🇷🇺 FIFA World Cup 2018 🇷🇺

Brazil lost the game on two points:

-Casemiro was out, and replaced by Fernandinho who is not nearly as half as competente as Casemiro. Casemiro was holding the defense together and making life difficult for the opposition, just like he does in Real Madrid. He's also tireless, dude can run nearly the entire match. Swap Fernandinho in? Yeahhhh.

-Tactically, Martinez learned a lot from the Japan game, and adjusted his team. Tite, on the other hand, didn't. He expected De Bruyne to stay a defensive mid, and was completely powerless to react as he was deployed as more of an offensive character, running the game for Belgium in the offense. Without Casemiro to stop him, it became easy. Then his overreliance on Gabriel Jesus as his sole striker, hoping he'd suddenly turn on and begin scoring, whereas he's been absolutely dreadful in this cup. He needed to call up a more experienced striker to go with him, for when the youth isn't performing well.

Props to Belgium for nearly completely annulling Neymar without giving fouls away. Dipsh*t didn't have nearly as many chances to dive and squirm on the ground. But then, with his team losing, you'd find that he'd actually be a more resilient fella this time around.

On in the second half, Belgium just dropped back and waited. Their counter is deadly, and they were ahead, no reason to keep pushing against Brazil. And it paid off.

I'm happy Brazil is out for the simple reason that Neymar is not mature enough to be a world champion. The title would go so much up his head that he would become even more insufferable. And the media in Brazil would crown him the god emperor of football, praising his every fart, and eternally thankful to him for the 6th cup. (Completely ignoring the effort of the rest of the team, as they are wont to do).

Good riddance. Hope they drop the coach too, as Tite doesn't have the offensive mindset to make the Brazil team play great soccer like in the old days.

And hoping for a Belgian win against the French, just for the chance of a brand new world champion.

I'm not sure if Brasil scoring more goals in that match makes the loss against Belgium more or less surprising.

Seriously, though, if they played the first half the way they did the second, they'd probably be moving on.

First World Cup semi final in my lifetime. Win or lose, it's been a good run.

Me too, what a time to be alive.

I have to give it to Russia, they have brilliant spirits and they didn't let Croatia win easily.

Croatia, see you Wednesday.

And actually, England is a pretty interesting and decent team. Not part of the favorites, but they have the quality to beat any team in my opinion.

I was right!

Great result today, although in the words of Han Solo "Great kid, don't get cocky".  The saving grace is that Croatia looked dead on their feet by the end of that match.

You could say that you’ve been waiting for this day for a long time, then lol.

Yeah the atmosphere on London’s streets was nothing like I’ve experienced before after today’s win, of course I’m hoping England make it through to the final, but even if we lose on Wednesday, it was good to be part of.

After watching Croaita earlier though, I don’t know, I kind of expected more from them? Maybe it was just a bad game for them, who knows.

The extra effort they had to exert to get through extra time and penalties could well hurt Croatia in the match on Wednesday.

There's quite a few parallels with Italia 90, the team back then did have some fairly well known names, like Gazza and Lineker, but they weren't "big" names (because that came after the event).  England have several players like that now, who are very well known, but they're not like usual suspects of Messi, Ronaldo, Naymar etc.  The atmosphere was like it was back then, in that the expectations were reasonable, relatively speaking, but they weren't bordering on being arrogant.

But for me the main thing is that the team back then, were indeed that, very much a team, not a group of individuals, this Southgate team is that, a team, not a group of individuals, and they're not like England teams of recent years where players were very cliquey, United players sticking with United players, Chelsea with Chelsea etc, this team are like Bobby's boys of Italia 90, everyone sticking together and ignoring their club allegiances and being England players.

I think that's where some teams have come unstuck in the tournament is that they're either too cliquey, or rely too much on one player.  For me the best England teams throughout the years have been those who don't have those individuals or cliques, Mexico 86, Italia 90, and more so England 66, as those boys weren't big names before the tournament (relativity speaking), but they sure as hell made their name after it, and when they pulled on the England shirt, they were England, not club, players.

I rooted for Brazil and now Belgium kicked them out. I will be rooting for them against France and hopefully they capture the cup eventually. If not them, then I'd go with the Croats. You know, a new team, fresh air. France and England already have one star, so that's enough for now :pp

England's playing style doesn't suit him, compared to domestically when he's at City, so I'm not surprised that's not quite at that level yet.  At City he's got more freedom to run in at defenses, as there is usually 2 or 3 other players running up the back to support and catch onto loose balls; whereas England don't play that way and keep a very rigid style of play.  I'm sure if Sterling was playing in a more "freer" style like the Iberian sides, he'd be banging more in.  That's why I'm kinda hoping that Southgate has a little more one on one time with Guardiola as he did earlier this year, to see if we could actually start to adopt a little more of the passing style, but with speed that the English game is used to.

As for the game... whoooft, the right result, considering Colombia should have been down to 10.

I think I've actually lost a few pounds tonight as well, they don't half make you sweat.

Interesting video that you might like coherently arguing against the idea that Sterling is bad. But I've noticed his value against Sweden, who struggled controlling him. It's frustrating that he doesn't score though.

Not as many goals as I was expecting, but the result I was. Belgium had a great 30 minute spell in the first half, but never replicated it in the second.

I'd be surprised if either England or Croatia beats them, but this WC has been full of surprises.

My god France are a bunch of flopping pansies.

I hope whoever wins tomorrow beats the everliving sh*t out of them

They're surely ripping a page off of Neymar's book.

And to me, Brazil would be better off without Neymar. He's a total diva, even Mexico are embarrassed by the way he acts.

stinomontana

we still could of won, the tackle in front of the 16 wich the ref din't care about but 5 seconds later we get a foul and a yellow card.

then later on they get a foul and they just run off with the ball to win time.

and putting the whole team on defence since the first second the match started

that shows you the mentality of french people. just like the way they drive...

Edited by stinomontana

The only dodgy thing France did was at the end when Mbappe played silly billies to waste time, if the shoe was on the other foot then Belgium would have done the EXACT same. Every single team wastes time.

France more than deserved the result though, they gave a defensive masterclass from top to bottom. Varane putting him self at the front of the argument for the best centre half in the world after that game I think, Pogba was also fanstastic. Belgium's plan A failed and after that it felt like Martinez was just throwing on players and hoping something happens. A bit too much tactical tweaking from Martinez probably.

I'm so fond of football this France-Belgium match is the first one I watch from the world cup .

The Blues deserve their victory and I hope they will win like in 98, this victory was a wonderful moment. It was 20 years ago but I remember it as if it was yesterday, people were totally overjoyed, that was amazing.

Dull as dishwater that game, very average performance from both sides.  De Bruyne was played out of position, and Hazard should have had a free kick outside the box in the second half, and would have been vintage De Bruyne territory.  France weren't exciting to watch, which has been about the third time this tournament (Australia and Denmark being the other two).

Come on, Croatia! Don't let me down!

That's the thing people forget at this stage.

Yes, Croatia are likely tired, after two previous matches driven all the way to penalties. Yes, they have flaws and weaknesses, but no one can write them off now it's all knockout and no second chances.

I've heard lots of views (some of them from professional pundits) and the amount that are already writing off Croatia makes me nervous.

I'll only eliminate Croatia when the final whistle goes and England have done it.

As for the final, I'm backing my initial pick of France to win it, but if England get there and get outplayed in the 90 minutes, they have absolutely nothing to be ashamed of.

Would really suck if they lose both the euro and world cup final lul

They didn't really lose the 2016 €uro. The Portuguese seleção thieves shamefully stole it.
