Are LC and VC stories ever coming to PS4?

There were rumors of them getting an ESRB rating quite a while back. 10 months ago or so? But since then it has been silent.

Any insight as to why it hasn't happened yet?

Sony has done a piss poor job of bringing PS2 titles to PS4 though.

I doubt it. R* doesn't really care about Liberty City and Vice City Stories. They're too focused on RDR 2 and GTAO.

Hmmm nice bike

As nice as it would be to see the stories games on the PS4, I doubt it's gonna happen. LCS on mobile did not sell well at all (nor did most of the mobile releases of the III-era GTA titles), and VCS has so many songs that would need to either be re-licensed or outright cut from the game since they're probably even more expensive to license nowadays (which is what happened with VC and SA, and then IV recently without even needing to be re-released). Rockstar probably doesn't think it's worth paying the licensing fees if it's gonna follow the same pattern of not making their sales expectations.

Those games were listed and rated by the ESRB last year, sadly (and mysteriously) is taking it so long to arrive to PS4. Has been more a year and people still waiting for them.

EDIT:

Even all other titles announced to arrive to the PS4 as Midnight Club 3: Dub Edition Remix still there... missing from the PS4 emulation/backward compatibilty as well.

Actually I don't understand why Rockstar doesn't want to release these games on PS4. Do you know that, at least in theory, the PS4 is completely backwards compatible with PS2 games? Soft-modded PS4s could run any PS2 backup in the .pkg format (of course these backups are leagl only if you own the original disc)!

They'd have just to add some trophies and modify a little bit the original PS2 version (they can't release just the unmodified version, some changes must be done in the code), it shouldn't be that hard for a big company like Rockstar.

Anyway if ESRB rated all these games on PS4 there will be a reason, unless they like to rate random stuff.

I've only played LCS on my PSP and it has been a terrible experience, but I'd like to play both LCS and VCS on my PS4... Just like GTA III/VC/SA that I've completed at 100% (+ Platinum trophy).

It f*cking better.  And I really hope it doesn't end up going to PSnow.

Most likely what is holding it up is the music that sh*t costs money.

Liberty City Executioner

Unfortunately, this'll probably never happen. On the double negative side, they'll probably never be available for any Xbox console, which is a huge bummer as both games seem to be up my alley as they're both about mobsters and take place on the east coast. Same goes for CTW.

Having the Stories games on PC legitimately, without emulations or total conversions, would make me very happy even if cutting music is required. Modding could fix that. This would definitely revive my love for this series, which has been rather muted ever since I last played V like three years ago. Haven't played them in like a decade, back when my brother's PS2 was still alive.

Doubt it at this point which is a shame, GTA VCS has always been underrated

No GTA game is bad, but if I had to choose, it would be VCS. That game kinda sucked. LCS was also the same. No character development or lack of character development that is.  Not worth their time to port over to the ps4.

The chances of LCS/VCS coming to PS4 are as low as the chances of Elvis coming back to life.

I was thinking of getting this the other day on my PS3, as I enjoyed playing it on the PS2, only to discover that it was no longer there. Ah, well. I guess I could always go back and play it on the PS2.

Yeah no way is it getting one now, I heard that it was because of  the music licenses that ran out and Rockstar doesn't want to pay people again. But who knows. Its a shame though

I've seen many say the reason is because "me" lol Phil Collin would be copyright. But then so why isn't LCS atleast on PS4?... And VCS is on PS3... Nah they just dont sell as good as the other 3.

I still hope for a (im)possible Rockstar Games 25th anniversary's announcement for both games (and also CTW) for all consoles & PC...

VCS was on PS3 and PS Vita, I think it was removed around 2017. Given that VCS was released in 2006 and most GTAs had their soundtracks butchered after their 10th anniversary, I think it's pretty safe to assume that many song licenses expired and they didn't even bother to renew them. I personally don't think it has to do with Phil Collins because AFAIK he's on good terms with Rockstar and the fact that more of his songs appeared in GTA IV and V proves it.

I actually don't know if LCS is still available on PS3, I know that Sony are removing tons and tons of games from there but LCS didn't have lots of licensed songs... And this clearly isn't an issue because the mobile ports are still sold on iOS and Android. LCS on PS3 was a disaster though, it ran an already bad port below 15 FPS most of the times... This is probably one of the reasons as to why the "PS2 Classics" didn't do so well for Rockstar.

LCS and VCS kinda go together IMO, it doesn't make a lot of sense to bring only LCS to PS4/PS5. Unfortunately these games will be stuck in the 7th Generation, there's not a huge demand for them and it would require Rockstar to spend lots of money just to save VCS soundtrack.

Yes. Rob Nelson even said that they would love to work with Phil Collins again during an interview for The Contract update two years ago. It could be a polite answer but I don't think they would ever mention him that way if there is a kind of feud between them.

I doubt that it's necessarily because of a "feud" per-se. But these days, In the Air Tonight would be a massively expensive song to license. Even if Phil Collins gave his personal approval, the record company would still demand their share since they "own" the song. If they couldn't that song alone back, then there comes the task of reworking things for the story to continue to flow properly.

I agree. Besides, Phil Collins & Genesis sold their catalogs in 2022. Wonder how it will directly affect the previous games soundtracks (GTAV especially) in the coming years and the possible GTA VI tracklist.

VCS will likely never get ported to anything ever again. They licensed Phil Collins to make an appearance and I doubt R* would be willing to sacrifice anything from their mountain of gold to renew his contract for re-releases. That's why it's not even on mobile phones

The fact that Phil Collins appears as himself is not a roadblock, like all the actors that are featured in the GTA seires he got paid to give his voice to a character. No one ever worried about SA not getting re-released because Samuel L. Jackson plays Officer Tenpenny... In both cases Rockstar bought a performance, there's nothing to renew here :)

The only thing I could think of are image rights (because he appears as himself), but I don't think those need to be renewed.

Music licenses on the other hand work differently, these have to be renewed and, as we all know, Rockstar had issues with these across all games. VCS is not getting re-released only because it's not a popular entry in the GTA franchise, it may be the 2nd best selling game on the PSP but on PS2 barely anyone bought it. According to various sources, VCS only sold 6 million copies, less than a quarter of what SA was able to achieve. VCS soundtrack is a beast that can only be compared to VC, I wouldn't be surprised if they think it's financially not worth to renew them. Of course "In the Air Tonight" has to be renewed because it's a central part of the story, but in general it seems that Rockstar were always able to get Phil Collins and Genesis songs relatively easy (GTA IV and V have some of them).

Another major roadblock that I hardly see brought up is the fact that this is a PSP / PS2 game. III, VC and SA all had a PC version on which War Drum Studios (now GSG) could work on for the mobile ports (and later for TDE). LCS was in the same situation of VCS, but back in 2015 the PS2 wasn't extremely obsolete and more people were familiar with it. Working on a port of a PS2 game in 2024 sounds like hell, but I wonder if Lucid Games were instructed to do an initial work for VCS mobile.

I personally think that both LCS and VCS would sell a lot if they get re-released because people are always hungry for more GTAs, and for many these 2 would be "new" titles. The return on investment for Rockstar is nowhere near Trilogy territory though, so I can understand them not wanting to bring back these 2 games. It's sad, but this is the reality.

What I really blame them for (and T2) is the DMCA take down on re3, reVC and reLCS. VCS was without a doubt the hardest one to reverse engineer, again because it's only on PSP / PS2 and there are no "mobile studio f*cks up" episodes to take advantage of... But it was probably the only opportunity to have a modern native version of VCS running on PC (and jailbroken consoles).
