'Colored people' refers specifically to black Americans. 'Person/people of color' is used to refer to folks that aren't 'white', and is often self-applied.

whats stupid is that here in the good ole USA. if you are mixed with either black or white, then you are black or white, whatever the other half you are mixed with doesn't get recognized. I find that offensive and its basically in away discriminataion, but no one speaks on it in the media.
