Bekgium seemed to lack energy and after the 2-0 I thought they were done. Japan played very well organized and smart. Then there was the lucky header by Vertonghen, and then fear seeped into Japan. They gave Hazard way too much space to cross, and were all covering Fellaini. But you could try covering Fellaini with as many Japanese players as you want, it's impossible. Amazing counter for the 3-2 by de Bruyne, who looks like 70% of his usual self after a draining season. Great step over by Lukaku. Chadli did very well, and did much better than Carrasco has done this tournament, who has looked out of place on left wing back.

Gutted for Japan, was really routing for them in the second half, they gave it everything, they should be damned proud of that performance.

I woke up at 4 something AM to my wife and family screaming after Belgium turned the game around. So damn near! A bit more, and they could have pushed for the penalties and get a chance to qualify.

Β

I think they weren't expecting the Belgians to go so strong in the air game. They expected them to pass and go into speed, and were surprised by the shift into the crossing after they went 2-0. Shame! So close!

Β

They can be proud, though. Japan played very well against a very strong team, and can use that as a basis to grow.

The Fellaini effect, innit. Got a love/hate relationship with that man but that height and style of play...Β It doesn't always work but sometimes he changes games.

Β

I've had France pegged all tournament (and pre) as favourites but atm I think Brazil might be edging it. Defensively they are looking very good and they obviously have the talent at the other end of the pitch. We shall see though, that Belgium - Brazil game is potentially a final in its self - who ever wins that is gonna be sky high on confidence and momentum.

Ugh. I loathe Neymar. I wish Brazil gets knocked out by anyone while he's on the team. I can't stand that diving c*nt, and I know that if Brazil wins the cup, he'll be proclaimed the hero and the greatest ever, all because his family has deep pockets to pay for media.

Β

You saw his acting against Mexico, right?

Β

Β

The Mexican coach called out Neymar's attitude, of diving and playacting and whatnot. Look at that. The Mexican guy didn't even touch Neymar, and he was contorting himself like the worm that he is. But in Brazil?! Oh wow, they claimed the Mexican player should have been sent off for criminally stepping on Neymar, they claimed the Mexican coach was out of line to single out Neymar's acting, and a bunch of bullsh*t, all to protect the golden boy.

Β

f*ck him. f*ck him hard. I hope he suffers a career ending injury some day, or turns his head around and stops being such a diva.

For shame, Colombia. You actually managed to lose to England on penalties.

Β

Actually, personal biases aside, it was the right result given Colombia's antics.

Exactly my thoughts. After those first half antics I was dying to see them lose.

We actually won on penalties!

Β

I never knew Colombia were such a dirty, dirty team, to go as far as scuffing the penalty spot lol.

Β

Living around the corner from a pub, I can hear half of LondonΒ going mad.

Sterling should be benched though. If that guy gets a freer role than sticking to the right wing he is an absolute donkey.

England's playing style doesn't suit him, compared to domestically when he's at City, so I'm not surprised that's not quite at that level yet.Β  At City he's got more freedom to run in at defenses, as there is usually 2 or 3 other players running up the back to support and catch onto loose balls; whereas England don't play that way and keep a very rigid style of play.Β  I'm sure if Sterling was playing in a more "freer" style like the Iberian sides, he'd be banging more in.Β  That's why I'm kinda hoping that Southgate has a little more one on one time with Guardiola as he did earlier this year, to see if we could actually start to adopt a little more of the passing style, but with speed that the English game is used to.

Β

As for the game... whoooft, the right result, considering Colombia should have been down to 10.

Β

I think I've actually lost a few pounds tonight as well, they don't half make you sweat.

On one side: France vs Uruguay, Brazil vs Belgium

On the other side: Croatia vs Russia, England vs Sweden

Β

All solid games. All I'm hoping is that Belgium can pull through Brazil, teaching Neymar how to be less of a dick.

Β

For the rest? Any winner will be fine by me, though I'd love for this cup to end with a brand new winner, be it Belgium, Croatia, Russia, or Sweden!

Currently France is the favorite for me. They're the team from Euro 2016 + an unstoppable Mbappe. After what happened with the France squad in South-Africa I don't expect great things from them anymore. This France team is on fire though, and has everything.

If England can get past Sweden, which may be easier without Ibrahiimovic playing for them, I would expect Croatia to get past Russia, England could have good chance in that game as we've got a good record record against them... famous last words and all that.

Β

The other side of the bracket looks more difficult, Uruguay has been dogged all tournament, but may struggle if Cavani isn't fit enough, France have been good in the more recent games, but they did start very poorly.Β  Brazil, whilst winning games, really haven't looked that magnificent as you'd expect, which means if Belgium turn up, they could turn them over... but Brazil can Brazil and pull it off.

Β

Could be interesting this one.

Belgium just became favourites. Hazard, Lukaku and KdB gave an absolute masterclass,Β Hazard in the last 10 minutes gave a 10/10 target man performance. Brazil perhaps a bit tactically rigid, they needed width so badly as Belgium were purposefully making a very narrow midfield, it also didn't help that Gabriel Jesus was woeful in every game he played.

The first Belgian goal was undeservedΒ as the ball was reflected by the Brazilian defense and came as a surprise to the goal keeper. Brazil had most of the chances inside the penalty areaΒ to score and they put more offensive pressure in the second half with some neat chances to score. Belgium's Lukaku was the most danger for the Brazilian defense in the first half, but then he was contained and put on watch in the second half, which paid off well by not having the Belgians making dangerous attempts to score a third goal. Generally speaking, Brazil, as a national team, has lost the tactics and cohesion that it has been known for decades, especiallyΒ in the 1994-2006 period, or what's know as the Ronaldo generation. National teams, that weren't heard about before in the context of World Cup tournaments,Β are now rising and making a good reputationΒ like Belgium.Β

Brazil is a great team, and if in Englands half, they surely would've beat every other team and made the final. But Belgium is one of the top teams this tournament, and they did outplay Brazil in the first half. The second half they were on their backfoot, which is understandable considering they were 2-0 up. You are right that Brazil got really good at sniffing out the counter. I think ultimately Belgium completely deserved the win. I have sympathy for Brazil but it's good to see that disgraceful c*nt Neymar out.

I feel the winner of France and Belgium will probably win the lot, but who knows with how this WC has gone so far.

Β

If England can beat Sweden without the drama tomorrow, that would be lovely.

dante貑ι–₯

Sweden are professional sh*thouses. They are going to be so tough to break down. The only positive for England is that they don't pose much threat attacking wise, so they should be free to wear them down without worrying defensively too much.

Journey_95

Wow, even Brazil is out now. This WC is really off..

Β

Germany being gone so soon already was bad enough but after that I was hoping for some other top teams to take over...but this WC is very open.Β
