In 1899, as the Van Der Linde gang trek the untamed west, a very familiar face was charting the lands.  His name was Theodore Roosevelt, the future president of the United States, and his son was Kermit, who nobody really remembers.

PQVOXYl.jpg

As depicted in the above proof, Arthur Morgan appears be SAVING the president's life. However, if choices are implemented into RDR2 gameplay, as I predict they will, this can only suggest that Arthur is REVERSING THE FATE of American history.  That being said, I believe Rockstar is "going back to it's roots" with this one. Because if the president is killed, this will only amount to one thing.  Time bandits. Criminals with the sole purpose of disrupting the past to change future events, unconcerned with the dire repercussions. And what is also true if time bandits exist? The T.C.A (Time Correctors Agency),  the domestic intelligence and security agency lead by the United States government that vows to enforce and protect pre-existing timelines. My guess is... whatever the circumstances are with Roosevelt... Arthur is, in some way, going to be involved. At least that's my theory.

If this is not a choice and is part of a mission or somesuch, then I think it's meant to be Ted. However, if it's a choice it's probably just a reference to the beartrap event you mention.

Either way, I doubt this is a coincidence, since they guy looks like him and the event shown matches the story you mentioned.

"Teddy Bear" came about because TR refused to shoot a bear that was tied to a tree.  He never stepped in a bear trap.

I'd like to see him in the game. During his trips out west, he met a few legends like Bat Masterson and was close friends with Seth Bullock of Deadwood fame. Bullock idolized him.

They could toss in a few Rough Riders since this game takes place 1 year after San Juan Hill but who knows.

If you don't save Theodore Roosevelt in 1899, the US by 2018 in the Red Dead universe will be ruled under the iron fist of Supreme Leader George Bush III.

I really hope it is. I always wanted some real life figures to connect the game more with America's past. Along with stuff like old Civil War ballads being sung around campfires, just to give the world a sense of history. It's a shame the game isn't set even earlier, because I'd have loved to see figures like Jefferson Davis or Ulysses S. Grant pop up.

Still, old Teddy was a really unique figure in American history. A very brave man, and one of those few politicians who tried to stand up to big business, but also something of a mercenary and glory-hound, who would have went off fighting in World War I if he'd been allowed.

Good catch, OP - yeah, probably not Roosevelt in actual name, but that sure does look like him. And like with how Dutch's gang and the train robbery synch up to the similar job pulled by Butch Cassidy's Wild Bunch in 1899, I'm getting the feeling they're going to do quite a few nods and parallels to real-world history.

Wonder how they're going to play it - either a differentlynamed analogue, like how you've got "Jay Norris" as LifeInvader's equivalent to Mark Zuckerberg, or maybe Arthur will rescue some dude, and before they part company, he'll be all "what's your name, stranger?", and the guy'll reply "oh, just call me Ted..."  ;)

I'd say that guest cameos by historical figures is usually stock in trade for Assassin's Creed, not Rockstar; but.

DEFINITELY looks like Teddy, and DEFINITELY fits the bear trap legend.  (Arthur saves Teddy's life....whodathunkit)

Not only that, but I'm pretty sure I've spotted more celeb appearances.   Check this out:

*There's a place on the Lannahechee River called "Clemens Cove."   The most famous riverboat pilot of all was a guy named Sam Clemens, aka Mark Twain.  Coincidence?

B6vOAOs.jpg

*How about this.

Sarah Bernhardt was one of the most famous stage actresses of the late 19th century.  In 1906, she traveled all over the West in a farewell tour, performing some of her most famous roles.   Did Arthur Morgan meet her once?

Y3AsSkT.jpg8k6IXM4.jpg

*Then there's this guy, who bears an uncanny resemblance to Nikola Tesla (minus the goatee).   Who would have been in America at this time.  Who also would have invented that there very oscillator IRL at around this time.

hnSXspV.jpgBb7IZey.jpg

*Then there's the case of Carleton Watkins, one of America's premier landscape photographers, who lensed some of the most daring and most famous photos of the grandeur of the American West around this time.   This guy, or no?

LjkGo7P.jpgPxpYySc.jpg

Then there's this wounded veteran Confederate artillery officer in Rhodes....who might he have been?

k2WKCSR.jpg

...and what about this old gunslinger...?   He just LOOKS like a legend.

Kl8kMII.jpg

I think this game is going to feature a who's who of real life characters of the Wild West.   And, like a Western version of Forrest Gump, Arthur gets to meet every single one of them.

Red Dead has always been more inclined to base itself on complete reality rather than a fictional one, proven through it's use of real places and events. So it wouldn't surprise me if we were to see the writers more allusive to iconic figures, I'm doubtful anyone will be flat out named but more of a metaphorical wink.

The teddy bear come from a bear hunt in the mississippi delta. Not colorado. The voice in the clip does not sound anything like teddy either.

Damn, I really love this things, if this is true, I'm going to be replaying the story over and over.

By the way I just hope we can see "The Stranger" from "I know you" once again and know who the heck is: Death, God or the Devil... He was my fav secondary character

Spoiler

but maybe that means that Arthur is going to die 😢

I think it will be a rockstar world version of real life people. Characters who draw elements from real figures but skewed in a Rockstar way.

Also check the cigarette cards from the collectors edition. There is a Roosevelt esq person on one of the cards with a dog.

I find this pretty interesting, I'd like to see allusions to historical figures at least (like a R* parody version) if not the actual named person. But about Roosevelt, I have not been able to find a source for this bear trap incident with him. All I've ever heard and can find is that he refused to shoot a bear that was basically captive on a hunt. Where did you find this story?

I would really like to encounter historical figures in the game! Who else have we got? Seth Bullock, Annie Oakley, Buffalo Bill, Butch Cassidy, Geronimo, Pat Garrett?

I would vote for Bass Reeves.

Of all the legendary lawmen, he may have been the best of the bunch, he just hasn't gotten his due. It's senseless that he hasn't gotten his movie bio like the others, they wouldn't ever have to embellish the story, just tell it like it was. The number of arrests and kills speaks for itself.

And I ain't the only one on this tangent, I believe there was also an episode of Justified where they said pretty much the same thing.

Of course some of the characters, if not the majority, will be inspired by real ones. They did their research to find what kind of people lived during that time, noting down their lifestyle, activities and hobbies. And surely they came across some of the prominent names and decided to made 'familiar' copies of them.

Yeah, these characters may not be identified by their real names, but modeled after real people....could be issues with libel from the family estates, etc., I dunno.   But I don't think the resemblance to these historical figures is coincidental at all.   It's something new for Rockstar, who usually don't go the Assassin's Creed route; but maybe they realize there's some mileage and fun to be had with interacting with at least quasi-historical legends of the West.   Personally, I hope there's plenty of these types of cameos in the game.

Might have found something about the confederate veteran. He strongly resembles Civil War author and historian Shelby Foote. This is the same man who was famous for the Ken Burn's civil war documentary. Just look at how much they actually favor! There is just no doubt.

Swear to god I was thinking the same thing.  The resemblance is uncanny.  Sure, Shelby has long since joined the Choir Invisible, but he always had a great narrator's presence in Burns' seminal visual history of the war.  Kudos if that's Rockstar's salute to the man.

Pretty sure we also already know the general's name... Brigadier General Sherman M. Rhodes, namesake of the town.  That's probably his bronze statue in the town center.

"Rhodes' Gold" also features in an RDR1 treasure hunt.  According to campfire tales, a "gang of bandits" buried the gold at Hanging Rock near Armadillo....maybe Dutch's Gang did the deed unbeknownst to John Marston after 1906, then he ironically dug it up in 1911 during RDR1.  Karma sutra.

Not only is the resemblance incredible between Mr. Foote and the old soldier but Foote's background with the civil war (his 3 volume series and the Burns brothers documentary) just support this even more. Even more, whats on the coat sleeves matches that of confederate calvery; Foote's great grandfather was a cavalry commander at the battle of Shiloh. I absolutely believe this is a nod towards him. First easter egg confirmed.

It does look like him but I doubt the then governor of New York would have been ponsing about in the American frontier getting his leg caught in traps and having to be rescued by escaped convicts.

That’s the cool thing about Rockstar. Real life depicted characters are just living in Rockstars world. We could see a nod to CJ or Tommy Vercetti or god damn Seth for all we know. Or even the grave of Abraham Lincoln. It doesnt HAVE to make sense, but they make it work.

"Well actually..."

Teddy was famous for doing that. A lot. He was an outdoorsman, first and foremost, and spent more time roaming the West than sitting behind a desk in the White House, governor's office, or military headquarters.

I think this a caricature of him before he became famous. He spent a lot of  time alone in N. Dakota after he lost his wife (and mother on the same day)
