in this forum loaded with both "positive and negative" points. It's just the way it is.

Seriously anytime I post sth negative about this game you seem kind of pissed off. you (or anyone) basically might have made the wrong choices in your life if someone else's post about a "game" annoys you. I'm tired of this bullsh*t. You basically cannot take criticism on this game at all.

OT:I don't know if it's allowed to talk about EFLC or not but since they are IV's DLCs I'll take a shot.

-the Vehicle variety in TBOGT

-the Backup feature(Terry and Clay) in TLAD

-the multiple unique weapons included in EFLC

-replaying missions in EFLC

Tyceks's post might have been abrasive, but he's right. Also trying to make justifications based on other threads doesn't make any sense to me as that really depends how those threads are constructed and whether they're intended to swing both ways. If I was interested to hear what people like/dislike I would've worded it as such.

All you had to do was just mention the things you like (even if it's just a couple) and that would've been fine. I'm not sure why you think anyone cares what you like to do in other GTA games which is why I didn't include EFLC in my OP so this thread is GTA IV only.

@TheSantader25

The feeling is mutual because I am tired of your bullsh*t as well. I don't have anything against the people criticizing the game, because I would flipped out and left the boards long time ago back in 2009/2010 when GTA IV section was a sh*tstorm. I have problem with annoying trolls who can't read or think and had to criticize the game everywhere even in positive topics. Arm Shaegar and George Walker Bush are not exactly IV fans, but even they act civilized posting something they liked about the game, even if it was one goddamned thing. But one troll had to rain on the parade, no matter what. You want to say bad things you got topics for it. Even recently new ones regarding Niko Bellic and game by itself were created and I am quite sure whine and complain thread was somewhere around as well.

There are various conventions around the world regarding different topics or deviations. Would you really go to Comic-Con to attack cosplayers or buy a ticket right under scene where Stones are playing only to scream Jagger sucks? What we got here is a form of virtual convention of GTA fans. Some people like one part, some like all of them and it's cool, because we all came here to talk about GTA and enjoy companion of people with taste similar to ours. Yet some guy has to run around and kick everybody in the nuts. And if my post was harsh, it's good, because it's exactly what I wanted it to be.

MiamiViceCity/Algonquin Assassin/Joker in the Pack (argh why did you changed your name again?) asked one simple question. I couldn't be much simplier I guess, but there was someone apparently who didn't understand it. Idiocracy was a good movie, but as it currently seems it may be prophetic.

OT:

- throwing random stuff at people - there a lot of various items (from pack of sauce, through computer mouse to bricks) each with its own properties and sound. It was really cool to see guy being hit by a flying dildo 😛

I remember when I first wanted to do drive-bys from normal taxis but it wasn't possible because the driver would escape. It was like a dream when I discovered Mohammed...

@TheSantader25

Your posts are more than welcome on this site. I've liked some of your great posts and you've also liked some of mine. GTA V and SA fans are not being oppressed on this site and people like me, Joker in the Pack, Tycek, etc. are NOT tyrants, fascists, and oppressors who hate GTA V, SA, and their fans, nor have we given anyone any legitimate reason to feel that way. As a matter of fact, I have a very close friend IRL (who has no account on here) who's favorite GTA is V. We don't treat V and SA fans any differently than anyone else on this site. We are not working against you, George Walker Bush, Am Shaegar, etc. I really hope I put your mind at ease. ;)

OT:

1. Niko Bellic

2. Johnny Klebitz

3. Luis Fernando Lopez

4. Friend and girlfriend hangouts

5. Getting taxi rides (I rarely ever steal taxis, taxi drivers are usually just too nice in GTA IV, EFLC, and V for me to do such a thing, lol, I have weird standards when it comes to GTA gameplay, :P)

6. Strip clubs (for some bizarre reason, I just love shooting them up in these games while hanging out with friends) (laughs wickedly) ^

7. The controls

8. The auto saving

9. The rock/metal/punk music on Liberty Rock Radio and Liberty City Hardcore

10. Well, most stuff! :)

Despite the fact I called IV's gameplay subpar in another topic, I actually really enjoyed a good few things in Liberty City:

  • The insane euphoria
  • The shooting mechanics
  • The weapon and explosion sounds
  • The explosions
  • The map
  • The shootouts with cops and crooks, which can end up fun at times

- Molotov's in this game look really nice (on impact obviously).
- Melee combat feels very punchy (no pun intended), heavy and satisfying with the counter moves.

- Shootouts

- LCPD

Thanks @Penguin Bob, great video showcasing some pretty cool (and nasty!) stunts with Euphoria. Does GTA 5 use the same system fully? The way some people describe GTA 4 and Euphoria suggests that GTA 5 did not take [full] advantage of it. Maybe I'm wrong.

This I do a lot, although I wonder if GTA 4 could be even better in this way by having a script like this one for GTA 5 (adding interesting random events such as different peds, activities, vehicles and the like). I like the sound of footsteps on cobblestone, but I can't stand real-world cities, eugh! It's good to know I can turn Liberty City on and off - in fact, with trainers I think you can turn peds and traffic on and off, though it is much less interesting that way.

Is there a list of the objects you can pick up? I use trial and error but so far I've only found a few small items (poor Niko can hijack a squad car in broad daylight but can't break a damn coffee mug when thrown, haha!). I liked the GTA:SA dildo as a weapon. Imagine if you'd heard the dispatcher: "Uh...we've got a 10-80 in Vinewood Hills with uh...a pink rabbit."

I agree here, the driving is a bit flawd in ways but I like it overall. Park a Sabre on a destroyed fire hydrant and watch it's suspension wobble a little. I like the way cars like Roman's Esperanto clunk when you hit an uneven patch of road or a thick kerb - now I think about it, GTA 5's driving was in some ways too easy, yet when pulling off in some cars they seem to slide sideways. I find GTA 4's driving to be more realistic too - no more 50mph cornering for me!

Oh and it's kinda related to cars/driving: the infamous swing glitch. Well, maybe a glitch or maybe intentional - either way, it's one of the reasons why I was keen to reinstall the game after so many years.

By the way, I like the metallic paint in GTA 4 - does anyone else here think it looks maybe better than in GTA 5? I am using Simple ENB though, so maybe comparing to my vanilla GTA 5 install is a bit unfair.

Final comment from me, just gonna say it like I see it: Niko's still a choice piece of ass, haha! I'd happily invite him over for some teabagging tea hot coffee any time! I mean he's got great facial hair, athough with Simple ENB his face does look a bit shiny:

I see, not quite as impressive as GTA 4. Thanks for clarifying that, I now understand how ragdoll differs from Euphoria. I wonder why Euphoria wasn't fully embraced in GTA 5. Like the Parkour-style moves - they're missing from GTA 5, like climbing walls, grabbing on to things and being able to reach those hard-to-reach places.

Just to bump this up for some fresh perspective.

I just love how mechanicllly sound everything is. It's quite remarkable after 11 years the game can still feel fresh. Normally I like to try and spread things around wiuth some missions. side missions and friend hangouts in between.

I still really love the bare bones approach. It makes Niko really feel like he's a hired gun mostly partaking in vehicle thefts, botched drug deals etc.
