As far as the cracker conversation goes, remember that we're talking about a group of people that, up until very recently, weren't allowed to vote, weren't allowed to marry white people or even drink from the same bloody water fountain. Obviously the door doesn't swing quite so wide in both directions here.

for a second i thought you were talking about women untill i saw the marry thing lol

Still relevant. Back in the early time.

Not that long ago. Less than 100 years ago, in my country, a Black man's vote were 3/5ths of a white man's and no state allowed women to vote.

I'm talking about the 50's, the 60's. It wasn't as long ago as some folks would like to believe,

Its ok to be racist as long as your not white.

I sincerely hope you don't agree with this (although, realistically, it's how it tends to be).

If you judge someone by something as stupidly trivial as the colour of their skin, then you're a miserable excuse of a human being, no matter what your background is or how much your race may have suffered. If you do that, you're no different than the ones you call "racists".

do you live in the states?

As true as that may be, it still doesn't make it okay for any group to be prejudiced or racist. You can't justify one group's racism by showing comparably worse examples of it directed at them. That's what Malcolm X advocated, for example, and that's why he's almost unanimously seen as a racist today. Two wrongs don't make a right, remember? All that does is turn the victims into the perpetrators and happily ignore their prejudice because the other group "started it!".

OMG Kevin Nash, WTF thought he was dead LOL

We've been over this, Crokey. Kevin Nash can never die. Tear his quad, sure. Die? He'll die when Ric Flair stops bleeding.

Or when Cena doesn't kick out at 2.

Is that supposed to make any difference? Is racism more acceptable in certain countries? Is it acceptable to be racist because of whatever happened in the past? No, whatever historical facts you may present, true though they are, do not justify an inherently wrong attitude, no matter who's practising it. Racism is a stupid, retrograde idea that is absolutely, categorically and unexceptionally wrong.

Racist language it unacceptable? So is 240hz television.

The larger problem with racism, and when it becomes truly heinous, is when it limits, punishes, or damages the victim. That's the insidious effect of racism, and it's almost, in relation, immeasurable in one direction.

So yes, I agree that racist language, slurs, and attitudes are all disgusting (when they aren't a little funny) but you can't honestly believe that they all share the same connotations and histories. White people... We don't get held back by 'cracker'. We don't lose jobs, apartments, or loan applications because of that word.

Hmm, not sure I can believe that anyone's losing jobs or apartments over being black, unless they're really dealing with a huge bigot. Bigots and racists usually (and thankfully) aren't in positions of power, because they're too ignorant and simple-minded for that to happen, at least here (and there are lots of black people here). The sooner we let all the fictional "privileges" go and forget about about whether reverse racism is acceptable as a form of petty revenge, the sooner racism will be a thing of the past.

They are, it still happens in the US. I'm not sure how it is in Portugal, but every country I've visited there have been privileged classes and under privileged, discriminated against classes. I understand your desire to try to just start with a clean slate, it's noble, but it's un-realistic. The discriminated against are frustrated and have a right to be, and ignoring the issues that made them so is only going to make things worse. Think of it this way: if you can try to ignore it and get through your day, you are a part of the privileged class. Those who are being discriminated against cannot ignore it, because they are reminded when then have to interact with other humans and are treated like less than their more privileged "peers".

You'd be frankly surprised and disgusted by many of the conversations I've had over the past decade in the communications industry. You may have ideals, which are commendable, but I live in one of the most liberal cities in the western world - there have been yoga protests - and I can tell you from experience that racism and sexism are still a thing. And it ain't white males taking the short end of it.

Well, in Portugal the racist demographic is quite small, I feel. Actually, I'd say homophobia, despite not really being a pressing issue here, is probably more relevant, considering recent events.
I don't feel privileged, nor do any of my black colleagues feel discriminated against. I mean, sure, there's the odd racist, usually +60-year-old rednecks who may or may not have fought in the Colonial War. My uncle served as well and was frequently punished by his superiors for denouncing the disgusting acts some other soldiers practised out of sheer racial/colonial hatred.

I know that we can't just forget what happened, nor do I feel that we should. I'm just saying that's no reason to demonize a white man for, well, just being white, because that's also racism.

(Off-topic: Otter, what do you work in? Genuinely curious, as a communications student :) )

@ajdude1
I'm sorry to hear that... The only prejudiced kid I've ever dealt with was a spoiled brat in elementary school who insisted on taunting my mate who was Belgian (go figure). I found that a good slap straightened him out, and, although it may not have changed his mind, it gave him some insight into the social consequences of saying that kind of thing in the real world.

I see a lot of interesting debate on what racism is. What I need to someone to explain to me is that if someone from the Akan tribe called a black america a "ngr" or "slave" are they consider racist?

The fact someone says something doesn't make them racist or not, necessarily, but unless spoken out of ignorance, calling someone an "N-word" or a black American a slave would probably indicate racist tendencies.

I can't stand racism and i understand that it can go both ways with black and white people mostly where im from. I hate it when another black person thinks that i should side with them because im black as well & or that they they can never be racist, only white folks are.

Black or white or any race in general, i can't f*ck with you if you are racist, period. Im definitely very aware that racism still does exist and i have experienced it alot more then i would want to. Me personally, i look past the color of someones skin and care more about personality and im not brainwashed by the f*cking american media racism and stereotyping like most in this country are.

Some people are just stuck in the 20th Century, theres not much you can do about it, being a racist is a choice at the end of the day, no one is born that way.
