[MP] Blockbuster

What should come next?

9 members have voted

  1. 1. Seeing how Blockbuster has been receive i feel i'm ready for a proper storyline. I have two ideas in mind. Which one would you like to see first?

    • An Expendables-like action storyline
    • A F.E.A.R. and RTCW inspired horror/action storyline following the events of my MOTW #121 entry
    • Neither of the two are inspiring. Wait 'till you have other, better ideas

Welcome to BLOCKBUSTER, a gameplay-focused DYOM mission pack parodying various action movies' and videogames' cliches and stereotypes!

You play as Sloan Burt, a big action movie star, playing in various action movies, ranging from generic teen movies featuring evil corporations and cringy love stories to dramatic war movies narrating the heroic actions of our troops kickin' some poorly equipped, badly trained middle eastern army's ass!

IN THEATERS NOW:

Spoiler

Prepare for a testosterone and explosion filled action packed action movie with lots of action in which a retired secret agent must get back on duty to stop an evil mad scientist, who wants to rule the world because he's evil, and save America!

IN THEATERS NOW:

Spoiler

WuR0Ixt.jpg

A dramatic war story narrating the stories of the backbone of our military effort abroad: drone pilots marines. Get ready to weep for the death of that one useless character (that one you predicted the moment he mentioned his wife and kids back home) and to not give a sh*t about the hundreds of civilians killed by the spectacular explosions because f*ck 'em!

IN THEATERS NOW:

Spoiler

In a dystopic world, a TotallyEvil Corp, a totally evil corporation (who would have thought?) is on the verge of taking control of the entire internet and the world. Only three things are standing in its way: an annoying teen protagonist, his dumb and predictable love interest and a ton of GTA SA characters' cameos. Will Thomas, our protagonist, manage to inspire the people to rebel,  fight and save the world through the power of love?

IN THEATERS NOW:

Spoiler

An army experiment unleashes a zombie horde in a desert town (because reasons). Most of the habitants get eaten by the walkers and if that wasn't bad enough, the army rolls in and wants to kill everybody because government is BAAAAAAD! The survivors depend on the town's sheriff who must lead them to safety and fortunately has watched a lot of zombie movies so he's prepared for the occasion.

COMING SOON:

Spoiler

COVER MISSING

An elite fighter squadron composed by young and arrogant pilots is sent on a dangerous mission in some godforsaken small country to stop the leader of a russian ultranationalist movement from meeting an arms dealer. Buy sunglasses.

Mic check, 1.. 2, is it working?

0/10 needs more explosions and a female Damsel in distress. Also there is a typo, it says that it is directed by "VikingEVM", that's a weird way of spelling "Michael Bay".

EDIT: NVM we rate it 10/10 now. This rating is sponsored by Design Your Own Missions Pictures.

Don't forget to make people think the 7th sequel is the finale, and then do 5 more sequels while the cash is still flowing.

I'm not gonna write a full review until the third movie comes out but I will say: this mission pack is a breath of fresh air between the smog that is the DYOM mission showroom right now. I really enjoyed the first two missions. Duty Calls not having any kind of Arabian battle music is a wasted opportunity though. I fixed that by opening YouTube in the background however. Looking forward to what comes next. 👍

Thanks for playing the missions and taking the time to write down your opinion ☺️

I was thinking about adding music to Duty Calls when i made it but i ended up not doing it because, since the mission has 2-3 different moments with different moods, i should've used 2-3 different musics and unfortunately you can have only one music playing throughout multiple objectives :[

First of all, thank you guys for your ratings and interest 🤗

After i finish the fourth mission i might slow down Blockbuster for a bit as i feel ready to start a mission pack with a real story keeping it together rather than a set of disjointed missions.
I added the two ideas that came into my mind for a storyline, i'd be happy if you could vote the one that inspires you the most or, if you don't find any of the two particularly inspiring, the third option.

Review: Fighting cliché with cliché.

The entertainment world is filled with unoriginal and recycled plot lines. This problem has also been present in our own community from it's very start back in 2009. DYOM has an overwhelming number of cliché plots and a lack of originality. With each mission-pack almost always having a lone rambo type to takes on an army all by himself or an evil fascist who does evil because "good is dumb!". The latter is something even I am guilty of. *cough* Carl Pierce *cough*.  After reading this, one would expect that I am going to say Blockbuster by VikingEVM takes another direction and sets unprecedented standards for DYOM by featuring a unique never before seen story with compelling and memorable characters... Nope.

Blockbuster features several loosely connected missions (or movies) which feature common stories with generally the same twists we have all seen before. This a mission-pack that likes to have fun with it's characters and isn't willing to take itself seriously. This isn't the perfect mission-pack and it is not afraid to admit that. With Blockbuster, VikingEVM is making a statement. Utilizing humor and satire to make the player think about the story they are playing. How many times have you seen this before? How many times will you go see a Michael Bay movie despite being almost certain of how it ends? Blockbuster even makes me think as designer, how original are the stories that I write? Are my stories really fresh and unique? The answer to those questions is simply Nope. Blockbuster is a hidden wake up call dressed up in a funny and entertaining bundle of loose plots based on the most common cliché and tropes present in modern entertainment.

In the world within Blockbuster, the movie star Sloan Burt and the various directors he works with, are all aware of how unoriginal and cheap their stories are. Yet they still decide to go ahead and film the movie. This is the same thing we designers do every time we start up GTA SA. In a time where we're so quick to get downloads and likes, we don't stop to think whether this idea in our head is actually 'good'. They may be enjoyable but who even remembers the names of the characters from Jimmy Leppard's missions? They aren't memorable.

Yet with all this in mind, in an example of textbook irony, Blockbuster itself is original. Parody missions are not new but none of them have turned out to be real quality and entertaining missions. Each 'movie' within Blockbusters give you a new setting and atmosphere which makes it as diverse as they come. Despite being a joke, there is a plot here, there is a goal. This isn't just a joke, this is a real mission-pack. And it is one that precedes genres and is a must play for all designers, old and new.

Sorry for the late reply, but i didn't want to just write down a "Thanks man" as it would've been an insult to the time you took to play and give an in-depth review and analysis of my MP.

What made me really happy, aside from receiving Your Seal of Approval, was that you pulled out a thorough reflection from just 3 missions i made, which means you played them carefully and paid attention to every dialogue, and personally that's the best thing for a content creator (i am also a machinimaker, i left the italian GTA SA machinima community because yeah people come and drop a like but you see few comments and the few that you see are all the same "good movie" "nice movie" and it's annoying as f*ck, so i joined the english ArmA 3 machinima community and found something different: people were actually paying more attention to my stuff, some even noticing and pointing out certain choices i made or saying "I want to see more", which is better than receiving lots of acutally meaningless likes).

This Mission Pack was actually supposed to "test the ground" for future content, like proper storylines, and also make fun of movies and quoting some (Spaceballs, Rogue One, i even quoted some songs), i never thought about actually delivering a message, but i think that, unknowingly, every work we create, whether it is a Mission Pack or a GTA SA movie has some sort of message or meaning in it, if one takes a good, hard look.

And that is exactly what you did 😇

Edited by VikingEVM
Omitted the review because it's in the message above so it would be a useless repetition
