I have read that some patches (upgrades or downgrades) may result in missing fonts. Here is a Steam discussion (your solution may depend on whether you run the boxed/DVD version or digital download/Steam). I run v1.0.4.0 having upgraded from a clean install (v1.0) of the boxed version, and I have no problems. But every install seems to be different - getting this game to run was and still is a painful experience. Good luck!
