The GS Demo was boring and put some overworked tired GS workers to sleep for the first 20 minutes, this is an unfair basis. RDR 2 will not be boring, am I wrong? Discussion with Poll.

Based on everything you have seen and know up to this point will RDR 2 be boring?

Red Dead Redemption 2 and Rockstar as a whole are getting some very bad press lately, and it's very unfair when you look underneath it all. First let me delve into what happened for those that don't know, and the reasons for why. A bunch of game stop employees were shown a demo of Red Dead Redemption 2, and for the first twenty minutes it was "meandering" through the woods on a horse. Some employees of game stop made the comments:

“15 minutes of meandering through some woods and some plucky guitar playing,”. “Rockstar Equestrian Simulator 2K19,” and “really dry.” “almost put me to sleep”. They later said after this that the demo picked up after the first 20 minutes and an action packed gun fight bank robbery and bank robbery was shown, however everyone now focuses on the "it put me to sleep" comments. They are putting unfair comments downplaying the game based on a small demo segment aimed at a high level of tranquility in the first 20 minutes.

Another one of the game stop employees in attendance added this: “To give a little context, everyone was exhausted from the week and it’s the last thing they showed us,” “I nodded for a minute but the game is beautiful. The world looks so meticulously constructed and the demo was a flawless example of the mechanics, world, and physics the game has to offer. I didn’t play the first one and had zero excitement for the game going into it but came out stoked on getting it.” The thing is that this guy was only one of many of the employees that reacted very positively, but there were so many game stop employees in attendance that an equal amount were far too tired and gave a very negative response.

Now Red Dead Redemption 2 is getting many hate articles written with titles such as this: "Red Dead Redemption 2 put game stop employees to sleep", "Is Red Dead Redemption 2 Boring? Some Game stop Employees Think So." This is immensely unfair and possibly damaging to Rockstar. The game may very well sell less now and I am very worried about that, because some game stop employees worked overtime one week and all needed sleep, watched a video that's supposed to point to and show off the scenery and ambiance of RDR 2, and fell asleep because they were tired and most likely weren't prepared for a demo like this and expecting something more along the lines of GTA V.

TL;DR Some people were tired after a long week of work at game stop and fell asleep in an RDR 2 demo. Well you shouldn't show the demo to ungrateful employees, who are up way past their bed time, a demo of which was obviously designed to be more somber in its first half. Go watch the game-play trailer and tell me that the game will be boring. Also Rockstar knows what they are doing, they know a game such as this could be equated as boring, so they will take every measure to make sure that it is not. I truly hope Rockstar retaliates with something for this soon, or shows something that really blows peoples socks off, because I would truly hate for this to damage them. It is unfair to them, who have been working on this game for 8 years consistently with many talented people (hell probably getting little sleep at times) to bring a new level of game to all of us. The demo may very well have been boring as hell, at least for the first 20 minutes, but a short demo that was obviously aimed at showing off ambiance and mood for at least that first 20 minutes is not supposed to get your adrenaline going. It hits you in a different way, if you're not passing out from exhaustion that is. Tell me something, if a realistic representation of nature that will be represented in RDR 2 is boring ( e.x hearing flies buzzing around your head and realistic skinning animations.) Then why do so many people love it in real life,; camping, hunting, etc. You are going to get the most realism possible with all of these things, yet it is boring. Therefore, this demo and the exhausted game spot employees reaction should have no basis on how fun and exciting this game will be in my opinion.

What are your guys opinions after getting all of this information in relation to what happened during the Game Spot Demo and all of what you know? Is it just plain boring? Is it Exciting? Is it a little of both? Or maybe you feel that in RDR 2's case the boring aspects of it will be tranquil, peaceful, and beautiful in this regard so it's great, and for me all that makes it not boring? Thoughts?

I never finished the first game and hardly played it since GTA IV and the Episodes occupied my time however i will complete RDR2 story mode three times. The gameplay trailer made me pre-order straight away my first since GTA V.

You nailed it. Pretty much all the points I would mention. It actually annoyed the hell out of me when I saw all the click bait articles and pretty immature comments. R*has put so much into this it's rude as hell to act the way the people at the presentation did. I would've been thankful to see Arthur eat a f*cking sandwich I'm not even kidding lol just for perspective. But idc what they think truly, regardless though it had nothing to do with the game itself, some people just do not like or "get" westerns. They likely are the crowd there who needs explosions every second to have their attention kept. Playing cod and fortnite casual type games mainstream plays. RDR2 is a select audience and I can't thank rockstar enough for sticking to their roots for red dead, didn't make it into another GTA. It's different, unique, and mature\for adults. I woulda been in awe with that 20 min walking in forest. Yeah it can be boring no matter what any game but that's only because you're watching... When you're playing it's a whole different feeling, exploring for hours like that (which I will btw cause it's fun) and the calm scenes really make the action that much more impactful and enjoyable . I have always said and still believe to enjoy a game like red dead redemption or westerns in general, you as a person need to have a certain intelligence level\appreciation and mindset for art and nature. Part of the fun of red dead which thankfully rockstar is expanding on heavily, is experiencing the world. Listen to the NPC's, watch what they do how alive it is how they react to you and now in RDR2 don't just revolve around you... Bonding with your horse, getting to know your character\characters... just take it slowly enjoy the environment after you got in a big gun fight, interacting with the world and  picking things up which will be in RDR2 this time!! Etc

its the world we live in today, if people dont get what they expect, they will whinge, whine, and B***h about it, making damn sure everyone hears them, specially the people that dont what to listen to them.

and the MSM will grab anything they can and run with it, looking for those hits they need. its horrible to think, 10 years ago, it was so different.

I suspect more than a few Tubers and "game journalists" have an agenda.  Especially if they get paid under the table by devs who don't want the competition from Rockstar.

I don't think it's been damaging at all really. The overall reaction to those articles was bemusement in the direction of the people making those comments. Lotta people either understanding the context (slow demo, tired people) or understanding that a lot of RDR2 will be riding your horse about cause it's a cowboy game.

There's gameplay footage of RDR2 out there, people have seen it with their own eyes. They can judge it for them selves. Rockstar probably weren't overly happy with Gamestop employees talking about a private demo and they might not be so willing to take demos to their conferences in future, but it's not gonna harm the game in the long run.

I truly hope you're right Jason and do see your point. I am just concerned because I know how the media blows things out of proportion. Certain people who are more easily swayed by outside opinion take criticism seriously, you know what I mean. Then we get this vicious cycle of nonsense being blabbed around like a global game of telephone lol.

Some Fortnite loving schmucks getting bored when playing RDR2 is almost an honour for the game. I'd start to be worried if it were the other way around.

I came across this from a GameStop employee on YouTube:

"I'm an assistant manager at GameStop and my store leader said the same thing as most others, Game play looked phenomenal but it was the last day of conference and they had been up since 6am so most people were tired and it was hard to keep your eyes open when 5 minutes of the gameplay was Arthur getting out of tent, grabbing a cup of coffee, and walking around the camp"

It's pretty obvious that there were many tired employees when the demo began and they felt bored from what they saw even though the gameplay looked great. Also, I have seen many positive comments about what was shown as well but it seems like people these days publish negative articles either because of hate, bias, or clickbait.

Why is everyone so worked up over the opinions of some Gamestop employees? People actually sound insecure over the fact that a game they're hyped for was found boring by other people. People need to relax.

First of all:
People were tired during the showcase and apparently half of it was just walking around. If I wasn't closely following RDR2 to begin with and the big showcase I got was a dude just walking around, I would probably be bored during the showcase as well.

Finally:
RDR2 is not going to be for everyone. Believe it or not, a game can be critically acclaimed but still be boring for some people. There will be people who will not find it fun playing RDR2 even if it were to get a 100 on metacritic. Certain games are not for everyone. If you're not interested in racing games, the best racing games won't interest you. If you're not interested in fighting games, the best fighting games won't interest you. If you're not interested in action-adventure games like RDR/GTA, RDR/GTA won't interest you.

amen! the only opinion that matters is MINE! and I, am the only one to talk down on the game before release, based on info etc, cutting down my expectations as much as possible. benzless factor etc

my take on the presentation itself: they showed the "boring" aspects of the singleplayer campaign, and since they want to push the ONLINE BUFFALO CARD counterpart to it, they needed to show extra boring stuff. well, mission accomplished I guess!

Nailed it x2 . I said in a separate post recently that good we don't want this game to be for everybody lol there's GTA for that. RDR is a mature adult franchise set in times of no cell phones and RPG flying sh*t (thank God)! It's ironic the things people hate about the west compared to GTA, is exactly what I'm most excited for... One shot weapons with advanced mechanics, horses, saloons. Less technology, cowboys and nature no huge skyscrapers etc

Exactly. My ideal RDR2 (think an RDR with the terraforming of Minecraft and the building, hunting/taming and gathering from Ark mashup) would probably be "boring AF bro XD" to most other casual R* fans or Fortnite squeakers. I'd be happy as all hell though.

I've not been waiting for the game for 2 years only to want to read what Gamestop employees are thinking of the game, tired they were or not. Too much attention has been given to this matter and it's all vague.

Welcome to westerns...

I can't believe we are discussing this, I would also be bored after a long day with my back hurting and some guy who just can't make Arthur to run.

GameStop employees are not ignorants, neither we should be paying any attention to this.

Well maybe they are trying to use reverse psychology (Lower expectations by saying this and then when the game releases, it blows your expectations even more) :)

On a serious note, focusing on the more negative things is done by the media as they want more people to read their articles. I reckon those employees either don't like that kind of game but others will. Some people would like exploring those woods and do some hunting, some would like doing missions, etc... So the opinion of some employees doesn't really account for much.

The game will be good imo (Rockstar have delivered many great games like RDR, Bully GTA San Andreas, Vice city, IV, etc.....) so i think it would be pretty damn hard to mess this game up.

More than anything this makes me question R*s judgement when it comes to these reveal events.

Why not invite a group of RDR enthusiasts and get their opinion?

And I'll bring up once again - At one event they rolled out a Delorean.

The sensationalist headlines made by media outlets are just that, sensational. They realize the hype for this game is massive and that it’ll be certain to attract clicks both from fans of the series as well as those less interested.

In the proper context which becomes more clear when you look further than the headlines, it’s not at all surprising that people deprived of sleep and already fed to the brim with other games’ material find it difficult to stay alert while looking at Arthur riding a horse or walking around.

On the same note; I know that one of my favorite pastimes in this game series (and GTA as well, for that matter) is just that; exploring, walking around, taking it slow. That’s the magic, for me. But while saying that, there’s also a world of difference between playing that yourself, in privacy, and looking at someone else doing that. I wouldn’t find it very interesting to watch a friend go collect Prickly Pear for a survivalist challenge, but precisely those things are some of my best memories from RDR because it was me who did the exploring, who happened to come across a stranger while doing so, or was attacked by a cougar from out of nowhere.

So yeah, I’m not at all shaken by this. Quite the opposite actually - it would be so much more alarming if what they/we got to see was CoD 1899 with endless running and explosions everywhere.

Plus; I seriously like walking in these games as it adds to the immersion. I want it to look like a movie that I’m watching. Who in his right mind is running around in the wilderness? Or running from the saloon to the shop, to the brothel or to the theater? Games that don’t have proper walking, but are counting on you to always want to run everywhere.. those games are doing it wrong imho. And, as others have said, players who want that should generally stick to Fortnite, CoD or any other game that runs on Adderall and Mountain Dew.

So, yeah. I’m glad to see R* sticking to their roots. Besides, there will surely be plenty of action in this game, and all of us have the freedom to choose how much action we want. I for one prefer it if it’s sparsely spread out between more sober moments, at least for my first playthrough. When I know the game world and have ”seen it all”, then I might start running around killing everyone just to mess around. After all it is a sandbox and we’re all free to do what we want with it.

The game press want clicks, that is all. They know that these headlines create them.

Lazlow once said on his radio show, before GTA 5 came out, that one day while in the office he walked by a beta tester who had parked his car in an alley just to sit there and listen to the radio. He realized then that everyone involved with making of the game "had won."

Rockstar know what they are doing, even if some people don't "get it" or were too tired to take it in.

Red Dead Redemption can be very boring to watch at times, so this isn't anything new, there's a difference between watching someone hunt and ACTUALLY being that person fully focused doing it for example. If this Rockstar demo was showing off the ambience and stuff like hunting then yeah, the reaction can be expected.

@Ash_735 Agreed. I'd die from boredom if I had to watch myself play The Witcher 3 (lol does that make sense?), but when I'm "in the game myself, controlling it" I'm completely mesmerized by finding a golden platter for loot, or reading a diary entry. :)

This seems dumb as sh*t to me.  A controversy over nothing.  Lots of parts of RDR (which was a masterpiece, I think all of us would agree) were slow and quiet, and would not play well as a demo put in front of a group of people that were ready to go to bed after a very long day.  The demo probably should have been a little more action-y, but it's stupid that these comments were even made public given the context, because it is certainly not a meaningful impression of what the actual game experience will be like.

True.  I can't tell you how many hours I've spent crouching in the weeds in Horizon Zero Dawn, stalking turkeys and wild boar.  Similar kind of thing.  The game is very pretty but a lot of it would be dull to watch if you're not actually playing it yourself.  But when the controller is in my hand, I'm mesmerized by even the slow, quiet parts.
