DeathMachine15
Is it worth picking up a PS1 and a copy of this game out of curiosity just for the sake of trying it out, was thinking of doing this as I have never played it before? It will be my first top down GTA.

Yeah because if you download a 20 year old game that is abandonware Rockstar will obviously sue you. ^ was sarcasm. you can download it for free without any issues. you won't get "caught" nor will anyone care. No. It's not worth getting on PS1. Edited August 2, 2018 by RetroMystic
BBBean
GTA1 PC version was legally available for free download on Rockstar's site but it's not there anymore. I'm not sure if it's technically legal to download it now as Rockstar was once distributing it for free but is not at the moment, but getting into trouble for downloading it is unlikely anyway. On the other hand a GTA1 CD for PC shouldn't cost very much on eBay for example. I bought mine from eBay. If you get the PS1 CD, you can also use an emulator to play it on a computer if you do not want to buy a Playstation 1 console. If you are worried about legal things, there are PS emulators that do not require a ROM dump file. Is it worth buying? I don't know, depends on how much interested you are. In my opinion GTA1 is not even nearly as great as GTA2 but this is a matter of preference. Anyway it's nice to see that there are people who are interested in the history of the series. Helegad
Toshiba-3's Max Pack is the way to go. Save states give the game some serious longevity. mde2, Tommy1233, Paisan™ and 1 other
MorphosisX
It's a great game and sadly unappreciated by gamers these days. Most people probably quit already in Liberty City which I will admit is the most boring district of all but once you get to San Andreas and Vice City the real fun begins. It is hard but what can you expect from a game in the 90's? Think of beating this game as a ritual of passage for a GTA-player. Once you have beaten it, you are certainly ready for every game after it and you have experienced the series right down to it's core. thehambone, Wakka387, slippery slope and 3 others

It's free to download and play off of the Rockstar Games official website. It's not the same as playing it on the actual Playstation though. This game is a classic. And every man that claims to be a true GTA supporter should have played it. No matter the age. No discrimination. If you say your a GTA supporter then go back to the roots and realize where it came from and where it is now. Comrade Monke
jm-9
For anyone who wants to play it, I would recommend playing through GTA 2 first. This will get you used to the tank-style controls and general presentation of the early games in a far more forgiving game, where you have a life bar and can save after every mission. For every game up to and including GTA III, it cannot be stressed enough that you need a physical map. The biggest mistake people make is downloading the older games and not giving them a chance because they don't know where to go. This particularly applies to games before GTA III, as at least that game has a radar. There is no in-game map in these games. That feature wasn't introduced until Vice City. The biggest/best maps that can easily be gotten for each game are: GTA 1: European PC big box GTA London 1969: PAL PS1 (original and special edition have the same map). GTA 2: European PC big box, otherwise NTSC PS1 GTA III: All versions have the same map. GTA Advance (since this doesn't have an in-game map either): US version. More common European version did not include a map. GTA London 1969 and GTA 2 have far better maps in the European PC big box and US PC big box editions respectively, but these are extremely hard to find, next to impossible in the case of the latter. Casualplaya
The original had a great atmosphere - and it was fun on multiplayer! Loved rigging cars to blow, starting the timer and deliberately let the other player steal my car from me. I had a blast (literally! ) In today's HD Gaming World I still like the coarse pixels. Plus some of the funny parts such as the Hare Krishna, People running onto the Subway tracks and just electrocuting themselves, was kinda made in a slapstick-y manner.
