Favourite Music Interviews

Recommended Posts

The Hippie

Was up watching music interviews and videos of some of my favourite artists last night and thought it'd be a good topic. So post some of your favourite artists when they aren't performing.

I have two distinct types of interviews I like - there's the one which devotes the time to talking about composition and how a project is made, and then there's the ones where either the musician or host is being a complete goof and having a good time with it. I find the latter slightly more entertaining because if it's done right, I gain a little more respect for both parties. They show willing and they don't take themselves super cereal. It humanises them and it makes me like them more as a person. They don't appear so up their own arse, and it's generally a good watch. On the opposite side, I can't stand those interviews which are essentially ego stroking matches, seeing who can get an erection the quickest. I do find that there's a fine line - if you let a musician waffle for too long, they might start to fawn over things a bit and you get this smug vibe. I know that's going to happen regardless of area or passion but you can just tell if somebody is genuinely enjoying talking about their music, or whether they're just showing off.

Anyway, now I'm waffling. Here's a good example of the first one:

I'm not usually a fan of interviews conducted by kids. Don't ask me why, but maybe I'm just a cynical grapefuit. Here though, Buzz seems keen to show his collection and seems genuinely interested in interacting with the kid. He isn't patronising, he's engaging and he is informative. I can rattle of a dozen musicians who wouldn't be seen dead with this kid. They'd see it as a massive waste of their time. Not our King Buzzo, oh no, he's more than happy to share.

Troll interviews though? I like this one.

Venetian Snares is one of my favourite musicians, and this just made me like him even more. He does his fair share of piss taking, but it isn't particularly at anybody's expense but his own. They're both just having a laugh. Nobody's being bruised and nothing feels awkward. The interviewer clearly knows what kind of character he is and they play off each other really well.

Man I love Lou Reed,  just so subtly cool. In a way I feel like I can relate to him after seeing that interview. And damn never heard of GG Allin before, that guy is something else living in a different era or even another planet haha, crazy!

And about those two types of interviews, I'm definitely more interested in the laid back casual type where it's not so formal. I think you get a better idea of who a person truly is. It's like that 2nd video I posted where Chris Cornell is too damn sarcastic for that interviewer who doesn't seem to get his humour, I love it.

Loved that Neil Young interview. I remember seeing that not too long ago.

I used to have these on VHS when I was a teenager. This is where Morrison "predicts" the future of music when he envisions of new music by one person using electronics and tapes, singing, speaking and using machines.

And this is a deleted scenes interview for a Reason/Propellerhead promo. Lots of cool music trivia here.. How AdRock bought an 808 instead of a Richenbacher guitar, that was the start of them making beats and moving from Punk music , how he discovered LL Cool J and how they used to make "pause tapes" and "tape loops" when they sampled beats, although nobody called it sampling back then because the term didn't really exist in that context. Although sampling was first used in relation to music in case against the Beastie Boys. Funny that. He also talks about how Fight For Your Right was kind a joke that backfired. It was a satire about knucklehead dude-bros and then those knucklehead dude-bros started coming to their shows, lol.

Kraftwerk rarely give interviews.. and when they do, sometimes its their robots they send instead.. but this interview is hilarious. He makes it so hard for her. It's cringey as f*ck. Don't be put off about the Portuguese, she asks the questions in English...

Love Kanye West or hate him you can't truthfully say his music is terrible. He's made a huge ripple in hip-hop ever since the formation of his long career, gaining many accolades other artists really dream of.

Either way, the consensus is that My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is his Magnum Opus and the Illmatic of this generation. It has been the single-handedly most influential album in hip-hop of the 2010s and even has been cited as one of the best music records of all time. It is my personal favourite hip-hop record of all time.

My favourite music interview of all time is the interview with Jay Leno after the MTV award incident with Taylor Swift (an event that played a significant role in inspiring the album). You can clearly see Kanye is at his most vulnerable and not as egotistical as he usually is. This is really the most human Kanye has ever been even surpassing the College Dropout days. On the other hand, it really exposes Jay Leno and the media as huge douchebags for really not letting him live his mistakes down. They even go for cheap shots with his mother who died two years prior to the 2009 MTV awards event.
