I'd say International Relations would be the best route, it's a much broader course and as the name would suggest it's internationally orientated covering topics such as global governance, international economics etc making it directly relevant to diplomacy. I'd also argue it's infinitely more interesting, but that's of course subjective.

Really helpful post, dude! Thank you :)

It does if you have anything worthwile to show. The arbitrary number of years is just that, a number with which you're supposed to prove your experience and expertise in that particular field. If you can prove it in any other way that number doesn't mean anything, the same way a college degree doesn't

The point is it doesn't apply across the board. More so in white collar jobs. And doubly so when employers can afford to be picky.

Of course it does. Competencies are universal across a lot of fields. Im not saying you'll get a CEO job with zero years of prior experience, but as a college student you can easily get a decent paying job if you just put a little effort into it

We all know mankind needs the earth and sun to exist but my question is does the earth need man?

It needs man to act more like every other creature on earth and stop actively trying to destroy the delicate atmospheric conditions needed to sustain our continued existence as a species.

As long as you know people in that job. There is no concern for personal abilities, skills or natural talents. It's about who you know, plain and simple.... and dead presidents count toward that, 150%.

I'm having a great day actually, I'm very happy.

I'm not happy when I see you post stupid sh*t, so quit posting stupid sh*t and I'll be happy.

Ask an actual question that means something, or f*ck off.

To try to keep this on f*cking topic...

Does anyone know what the most efficient type of rechargeable battery is?

For small applications, like AA batteries and such, as an alternative to alkaline.

Is it true that you loose the majority of the heat though your head?

It's actually not true, the only time it is true is when the head is the only part left uncovered.

A fully clothed person loses most heat through their head because that's the part that's not covered, but of the heat released by a naked person only about 10% would escape through the head.

As for this parallel 'discussion,' it is complete nonsense that business employers are only interested in white collar experience and connections. Businesses have an objective of making profit, and while there will always be an element of nepotism, the real aim is to employ a person who can do the job, without these people any company will fail.

Any experience counts: working a minimum wage job proves you are capable of working full-time, believe it or not this isn't always true even of top graduates. Talking about school projects shows you take interest in your work and are provides believable evidence of your achievements. While this may not put you ahead of an equivalent person with existing office experience on paper, in the interview you could project yourself as a much more trustworthy and amicable person for the job.

Natural talent doesn't mean everything, you can be smart enough to launch a rocket into space, but if you aren't a dependable person who can apply those skills when needed you are of no value as an employee.

The biggest fault of generation Y is expecting everything on a plate, hence the tendency to complain and blame the system when things don't immediately work, don't be that guy because that's exactly the kind of person who doesn't get jobs done. As dice says, keep investing in gaining experience at whatever level you can, do it well with initiative, and present it in a convincing way to any potential employer and you will have no problem in the long term.

Like I said, it depends.

A few years ago, there was an entry level network administration job advertised here. Among their laundry list of requirements, was the prospective employee have several years of experience specifically in network administration positions. Not two years flipping burgers at McDonalds, or stocking shelves. A friend applied for said job and ticked every other item on the list (including experience with the obscure software that only they used, really) but was turned down solely on the grounds of not having the work experience required (as per the employer's words).

The IT industry here is notorious for things of this nature. I also recall one firm hiring level 1s for their call center. Another scenario where they wanted X amount of experience working in call centers and were sticking to that with all the inflexibility of a steel pipe.

Edit: Let us not assume that people are complaining. I've not been stung with it as of yet, just regaling the way things are in some places.

Double edit: On a positive note, get motivated and overcome sh*t.

The key is to apply to a breadth of employers, by the sounds of it your friend applied to a very corporate body with a large number of applications, the first thing such an organisation implements is a box-ticking exercise to thin down the list. In principle this could well mean potentially losing the best candidate, but there is no other rational way of choosing a shortlist when the HR department has limited time and resources so can only review a few applications in detail. Or it could be the case that the HR department is too rigid, in which case it's that company's loss.

However, I can guarantee you that not all companies will be like this, there will be smaller firms (often with fewer applications, due to their size attracting less attention) who will be strategically growing and will inspect applications with more discretion. Each application of course needs to be tailored towards each job: many people hand out 100s of CVs and get little response and get the impression the market is neglecting them, but each company will want to feel like you want to be with them plus will be looking for specific skills (for instance something that resembles call centre experience).

It is very subjective, and you need to think from an employer's point of view and also be prepared to bear the brunt of potential inefficiencies in an employer's recruitment process. Employers want nothing more than to meet an enthusiastic person they can trust, fill the position and call it a day, but we are talking about a £20,000+/year investment so they really need you to sell it to them

Id' like to ask some career advices from Raavi or anyone willing to help like my friend Black on the last page.

So I'm studying physics at college and I'm doing well, I really like the career and all but, I'd like to move out to another country a few years after I graduate and work outside. How does that sound? What should I do in order to improve my chances of getting a job in other places?

None really.

Bush Sr never funded al-Qaeda; he didn't even fund the Taliban in all honesty- this is a common misconception people seem to have, believing that the Afghan Mujahedeen and Taliban are the same entity when they're categorically not. The War in Iraq has certainly been a contributing factor in the current Islamic State conflict but it's not the root cause; Salafist Jihadism even in it's most modern form predates US interventionism in the Middle East. To the best of my knowledge the only indirect impact Western funding of the Syrian opposition has had on IS is when they've seized materiel destined for, or belonging to, other groups as part of internal fighting. The conflict between expansionist political Sunni Islam and other religious and political groups is centuries old and much of it boils down to that.

Can't go wrong with some sweet and sour chicken (don't forget the duck sauce). If not, go with the boneless spare ribs or some lo mein.

Eventually you would sign into something with an OAuth account(you may not even know it) and you'd be back to the internet knowing who you are and who you know(have known, or somehow though someway in all your internet history most likely know...toss in the fact that it knows your location...and your neighbor down the street has logged in through OAuth - well, it's gonna ask you if you know them too).

e:

@Chinese food:

Kung Pao Chicken. Can't beat it - it has peanuts in it. Oh oh oh and cashew chicken is also good if you likea da nut in your food.

Go to notification settings and turn off email notifications. (Not being a smartass).

Why, thank you! I'll now be in my room banging my head on the wall for being a blind dumbass :)

To be honest, I really hadn't remembered that there was a notifications settings section. Doesn't help that my account has Pirate English set as its main language
