What do you think would be the best tie breaker after points, goal difference, and goals scored?

Fight to the death.

Nah, but seriously, there's no other criterias to untie things. Yellow cards, Red cards, and then a coin toss because f*ck it, if two teams were that much equal to each other? Their own fault.

There's nothing practical really, the teams could be hundreds of miles apart so something like a penalty shootout wouldn't work. It's very strange how it's become a factor this year.

Fantastic game. France looked extremely deadly on the counter attack, and Messi missed that one shot that could have turned the game around.

That last attack at the last minute too, wow. Could really see them scoring.

But alas, it was not meant to be. One of the greatest players of all time will retire from the national team having failed to win any silverware with them. Not even a Copa America.

Fully prepared for a 0-0 in a couple hours after that incredible game. Felt the scoreline flattered Argentina. France look incredibly deadly running at the defence.

Once again I need to use this moment to remark what an utter dick Otamendi is. For the second time he boots the ball at a player on the ground. Petulant child of a man.

I still can't understand how Messi isn't criticized the way he should. I mean 90 minutes and all he did was walk around the field with his head down (Like the Argentina - Iceland  and Argentina - Croatia)... I mean, WTF? You are one of the best (If not the best), player in the world, why don't you  try to push your team forward with you? Take out the spirit of wining and act like Cholo Simeone when he tells the whole Atletico crowd to cheer as hard as they can because their team need them. Your team needed you the most Messi, and once again you let them down. Messi just walks and walks with his head down and plays like he is not interested. I bet millions of kids in Argentina dream about getting to play in their National team... A dream Messi is quite NOT interested, very hard to digest.

I am NOT trashing Messi because i dislike him, i am criticizing him because he shows NO attitude when he plays for his national team. Let's be honest, if another player played as bad as Messi, he would have been put in the bench for the rest of the WC (Like they did with Willy Caballero). But since he is Messi, he is allowed to walk and if you criticize him, you almost get beaten up.

Is NOT normal for Messi to have 65 goals in total in his football career with Argentina. That 6 more goals than David Villa (59) with Spain which yes, he was a TOP player but not at the same level as Messi. You might argue that Messi plays for a National team that's "trash" just like it's players... An argument I disagree with, when a lot of Argentinian players play in TOP clubs in Europe. Also, if we are going to talk about "trash" National teams;  i haven't seen Jovetic with Montenegro walk around the field with his head down like Messi does, I haven't seen Gareth Bale do the same as Messi with Wales, I haven't seen Mkhitaryan do the same thing as Messi with Armenia, I haven't seen Adebayor do the same thing as Messi with Togo and so on... And the national teams i have mentioned are a million times worse than Argentina.

No excuse, Messi. You are a TOP football player, but you only play good when you want to. You have NO discipline.

PD. No i am not a Real Madrid/ Cristiano / FC Barcelona / Argentina fanboy. I am just expressing my opinion.

Messi plays the same way for Barca though? He's not a particularly vocal player, he drifts around at a walking pace doing seemingly nothing but finds him self in dangerous pockets of space to attack, that's how he plays and has been for years. In the game today he played most of the match as a false 9 meaning he not only have to centre forward but also play midfield, the man is 30 years old and not the young speedster he once was. He can't pick the ball up 50 yards from goal and dribble through France's midfield and defence and score. He also can't sit up front and wait for the ball to come to him because the team has no where near enough quality in midfield and out wide to do that either. Despite all that, he was still involved in two of the goals for his team today.

Argentina's problem isn't Messi, it's everything else. The manager chopped and changed the team every game which gives the strong impression that he had absolutely no idea what his best team was, he failed to fit in players like Dybala and persisted with players like Meza who was flat out f*cking terrible all tournament. Having Mascherano in the squad nevermind the starting eleven was also a poor decision, he looked well past his sell by date and individually had one of the worst performances I've seen at a World Cup against Croatia. If there's one individual to single out for criticism from Argentina's WC campaign then Messi is the absolute last player you'd pick IMO.

Argentina's best chance of winning a World Cup was in 2014, but Higuain's got a spanner for a foot.

He's 31 and Copa America is next year. So he might give that one more try, and who knows, 35 isn't much, maybe Qatar 2022 right before retirement, but that's up to him.

Great game though, most fun of this WC so far. GG France, what a beast midfield and attack.

That's the France we were all waiting to see! Awesome attacking, granted I only caught the second half, but that was still some good sh*t from them. Can't wait to see more of that. Did Dembele not get subbed in at all? I'd tipped him to be player of the tournament, haha

Queenslayer

I chose France many months ago.

The whole of the first team, back to front, are all strong, quick, powerful and more importantly a lot of them are at their peak or quickly developing.  Defence you have guys like Umtiti and Varane, a decent keeper in Lloris, top midfielders like Kante, Pogba, Matuidi then going forward you have guys like Greizmann, M'Bappe.  Spain in 2010 were at their peak and Germany in 2014 were at their peak.

I can't see anyone other than France this year

But Ronaldo will :)

Uruguay are nightmarish to play against man. Near impossible to create a chance against them nevermind score against them. If Cavani is fit then they have a big chance of winning the lot.

Sad to see Ronaldo and Messi go out though, some part of me did want one of them win it.

Great games today. I'll take this entertainment tomorrow again, please.

Cavani doesn't look too worried about whatever the injury is, got 6 days to make sure he's ready.

I doubt it. He already nearly quit after the Copa America failure, and had to be persuaded to return. At 35, he'll be older, he'll be slower, and there'll still be a struggle about how to get him to play.

Uruguay, master class. Really hardy team, tough to beat, and very deadly.

This world cup is getting better and better!

This wouldn't hurt so much for Argentina if they just made use of their chances against Germany 4 years ago.

EDIT: Spain makes over 1000 passes and still lose. Enjoy your flight back home haha tiki taka bs

well, that was surprising! Spain can feel hard done by there, in extra time it looked like two Spanish were dragged down on that set piece. The referee halted play as he was being informed about something (I would guess the possible foul in the box?), and then chose to not review? I don't understand why the ref would deliberately choose to not review a play which can massively change a game. Isn't that the whole purpose of having the tech?

Anyways, it would have been a victory of finest margins for either team. Russia were impressive in the shootout holding their nerve like that.

The Russian defender holding Ramos did look like a pen to me, but eh, Spain should be winning that game comfortably. 120 minutes of possession without purpose, very few direct, forward passes... It's weird to think, but the way they played is just as negative as the way Russia played IMO. They were taking no risks at all.

Great for the hosts to still be in though, their game in the quarters is gonna be bouncing I bet.

It was reviewed by the video ref I think, but decided not to be a penalty.

I think it was a mistake to leave Morata at home in retrospect. They should've played with Costa and Morata, and then let Silva and Isco chip crosses into the box. Would've created much more danger than this toothless tiki-taka with one striker. Their play was disappointing considering how well they played in the run up.

Non Funkable Token

Morata is the epitome of the "meh" player. Not missing him a bit. Plus his season in Chelsea wasn't good either.

Spain had several players on their way out and no coach there. Thanks to the Federation and especially thanks to f*cking Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez for announcing Lopetegui's sign 2 days before the start of the WC. Thanks a lot. I'm not telling Lopetegui is a master coach but that episode was too much to handle for the team. And I'll laugh my ass when he's dispatched mid-season, see it.

Wow, Denmark scored a goal so fast. Like in the first minute. What a fast team they got there. Congratulations, Denmark.

EDIT: Mandzukic just scored a goal in the third minute. This is a excellent one.

He has a slightly better scoring record than Costa in the national team though. I just felt spain needed an extra striker, and I'm not sure I liked the ones that came from the bench that much.

Hah, only 9 seconds off my fastest goal prediction in the prediction thread. Good for me.

You might be on to something tbh, Spain looked like a different team when they went 2 up top at the end of the match. Wasn't enough, obviously, but the midfield started passing forward and the forwards began dragging CB's around, they just didn't have enough time.

Tiki-Taka is very demanding in terms of team coordination, and the role of the striker. Spain have struggled with it, and in stead of trying to play like 2011 Barca, they could've tried playing like Real. Real generally has Cristiano and Benzema in the box, and players like Isco and Marcelo chip in crosses. It's very effective, and it is a much easier way to create danger than ripping open a team with short passes.

Players like Iniesta and Isco, though technically geniuses, do not have that much scoring potential. Iniesta has made less goals in his career than Ramos. So to have only one striker compensate for this is too little. In the run up to the World Cup it looked like it was no problem at all though.

Spain was awful. Just passing the ball around, aimlessly, running the game down, hoping for that one sweet opening to get a goal in. They didn't even score a goal, with it being a own goal by the Russian defender (how the hell was he marking the player with his back completely to the ball?!).

Good riddance to them. But I agree with TheRipper, those two spots could have been more well served by Morocco and Iran, who were playing some pretty decent football but were unlucky with their finishes etc.

I hope the day of Spain's tiki-taka is done. This Spanish team was a bore compared to the 2008-2012 one.

I was really pissed off yesterday and quite sad to be honest. I have always said that there is a big difference if you loose when you play well and when you play like s*hit. And yesterday, Spain played awful, just like we had news doing all tournament.

What makes me want to throw myself out the window is the fact that the Spanish press is clueless. They are "shocked" and can't understand "What happened?" "How did this happen?"... Really? Are you f*cking kidding me right now?

This happen because we use a system that was great in 2008-2012 but it's useless right now. Tiki Taka has been horrible for us for years... look at yesterday match, 90% completed passes and huge possession and we still struggle to score a goal... Why? Because we don't have strikers and NOBODY shoots. Why can't Silva, Asensio, Iniesta, Isco, Aspas... Shoot like the other national teams? Why can't Spain have a Cavani that aims and shoots or like Di Maria did against France, Why?

I am jealous that the Argentinian press where very good at pointing out what was wrong in their national team, without caring whining might ofend, but the Spanish press instead of focusing on criticizing the obsolete system we use, they critize the players... FFS!!! Those players are the ones that won La Liga, a Champions league, the premier league with city... give me a f*cking break. The only player that actually failed was De Gea, the rest did what they could.

We have failed the last three tournaments that we have played. I think it's time to go back to the lab and try a new formula because the one we came out with, it NOT working at all.
