Gang Territory changes between GTA IV/EFLC & GTA CTW

Recommended Posts

while doing some research, I noticed that the gang zones have changed between GTA IV/EFLC (Set in 2008) and GTA CTW (Set in 2009).

This thread is a means to document those changes.

GTA IV/EFLC Gang Turf Map: Here

CTW Gang Turf Map: Here

Things that stayed the same

- The African American Gangs still controls North Holland (Holland Hustlers) & Firefly Projects (M.O.B)

- The Jamaicans still control Schottler & part of Beechwood City

- The Irish Mob still controls Steinway

The changes are as follows

- Midtown Gangsters (Korean Mafia) have taken control of a decent sized chunk of Eastern Bohan (Northern Gardens, Little Bay, and part of Industrial)

- The Triads have expanded into The Exchange, part of the Fishmarket South and the far east most side of Lower Easton. They also seem to have taken control of Cerveza Heights & East Island City

- The Italian Mafia has taken up Suffolk as well as City Hall and the west side of Lower Easton

- The Russian Mafia seems to have lost control of Firefly Island & Beachgate (might be in reference to Dimitri's death at the end of GTA IV)

- Angels of Death now control Willis instead of BOABO

- Spanish Lords still control South Bohan & East Holland but seem to have lost Cerveza Heights

- Albanian Mob no longer exists as a gang

Speculative information/unconfirmed

- The Lost MC still functions as a biker gang with an unknown Turf location as seen in a few CTW misions

Some of the changes you mentioned are directly influenced by player's actions in GTA IV, which nicely shows how the city changes in terms of crime.

- Albanian mob was basically destroyed in GTA IV as Niko first killed Dardan Petrela and his crew and later destroyed them completely on the funeral of one of the McReary brothers. Albanian's territory in Bohan (mostly Little Bay and Industrial) was taken over by Korean Mob.

- Lost MC exists after events of GTA IV, but due to destruction of the clubhouse they are disorganised. Groups depicted in CTW are very likely leftovers from the gang that didn't want to stop their biker life.

- Destruction of the Russian Bratva, due to deaths of Faustin, Rascalov and finally Bulgarin allowed asian gangs (Korean Mob and Triads) increase their influence.

I am playing through GTA 4 after an almost 8-year hiatus, and I did not progress much at all the first time around. So, to what extent do gangs actually affect what happens in-game? I've seen police officers arrest criminals, I've seen a few car crashes, and I've even heard some gun shots - but do gangs actually have shoot-outs? Liberty City is sold as a pretty grim, criminal under-world but so far it seems quite docile. I've just spared Ivan, that's my progress by the way.

They don't do anything gang related or productive, just walk. They're quite soulless like the rest of the pedestrians.

Soulless? Are we talking about the same pedestrians? Pedestrians in GTA IV are well made, they react to the weather, the traffic and the environment in general... Honestly I've never seen a city so alive in a videogame, and we're talking about a game that was launched more than 10 years ago! Gangs don't do anything? Now I don't want to make spoilers for @GiveMeLiberty78, but gangs play a huge role in the story of GTA IV and its DLCs, in TLaD we're playing inside a Motorcycle Club!

If we have to talk about pedestrians in the GTA Franchise, we could only compare the ones we see in GTA V and GTA IV, regarding this topic the 3D-Era titles can't compete at all, unless you like to see a pedestrian on top of your car after have runned him over.

Oh OK, so a bit inactive compared to what we might expect from real-world gangsters? I remember GTA:SA having a focus on gang wars and fighting in waves - a bit contrived but good fun.

Yeah, I think the pedestrians are generally quite responsive - they definitely make Liberty City feel more authentic. Oh and thank you for your consideration about spoilers - kudos! But I come here expecting there to be some potential spoilers here and there - after all, the game is now 10 years old and I guess some spoilers are inevitable in an open forum. Oh and I never bought TLaD and EFLC so I can't comment on them, but I look forward to seeing where GTA 4 goes.

Also, GTA 3 was hell - eventually, you ended up pissing off the Triads, the Mafia, the Yardies, the Yakuza, the Colombian Cartel (who I think hated you from the start unless I'm mistaken?), and possibly the Southside Hoods. I couldn't drive anywhere near the Italian quarter because a few quick shotgun blasts would result in instant death. And unlike GTA 2, I don't think you could earn a gang's respect. At least I can walk around parts of Liberty City without being completely shafted, haha!

GTA 3 was a mess at a certain point... And the first time I attempted for 100% I did all the storyline missions first and then the side missions like I always do with other games. Well, it has been a challenge completing all the rampages and all the other stuff, for the Paramedic mission I had to glitch the ambulance and make it damageproof ;)

Do you do anything but complain? If you don't like IV, don't associate with it, ergo stop looking at threads where we discuss GTA IV then posting just to stir the pot.

@The two guys above me

GTA 3 in certain areas was impossible to navigate. IIRC the Leone Mafia had shotguns and well, as you know up close GTA 3 shotguns blow up cars quite easily. I quite prefer the sedated gang members in the city. You'll still get a response from multiple dudes if you cause trouble in a gang-ed up area but other than that they're quite tame. I'd rather be able to navigate the city then be shot at constantly.

The Leone Mafia had shotguns that could instantly blow up a car in only 2 shots! You could drive in the middle of the streets, but it didn't make a difference: the range of fire of weapons in GTA 3 was very approximate...

After have completed the main storyline (with all the "telephone missions") you had to deal with:

- Portland: Leone Mafia, Chinese Triads, Diablos

- Staunton Island: Colombian Cartel, Yardies

- Shoreside Vale: Colombian Cartel

In GTA IV you can encounter gangs only during missions (in TLaD there are "Gang Wars" and in TBoGT there are "Drug Wars" too), in freemode was basically impossible to be attacked by a NPC... And this aspect of the game, at least for me, made the city more realistic, Liberty City is based on NY and in NY I don't think you'll ever find a gang attacking a person (are weapons illegal in the NY state, right?).

In GTA V I liked how Rockstar managed the local gangs. Do you enter in a gang territory? Ok, no problem. Do you start shooting in a gang territory? Ok, the gang starts shooting you.

Back on main topic...

I've never played Chinatown Wars, but if gangs' territories changed I think it's only because of the map that has CW. The Liberty City of CW has lost a main island (Alderney) and the other 2 main islands were re-built for making them smaller, so the game could fit into a DS card. Another possible explanation could be that in 1 year gangs had done lots of wars, but the borders changed too much... But is GTA CW set in the 3D-Era or in the HD-Era? Or is it set in a sort of Top-Down-Era like GTA Advance and the firsts GTAs?

Good question. I've not really considered that until now, but GTA's different timelines/eras are a bit of a mindf*ck for me! My guess is that GTA CW would follow the Top-Down Era (I like the capital letters by the way, kinda feels like we're talking about a famous Epoch or a Dynasty).

Bad choice, no? Ha! I remember back in the day (cue harp music) when 100% mattered a lot. I still aim for 100% but at a much more liberal pace. I used to complete the side missions for the bonuses like added health and bribes and stuff.

To me, it felt like a good 75% of the map was basically a 'no-go' zone. I had more luck flying the Dodo than crossing the Italian quarter, and flying that crock of sh*t was a problem that not even cheats could solve!

Back to GTA 4, I wonder if a mod similar to the fantastic GTA 5 Lively World and World of Variety mods could add more variation and action to Liberty City. Without Lively World at least, I found Los Santos and Blaine County to be rather boring, a lot of detail and good things for sure, but I guess I'd seen/done everything there was to see/do. Lively World and World of Variety add more scope for NPC events and random sightings. They've been developed massively and refined over time for better variation, performance and more realism.

GTA CTW is a direct sequel to GTA IV. It's in the HD Universe.

Really? Are in CW any people who had a role in GTA IV? I've never played CW, but I always thought it wasn't set in the HD-Era. And GTA Advance in which era is set? Top-Down-Era or 3D-Era?

Those 2 are the only GTAs I've never played, so I don't know anything about them!

Well, my first ever GTA was GTA IV, so when I played GTA 3 I didn't know about all the bonuses I could get thanks to the side missions... And also I didn't know about the gangs attacking you even after the last mission!

Then in GTA VC and in GTA SA I didn't do the same mistake 😄

Oh right, OK. I forget that I'm a bit of a dinosaur in the GTA world, maybe. I was also definitely the kind of "geeky PC" player who even bought the strategy guides (boy those were the days!). But hey, at least you changed your strategy and did the right thing in VC and SA. I enjoyed the different schools in GTA SA, I wish GTA 4 had, say, a land-based school. Probably map is too small/not suited really for a flying school though.

Ah, that I did not know, thanks. If it don't have a mouse and keyboard, I won't play it. Even way back when everybody I knew owned the PS2 and PS3, I always was the outcast who waited for the PC release. Totally worth it though, I reckon.

Well, not really, though most CTW main characters are mentioned on the GTA IV Police Database. Besides, the map is nearly the same, lol.

GTA Advance is in the 3D Era, it's a prequel to GTA3 set in 2000. Characters like King Courtney and Asuka Kasen reappear together with new ones like Vinnie or Jonnie. It focuses on Mike, who tries to leave Liberty City but over the course of the 40-or so missions he finds much trouble trying to leave town.

Oh ok, thanks! At least now I know something about these 2 GTAs that I've never played... I'm not a fan of mobile consoles, I had hard times with LCS and VCS on PSP and I didn't want to play a top down game on a tiny screen.

Anyway I think that CW could have 3D graphics on PSP just like VCS and LCS (there's also a mod for PSP I think), probably the fact that the game was build for DS didn't help.

They're worth giving a try. I started with GTA IV but I played all GTA games except for V and I can freely say that each GTA has it's good and bad sides. The only GTA that stuck out to me is LCS because of the story, but otherwise I respect and appreciate all GTA games in a way.

Maybe one day I'll play CW, from what I saw it's seems to be the "best" playable GTA on a smartphone... Or I could also try to revive my old PSP :)

GTA Advance is basically impossible to play in a legal way now, I never had a Game Boy Advance and, even if I have one, it would be very hard to find its card. I could use an emulator, but then I'd have to download an illegal ROM, which is a thing I don't want to do... Well, I'm sure that the guys of GTASeriesVideos had uploaded a complete walkthrough of GTA Advance a few years ago, probably this will be my "platform" 😁
