Could we see an online only spinoff?

I was thinking that with the massive success of GTAO we might actually see an iteration of GTA in the future than is Online only and completely separate from the canon numbered series. Sort of a WOW style release. Numbered games would continue but they would have the online game aside from it.

This would mean they could have seasons and alterations every year and change content constantly.

What do you think? I wouldn't be crazy about it but I can't say that I'd hate it either.

Its definately possible. Going by how The Crew works, which is essentially all online. GTA could take that step, but the only issue I see is scripts (as in talking). If our online characters can't talk, then its a little difficult. Unless they provide a series of options and answers that determine an outcome (a la Deus Ex).

I predicted to myself years ago that GTA Online would become its own thing. I can see GTA VI being Single Player only with GTA Online becoming like a free-to-play MMO that you can download separately.

Like TESO with different cities being made for paid DLC lke Summerset and Morrowind. We could see places like Bullworth and Carcer City.

Conversely, what I think will happen is that GTA 6 will be a predominantly online experience, where they will figure a way to progress a story within the online environment, perhaps using the ranking and $ system to unlock parts of the story in sequence as the player (or players, in co-op) progresses.

Rcokstar struck gold with GTA5, they released a singleplayer game that had a full complete singleplayer experience and charged you the player the price of a typical singleplayer game, that game also happened to have a multiplayer online component attached free of charge. You could hope in do some stuff make some money and if you wanted top you could pay them real world cash for in game currency. The thing is the online part was a bit, iffy, slow, crap back end infra-structure a thematic job system that tried to keep you in game but doesn't really work because of the sh*tty in game implementation and Rcokstar cheaping out on the infra-structure behind it but hey the game was new and all that WAS going to get fixed, and then the cash started rolling in, rolling in fast and hard and it turned out that Rcokstar didn't actually have to fix ANY of the issues, the could keep their cheap crappy game design and infra-structure and as long as they tossed a fresh fish in the seals would keep clapping their fins for more. End of the day GTA5 was meant to be a single player game with full DLC support and GTAO was always going to be the free of charge slightly crappy, spin off that would maybe pull in a few quid here and there the fact that it totally overshadowed the single player part and resulting the total cancellation of ALL single player support in favour of going full online was never really the plan

Problem with Rcokstar going full online with the game is that Rcokstar will have to make sure it works, 100% of the time every time. They won't be able to get away with the sh*tty lobby controls, the piss poor stuck in the clouds waiting waiting forever f*cking waiting, the stuck launching job logo because someone in the lobbies connection crapped out, the utterly piss poor level of control players have over lobby and job types and setups that the current game offers, in essence the sh*tty quality of GTAO's actual connection and services simply won't pass muster and neither will the quality of the gameplay, The reality is that the game design and job design over the last 2 to 3 years has moved to making doing jobs a grind, endless respawning NPCs with terminator style aims that can suck bullets for days but can one shot you from across the map, NPCs that act like retards whenever you drive near them, fetch and deliver missions in slow boring vehicles. If Rcokstar want to go full online then they need to step up the quality of the back end service, I can boot BF1 and be in a game doing stuff of my choosing in 1 minute, I can boot GTAO and be online and doing a job that will no doubt not be what I wanted but it's the closest the quick launch could give me in around 6 to 7 minutes and that simply isn't f*cking good enough it certainly isn't good enough if that job is some grindy unfun non sense and it certainly isn't good enough if Rcokstar, and it is Rcokstar, expect players to pay an upfront cost for the Online game and then expect them to pay more once they get in game.

Agree with the above. A designed-from-the-ground-up GTA online game has the potential to be great, but they have so much to sort out to make it work. The connectivity issues are a big one for me. I wouldn't like to add up how much wasted time I have spent in the clouds or getting "There was an error joining a session..." and "Timed out joining session..." messages.

I don't think so. R* loves their single-player stories.

(comedy answer: that's what GTAO's DLCs are)

Considering Dan Houser said GTA will always be story/single player and that single player will always be the main priority. I don't think so. Ok, so they cut out story DLC to focus on GTA Online. But this is about the time Dan came out and said this. So i think this cutting out story DLC for online was a one off thing. I personally think if Red Dead 2 Online is anything like GTAV Online then people are going to get fed up with it pretty quickly. The more they make Rockstars online sections of thier titles grindfest pay to win like GTA Online, the more people will tire of it. Many people got tired of GTA Online ages ago and stopped playing. The only reason it still has people playing is because it sold 95 million copies. Whats the highest number of players online, was it 2 million? I forget. I know only a small portion of people who bought the game play it online. The majority just play the story.  And no way will Rcokstar put a main GTA game on hold to make an online spin off. Think about it. GTA Games are huge and take years to make. If they made an online spin off it would mean they have to put a main GTA game on hold for years while they made the spin off. Not happening. You will just get a main GTA game with online added into that rather than a spin off.  You may see a mobile spin off of somekind made by Rockstar Leeds or something. But nothing major.

People would have never predicted Fallout 76 being an Online Only Online Spin off but it happened. I dont think they expected GTA Online to be a profitable as it has been. That train aint stopping anytime soon and its gonna eventually need a bigger boat.

not sure about a spinoff like WoW but I'd certainly love a far larger WoW-like world and less '30 player lobbies' and more massively multiplayer and persistence.

hard to say though... don't think I'd choose it over a SP game. kinda like the approach they had with 5, though I'd have liked a bit more balance between SP and MP content 😜

No. I mean a totally separate world. Not an online version of the new story mode.

True. I just don't see it happening though for reasons i mentioned above. I think this whole online grindfest pay to win is going to start falling hard in the next year or two. Other devs are already being kicked in the nuts over it, like EA for example. At the moment Rockstar seem to be the only dev that can get away with it. But i think that bubble is about to burst when Red Dead 2 releases. Because if Red Dead 2 Online is anything like GTA Online, grindfest, pay to win, many will simply say "Fu*k this sh*t....its just another grindfest aimed towards sharkcard sales again!"  In fact, tons of people are boycotting Red Dead 2 because its looking like it will be just like GTAV Online. That bubble is already starting to burst but will soon pop. People simply won't want to keep playing grindfest pay to win games over and over. I think that boat has already gotten so big its now about to sink. Maybe if they come up with a new idea, i dont know. Just can't see it.

I was being sarcastic. GTA V singleplayer has been neglected so badly that you might as well consider it as an online only game

Hahaha, a spinoff.

I’m sure GTA VI will be Online-only, or a small singleplayer that has your nameless clown of a character as a more pretentious variant of a Saints Row protagonist, just without any of the charm.

I think Grand Theft Auto (VI) Online will be a continuation of the current GTA Online, because,,,hmmm level 8000. You will need to rebuy GTAO. GTA VI will be single player.

gtao its already it own thing, so yeah, in the future i can see R* releasing GTA VI as a single player game, which grants you access to gtao 2.0 and maybe selling gtao separately for those that dont care about the single player aspect.
