Mass shooting at video game tournament in Jacksonville leaves multiple dead

(CNN)Multiple people were killed in a mass shooting during a video game tournament at a shopping and dining complex in downtown Jacksonville, Florida, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said Sunday afternoon.

Preliminary reports say four people were killed of the 11 people who were shot at the Jacksonville Landing, according to a law enforcement official briefed on the incident.
The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said on Twitter there were "multiple" fatalities and "many" transported to hospitals. One suspect was dead at the scene, the Sheriff's Office said, and it was not known if there was another suspect.
Memorial Hospital in Jacksonville, Florida is treating at least three patients that were involved in the gaming shooting incident, Hospital spokesman Pete Moberg tells CNN. All of the patients are in stable condition, Moberg says.
The shooting occurred at the Jacksonville Landing complex during aqualifying event for the Madden 19 Tournament at the GLHF Game Bar, according to the Twitter of CompLexity Gaming, one of the gaming teams.

The Landing is an open-air marketplace with stores, bars and restaurants in downtown Jacksonville along the St. Johns River.
On an online stream of the Madden event posted to the website Twitch, several loud gunshots can be heard and the game abruptly stops.
After several gunshots, people scream and one person cries out, "Oh f**, what'd he shoot me with?" The stream did not show the shooting.
The event was the Southeastern Qualifier for the Madden NFL Championship Series for Madden NFL 18, according to the bar's Facebook page.
"This is your chance to earn your spot in the first Major's Live Finals happening in October 2018. Don't hesitate to secure your spot," the post read in part.

Ryan Alemon, who came from Texas to participate in the gaming tournament, said he ducked down and ran toward the restroom when he heard the gunshots. He stayed there for about 10 minutes and then ran from the scene.
"I'm still shocked, I can hardly talk," he said.
The sheriff's office said many people found places to hide when the shooting started.
"We are finding many people hiding in locked areas at The Landing," the sheriff's office tweeted. "We ask you to stay calm, stay where you are hiding. SWAT is doing a methodical search inside The Landing. We will get to you. Please don't come running out."

Malik Brunson said he was at a nearby Hooters restaurant when the shooting occurred.
"All I heard was he got a gun and the shooting started. One of the man ran into Hooters with the shot wounds, they locked us in the restaurant," he said in a social media message.
CompLexity Gaming Founder and CEO Jason Lake said one of their gamers, a 19-year-old who goes by Drini, was shot in the thumb but is going to be fine.
"He managed to escape and run down the street to a nearby gym. He's currently cooperating with the authorities and we will be flying him out of Jacksonville as soon as we are given the green light from the officials on the ground," Lake said.
President Donald Trump has been briefed on the situation, White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said.
Federal law enforcement officials are monitoring the situation in Jacksonville. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) is responding to the scene in Jacksonville Landing, a law enforcement source told CNN.

Any word on a motive?  Rage quitting taken to the extreme?

Oddly enough I've been watching HLN for most of the day as they air crime shows on Sundays and this was only mentioned in passing as if it was a shooting between two friends.

First thing I though of when I heard this happened at a tourny was this is probably a disgruntled player who either didn't make the cut or go booted from the tourney for one reason or another.

I feel bad for Drini. One of the worst things that could happen to a gamer is losing a finger.

At a news conference Sunday night, Duval County Sheriff Mike Williams of the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office identified the shooter as David Katz, 24, of Baltimore. Williams said Katz was at the tournament as a competitor. He said Katz shot himself.

Three were killed in the shooting (including Katz) and another nine were treated for gunshot wounds at local hospitals. All surviving gunshot victims are in stable condition, Williams said. He said the sheriff’s office was still working to confirm the identities of the deceased.

Apparently he had lost to the guy seen in the red hoodie in the footage from the broadcast. If you look closely, you can see a laser sight taking aim on his chest just before the video feed fades.

The shooter was a f*cking sore loser coward. People were there to have fun and be competitive and he just sh*ts all over it.

You know society is f*cked when it's gotten to the point where you can't even go to a gaming tournament without fear of being shot. This sh*t is getting out of control.

Wait, so let me get this straight, the shooter was a part of the tournament himself? What the f*ck. What f*cking sick sore loser brings a gun to an event from the get go, like "in case they lose" or some sh*t?

This is horrendous.

I'm surprised how easy it is to conceal a weapon at public events in America.   Considering America has insane gun laws that vary from state to state.   I/You would think security at these events would be on par with airport security.

I can't imagine my own child telling me he's going out to play video games and then get a call later on in the day telling me he's been shot dead. It's getting to the point where nowhere in America is safe. Nobody should have to live in this much fear.

Serious condolences to the families of those affected by the shooting and may they find comfort.

This is what happens when you have no support for mental illness across a whole nation. Piece of sh*t dude was more than a sore loser. Disgraceful.

This is horrendous.

That's my concern. He brought the weapon with him and so had intent from the outset to use it.

It's like those sporting matches that end in a riot. If a team loses the fans riot and rampage... if their team wins... they still rampage and destroy property, but this time cheering about how their team won.

So truthfully, they just wanted to destroy property and cause chaos. The sporting match is simply their excuse for their deplorable behaviour.

My prayers goes out to the family that lost their family members during this attack due to a sore loser. :(

This has been getting too close to home for me with recent shootings over the past few years. I have never before seen so many events like this. Just sad in general, among other things. It has come to this point these days thinking also that one can't even go anywhere without something like this happening. That's all I'm going to say in regards to what has already been said.

This isn't because he was a 'sore loser'.

Being a 'sore loser' would be storming out of the tournament in a fit of rage.

This guy is a f*cking maniac.

So I don't catch up with sports and stuff, I thought the mass shooting happened in a stadium.... And turned out It's a video game match????

lmao no it's not.

You don't just decide to shoot up a tournament because you lost a game.

That's rediculous.

There's something else up with it. He has to have some issues OTHER than beinf beaten at a f*cking game.

By that logic of him just being a 'bad loser' all of us gamers would be mass shooters.

CNN is on all weekend in my house.  I was watching when this event broke.

Scary how any mass shooting in the past would get extensive coverage but this one was just get mentioned in between John McCain tributes and such.

First off there is nothing to be thankful for any mass shooting but in a way I'm glad it wasn't a shooter being played at the tournament.

So sad to hear. Is nowhere safe?

Apparently the security at the event was appalling, which surprises me considering the high profile shootings Florida has had in the last couple of years. Thought it would be a lot tighter.

There are two kinds of loser:

One: having to lose something competitively.

Two: a type of an attitude.

He's number two. Obviously when people here call him a loser it's not because of him losing the game but more about his attitude. And in this case, in an acute stage.

People were there just to play a game, have fun and forget about the worries of life.

Its just a tournament, you lose this year, there is always next year!! instead, Whoever the man was, took it out on those poor Kids!!

Prayers and thoughts don't do anything.. The US government needs to do something soon!!! This sh*t has gone long enough!

The more easily the law allows the psychopaths to buy fireweapons the more numerous they are to purchase them and use them to murder innocent people. The more the politicians who vote these laws can hope to receive a high electoral financing and bribes/commissions the less the system is likely to change but I'm sure the NRA supporters won't have any trouble to prove us all what I write I totally irrelevant.

All my condolences to the victims' relatives. I hope they'll overcome their traumatism fastly.

Ive been too a few gaming tourneys in the DC area where big ass brawls broke out afterwards. specially at the madden tourneys. Some Tourneys are at Bars and they let the players drink, which fuels the rage.  Sucks what happened to these guys

Gun control is a must, fast! However, not only that, Mental Health is also something that can't be overlooked.
Unless those two things change we will continue to see tragedies like this happen.

I have been really close to a shooting once and I can tell, it's horrifying. The sounds, everything...

The only thought that comes to your mind is: "I'm gonna die." In those moments you never really know what to do so the odds you'll freeze and not react... Urgh.

My condolences to the families and everyone that had the horror to witness such a terrible thing.
Including those who were watching on Twitch not knowing what was going on.

It wouldn't surprise me to find out that this man had mental and emotional issues all his life.

Although it is a small percentage over all, the toxic areas of the gaming community seem to have a large voice. It's bad enough that you can't just hop on and play without some 10 year old cussing you out and talking about what he did with your momma because you outplayed him, now we have the over all threat of people bringing guns to tournaments. Seriously, why did he feel the need to bring a gun to a gaming tournament in the first place?

Part of me wants to think that the increased competitiveness of "e-sports" is part of the recipe of what had happened, but then I think about all the real sports and tournaments that take place throughout the world every day and how no one goes shooting up a casino if they lose a poker tournament or a football player shooting up a stadium because his team lost the game. In the end, we can only speculate, pray for those involved in this tragedy and pray that we never have to face such a situation.
