Argentina played how I expected them to. Dodgy at the back, lacking cohesion up top. Thought this would be a tight game, but also thought they'd just sneak it.

ย

Credit to Iceland, they've got a lot of heart.

VAR just doesn't feel right, too many damn penalties lol, after Peru Denmark game, here it is again.

Iceland completely annulled Messi. Completely. Doesn't help that the Argentinian team is still not cohesive at all in the front, everyone seemed to be playing a different game than Messi.ย

ย

And if Iceland was just a tad more clinical, they could have even snatched a win. Good game.

ย

As for VAR, it's growing pains. It'll become more normal and accepted as it gets more use. I welcome it.

Only seen the Australia/France game, so can't comment on the others but thought Australia did alright,ย defense held up well but just did not look like scoring at all. Could not mount any real effective chances. Don't seem to have that ability to pull a goal out of nowhere like Pogba did.ย

ย

Glad we have van Maarwijk as coach for the Cup, we look so much more organized. Shame that he wont be sticking around...once again going back to recycled Australian hacks as coach. Bah!

ย

VAR...well all I can say is I hope it doesn't have a negative impact in a major game. Different angle shown in the Australian game shows the Frenchย probably shouldn't have had a penalty but the ref had only one view to go from. Oh well.ย

The issue with VAR is that it won't fix the problem of some decisions coming down to opinion and because it's new different and in somepeoples eyes stupid/pointless/not fitting with "tradition", a ref who goes to a VAR review and gives a pen that some people believe isn't a pen will cause way more drama than a ref who does the same without VAR, especially if he changes his decision to do so. It's a win when VAR gets it right but it's lose lose when VAR gets it wrong and that's unlikely to change anytime soon.

ย

I think a potentially great thing to come out of is linesmen not flagging tight offside calls incase they're wrong, so play can continue and if it goes in they can check it with VAR for offside. That will be a big lowkey improvement IMO, not many things more frustrating than seeing your team in 1v1/2v1 or whatever and have your team be flagged offside only for the replays to show it was the wrong decision.

Yeah they keep losing the ball so often, very unsecure first half. Way to much pressure on all the german players in this worldcup. Schweinsteiger and Lahm and other players just created a void that can't be filled, because they retired. Mexico is clearly the better team in this match so far, they at least keep the ball and don't make so many little mistakes.

ย

Of course i still hope the germans can turn the game around and win. :D

ย

Edit: After the 60th minute the germans play a bit more accurate and coordinated.

Edit2: Marco Reus is a total game changer, but i still wonder why they didn't let Gomez play instead of Werner.

Edit3: Damn i'm so dissapointed. Mexico won with one goal. 1:0. But they deserved it, really the germans really sucked the whole first hour.

Rooting for Brazil as in every World Cup. They've a good chance in this one after seeing their performance in the qualifiers. Kinda reminded me of the good ol' Brazil.ย

I know it's still too early, and it's Germany after all, but not looking good so far. Gomez is just not what he used to be, and Werner was not very impressive either. They lack CF's now that Klose and Podolski are in retirement, also not calling Gotze might prove costly too.

ย

GG Mexico for a spirited win too.

Mexico were a bit unlucky not to get at least one more, they were brilliant even if they did tire a lot in the second half. Germany's got problems all over, up front, midfield, fullbacks. They don't look like they have a plan.

Weird day for results. Found that game to be pretty boring overall.ย

ย

Glad Serbia won, but would have preferred the Swiss not to take anything fromย this game, as they're the main competition for the 2nd spot.

The smaller nations playing with out fear is making this World Cup preeeetty interesting, and unpredictable.

Gonna be an exciting WC surely. Except Spain despite their draw, noone's game really impressed me so far, everyone else are very neck to neck right now.

This world cup has been awesome! None of the favorites so far have made a big splash, and the smaller teams are playing very, very well.

ย

Mexico deserved a couple more goals past Germany, but the 3 points is what matter.

Serbia could have put some more past Costa Rica too, but I guess the debut nerves were strong.

ย

Gotta say, not a boring match so far.

No 0-0's so far, no team has played THAT safe yet. But England do play tomorrow, so, ya'know.

This Englandย game illustrates why I hate football

ย

Kyle walkerย barely touches some Tunisianย = penaltyย

ย

Harry Kane gets rugby tackled in the box from a corner by a Tunisian = no penaltyย

ย

Also, a playerย gets hit with the ball then acts as if he's just been punched in the torso by a prime Mike Tyson.

ย

An awful, inconsistent, wimpy & overrated mess of a sport.ย

I can't help but notice that Kyle Walker makes a lot of decisive errors. He made decisive errors against Liverpool in the Champions League, and I think he does too much clumsy things really.

Walker in CB has never convinced me, not sure why we persist with him there. Thankfully, though, we have Harry Kane - and thank f*ck for that.

Horrendous use of VAR in this game. Kane could and should have had two penalties in the game.

ย

Typical England performance. Really need to get that finishing up to scratch.

I found the best description here https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-cup/0/var-rules-used-2018-world-cup/

Pretty much it's up to the video referee from what we've seen now, he signals the main through earpiece. If they made a decision(like with red card review in Serbia game) they will inform the referee, in other instances, on pitch main referee will go to the screen on pitch, see the replay and make a subjective decision based on it.

All I can say after last night is, 'phew'.

ย

Yeah, it was typical England.
