Mister Pink
Ozark for me had been one of the greatest and underrated TV shows I have watched in a while. If you haven't watched it's about a straight-edge, married, white collar, financial consultant. He ends up allowing himself get into the money laundering racket for a large Mexican cartel which inevitably goes tits-up for him (technically through no fault of his own). The show draws comparisons to Breaking Bad which is kind of unfair in my opinion and doesn't do Ozark justice because I think Ozark is just a little more multi-dimensional than BB. I think the writing is richer, characters are more layered. Cinematically, it's miles ahead of BB. The cinematography and production value is really high-end. I hate to keep making comparisons to BB but you'll see lots of comparisons being made elsewhere, so I thought I'll clarify them myself here. I read that Breaking Bad is a show more driven by the plot than the characters, which I can agree with. And a show like The Sopranos or The Wire is a show driven by its characters. If that kind of makes sense to you then I would say Ozark leans more to the latter. While it's still driven by plot, undeniably it's characters are interesting and complex. Ruth being one of my favorite characters has an amazing development over season 1. The show doesn't just rely on our protagonist in the situation he's in but it we learn his family get involved too, which is a nice layer to it all. Also the dynamic between the wife and our protag makes the show even more dramatic and suspenseful. Got to keep it vague and don't want to spoil anything. I would say if you like BB, but also like other suspense crime dramas or like shows like The Wire, Boardwalk Empire or Fargo, I would certainly give this a try. The pilot opens up in Chicago so it's kind of not like the rest of the series but if you give at least 2/3 episodes you should know if you would enjoy it. Season 2 is coming out at the end of this month. Season 1 trailer (does any trailer do a show justice?) I went in to this show completely blind.. Laker23
Oh man, there's something in that trailer I wish they wouldn't have shown. I need to stop watching trailers. Looks good though. From this it seems more action packed than previous seasons. With Better Call Saul on now, this later this month and Fargo in April, at least TV is treating me good this year. Great taste in TV Shows. Just if I can go off topic, slightly. Have you watched Suburra? It's on Netflix. It's good watching if you are in to crime shows. It's only going to be 3 seasons. So it's not a huge chunk to invest. First 2 seasons are out. The finale season is supposed to release in Spring. But might get delayed like Fargo 4. Ozark Season 2 recap. Edit: Just a reminder that first 2 episodes of Ozark are released today! Edit: Watched the first episode of season 3. And wow. The violence was kind of ramped up there at the start. I can't complain about anything. It's more of the same stuff - not a bad thing. I saw everything I enjoy about Ozark in that episode. Mister Pink
Haven't finished it yet. Was on a Run The Jewels track on YouTube and saw the same Ozark "wasn't expect that" comment, so got out of there haha. I take it Run The Jewels was used in the final episode. I decided to stop watching the show after 6 episodes. It's too good. I want it to last longer. I love how we see Ruth listening to Wu-Tang and she also was listening to Gang Starr too. She's my favourite character, aside from Marty. Edited April 3, 2020 by Mister Pink 𝙼𝚄𝚂𝙸𝙲 𝙽𝙾𝙽 𝚂𝚃𝙾𝙿
Laker23
Ruth is fantastic. She has some absolutely gold quotes throughout the series. I actually haven't started watching yet as I'm finishing Narcos: Mexico first, but looking forward to it. I expect a long wait for season 4 so I'll likely drag it out a little, instead of binging it. Was risky entering this topic but so far I've managed to avoid any spoilers quite easily. Mister Pink

And it's probably when I'll enjoy Game of Thrones more (after the hype dies). I like to enjoy shows and stretch them out. Never was much of a fan of binging, however, I did binge Suburra a bit. Narcos: Mexico is next on my list. Yeah, I expect we will be waiting over a year for series 4 all right. At which stage, I might actually re-watch the first couple of series again. Mister Pink
Finished Season 3. Wow, interesting ending. Major spoilers, don't click if you don't want to be spoiled. I'm was happy to see Helen's head getting blown off but also very disappointed that's she's no longer going to be in the show. Her character was great. She was ferocious. Ben, WTF?! He was really pissing me off. I just wanted to see him whacked. I was finding it hard to sympathize with him. At the end he was just this pathological f*ck up. It's like he was self-sabotaging. I know it's mental illness but damn.. that was painful to watch his descent. And I kind of got annoyed that nobody was reiterating the gravity of the situation. I mean, they were saying he must "run" but never explaining that there is most likely a hitman after him and he wont stop. In fact, I don't know how they could ever think of turning Ben loose after what he knew. I know Mrs. Byrde cam through in the end, but it was just painful. And the ease of getting him out of the hospital seemed a bit rushed and too easy. OK, so the Sheriff knows there a judge but I find it hard to believe a judge would let a violent offender out so easily. But OK I hate to complain too much. It's only of my favourite shows. I hold it in such high-regard, I guess I felt it slipped a bit at the end a bit. Overall the season was brilliant. I hope season gets confirmed soon enough. Just knowing it's getting made will be a huge comfort. Right now, to me the show has almost concluded in a way. If there wasn't a 4th series, it would be nice to speculate what could have been. What was the fate of The Byrdes, and did Ruth, cousin and co, go on with their lives on the ranch But there is still plenty of story left for them to write. What happens in Mexico? Do the writers even know at this stage? What will become of Ruth? I hope season 4 focuses on the heroin trade and that farm. Would be great to see what happens there. Also, what happened the guy that proposed to his girl and hot nabbed by the FBI?! The guy hired to loose at the casino Also, is the crazy one now aligned with Kansas City Mob? Here's hoping for a 4th series. 𝙼𝚄𝚂𝙸𝙲 𝙽𝙾𝙽 𝚂𝚃𝙾𝙿
Laker23
Finally got around to finishing it with some time off, some thoughts below. Spoiler - Tom Pelphrey's portrayal of Ben was absolutely fantastic. I'm not familiar with the actor generally, so I'm unsure if he's been in some high profile roles before this, but if he hasn't he certainly will be moving forward. I'd be shocked if some awards don't come his way, he was phenomenal as Ben. Perhaps it was predictable or me being pessimistic, but I figured he would die as soon as he was revealed to be Wendy's brother, and after the car journey from hell I actually felt it was going to be Wendy that did it, I was getting serious 'Of Mice and Men' vibes. That whole episode honestly stressed me out, seeing him unaware of how dangerous it was to want to 'fix things' made me want to yell at the TV. - Navarro is really, really dull. When I look at him compared to the cartel members of Better Call Saul, he's really tame in comparison and I didn't find him at all intimidating throughout the season. Probably because he was locked away in his mansion the whole time. Even in the kidnapping scenes with Marty, he just didn't do it for me. So, I hope he comes out of hiding and actually shows more personality now, because Helen was the one that concerned me the most, and she obviously bit the dust. - I don't particularly mind Helen dying, which I was shocked at how it happened. I felt her plan would backfire all along, but I wasn't expecting it to happen before the credits rolled on this season, I felt they would play into that more in the next one. - I could have done without Darlene and Wyatt making out, but what you gonna do? I hope Wyatt gets a happy ending from all of this, but it wouldn't overly surprise me if he doesn't. Ruth was fantastic as usual, and I'm super interested to see how next season plays out with her now no longer apart of the Byrde's. She seemed content to just move on, but I suspect Darlene will try her very best to twist her into going after them next time out. There's no way Darlene, Ruth and Wyatt are all surviving, something's gotta give there. I'd be shocked if this doesn't get another season. It ticks all the boxes for Netflix, highly watched, award nominations and award wins. Whether they're waiting for some of this pandemic to blow over before announcing anything I don't know, but another season is almost certainly on the way. Wouldn't mind a couple more. I feel the opposite about Navarro. I don't see him as dull at all. I mean, we don't really know him. But he's quite ruthless. He reminds me of a CEO I knew. Really have to prove your worth all the time. And if he's gets a whiff of irrelevance from you, he'll toss you out, no questions asked. And I don't need to see more of his personality. Those people are usually quite guarded anyway. So for me, being cold, calculated, playing his cards close to his chest, not revealing too much about his motives or decision making process is more intriguing than us actually getting to see more of his personality. But that's just me. I'm sure we'll see more of him in Season 4 but I think the intention was to keep me distant and mysterious. Basically our knowledge of Novarro is the same as the Byrdes. So we as a viewer kind of relate to the Byrdes and their need to keep relevant to Novarro but how do you do that when you he is so closed-off? Helen was a great character. Was shocked but not surprised when she went. Edited May 21, 2020 by Mister Pink 𝙼𝚄𝚂𝙸𝙲 𝙽𝙾𝙽 𝚂𝚃𝙾𝙿

Was shocked but not surprised when she went. I don't mind them not revealing a whole lot about his personality, I don't need to know his life story, so to speak. When I compare him with Del I feel a lot less intimidated by him. I understand he conducts himself in a completely different manner than him, but nothing I saw from season three made me feel uneasy towards him, and I wanted to feel that way. We didn't get a whole lot of information on the war he was having with his rivals, but he came across as extremely vulnerable in that situation, which probably didn't help my opinion of him. Perhaps I've been spoiled by the big entertaining cartel characters I mentioned in BCS, and both Narcos series, as well. I just want to see more of him in season four, and not have him brooding in the background as much. I forgot to mention Jonah in my thoughts. I'm curious to see what they do with him next time out, as they've teased him going off the rails a few times over the seasons, and now it seems like he's reached a breaking point, so that should be fun.
