Fair enough dude. Seems like a bit harsh. That's your assumption it's stupid and then the reaction is to ridicule? If we were just ridicule everything we found stupid it wouldn't be much of a community or forum.

I'm assuming he thought of Belfast/NI due to paramilitary gang activity, sectarian divide, armored police vehicles and almost militarised police, riots, and up until the 90's British soldier presence and patrols on the streets, on the street, spies and counterspies and double agents, MI5, UVF and IRA and one of the biggest prison escapes in history with one of Europes most secure prisons, political turmoil and historical political figures like Margret Thatcher and Bobby Sands.

Will it happen? Don't think so. Is it fun to entertain the thought? Yeah maybe, why not? That's what we're here for, no? But perhaps you can offer some insight of why it won't work in a topic called "Would GTA still be fun if it's outside the US."

* I'm not gonna ridicule everything I find to be stupid coming from someone on these forums, no, and generally I don't. But if someone states something which I find exceptionally stupid, then yeah sometimes, I may label it as such, and ridicule it. A forum's purpose is also for a bit of fun and entertainment in a debate or discussion, as much as it is for seriousness.

* Sounds interesting for a movie, but for GTA ? Not a chance in hell for me, it'd be boring, unappealing, and uninteresting as f*ck.

* No problem with entertaining these thoughts. All I can say is that if they sound incredibly silly and implausible, then it's clear as to why one would get responses with dismissive tones laced with ridicule.

* I've discussed this subject many times in previous threads, too many times to be bothered to go into detail, I only wanted to responded to the Northern Ireland suggestion (LOL again). I'll round it off by just saying I personally would not find GTA outside of the USA fun or interesting and I am not an American national. The themes and settings for a game like GTA are based on material in the USA that interests and fascinates me - that is where I get my fun from, when playing GTA. Without that, I just can't see myself having as much fun.

I could see a game opening in Northern Ireland like what V did with the robbery in North Yankton. You could have the protagonist fighting for one of the groups over there during the troubles in the 80s then it switches to where he is now in the present in the US.

Of course it would be fun if set out of US. London, Toronto, Vancouver would make great game settings. These places got everything one needs for GTA, diverse range of ethnic gangs, high crime rate (and if not, c'mon GTA is supposed to be exaggerated), cultures to parody and lot of other things. But also, I want Miami and Chicago to be done first before moving out of US.

I think it would be a pretty good idea to have a GTA game take place outside of the US. I’d especially like to see one take place in either Sicily, Moscow, Mexico City, or Tokyo, as it would be nice to see a little bit of mafia, cartel, or yakuza origins. I also agree with Crossbones in that London, Toronto, and Vancouver would not be bad ideas at all. Just like the United States, other English-speaking countries like the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are starting to have a lot of foreign ethnic influence.

A country having a significantly high rate of organized crime or one that has a variety foreign ethnic elements is not enough on their own to make a great GTA setting. I just think it takes much more than that, in a way that I don't have time to explain right now. The USA is perfectly suited to what GTA represents and offers, I just can't see other countries matching it, especially the ones mentioned in this quote.

To answer the question : NO

Only the US offers so well known cities and so many well known behaviors that the typical satire elements work and are understood all over the world.

In a real big map including few american cities I could imagine a part of the map being an other country as Mexico or Cuba.

I think you're just ignorant, at long last a GTA would work nearly everywhere as long as graphics, gameplay and story would be done well.

I'm wondering what's so ridicilous about Northern Ireland/Belfast though.

LOL is this map supposed to convince me that Northern Ireland is a great GTA setting and location ?? Seriously, stop, it's embarrassing.

Anyway the quote above from Dan Houser puts paid to invalidity of your laughable idea.

GTA isn't just about crime. And even if it was,  USA still would be the best place to include all varied categories of crime.

Well it wasn't a GTA and relied heavily on hand to hand combat which suited it's location.

wow, you realize that it is really similar to gta? Just because it's got more of a Hong Kong movie style gameplay, doesn't make it dissimilar enough. And it really feels like gta set in Hong Kong. Have you even played it? I have.

Yes I finished it like 3-4 times. I really enjoyed it more than saints row and watch dogs. But you were an undercover cop in that game and I also once again insist that GTA has a satirical side along with it's crime side that best suits America. Sleeping dogs didn't have a satirical side. Anyways it's one of my favorites.

Then I don't get what you're on about. Satire is something that could be done, if just researched enough.

Yes it "could" be done but not good. USA is the "best" place to include satire due to it's culture. That doesn't mean other places can't have satire, but why not pick the better place?

Come on dude. How can I be biased when Sleeping Dogs was one of my favorites. All I'm saying is that each game should take place in the best place it can. Sleeping dogs couldn't make sense outside hong kong just like GTA couldn't be at it's best outside the US. It's not like they "can't" take place anywhere else but the developer should always choose the place that has the better "base" to replicate the game's content. That's not just about GTA. I'm talking about every game.

Not quite the same game bro. Similar structure in basic physical design and gameplay mechanics, but very different in theme, representation, and expression. Having said that, Sleeping Dogs was fun yeah, and I’d be happy to have a GTA-styled game outside of the USA - just not GTA.

The Mexicans in Red Dead Redemption 1 spoke English during Cutscenes and sometimes during freemode.

Rdr1 didnt suck, so we're getting another called Rdr2.

The Mexicans in RDR1 were close to the American border so it would make sense for them to talk English but it would ruin the atmosphere if you hear a French guy speaking English in France.

I have to say no. I really enjoyed Sleeping Dogs and would like more games like it set in other countries but GTA's identity is too connected with America. Iconic cities, memorable satire, since GTA 3 the series has a very american focused vibe and if anything it has increased.

I don't like it when franchises change their identity in a drastic way.

Oh Canada is far alway from France, so it would make sense for them to speak France...

Oh Assassins Creed was weird cause everyone spoke English in Italy...

Noone cares, as long as they understand the Language . Every country has a sub languages so it wouldn't ruin it

But if you guys see in the store Grand Theft Auto: 6 and you look on the back and you see that it is in Amsterdam you aren`t going to buy it ?

I'll buy it.

Then I'll go and make a three-point-turn every time I want to escape the cops along a canal road. ;o)

I've been looking around now and then, trying to imagine it, but the recognizable parts of Amsterdam (or any other Dutch town) aren't made for driving. Hell, the Netherlands aren't really made for driving unless you go Electric Hatchback.
