How viable is a career in diplomacy/foreign policy? I was talking to a relative the other day and she brought it up as a possible career perspective for me. I hadn't thought of it before, but it seems to suit me. What I don't know is whether a degree in Linguistics or Philosophy will allow/help me to pursue this career?

Any thoughts on this?

 

Philosophy probably not, linguistics yeah but you'd be more suited going for poli sci or IR or economics if you want to go into that field. Keep in mind it is pretty difficult to get into, civil service examinations are brutal for it and it may be a few years of doing related work until you can get into the government. Not the field for me but I know many persuing it given my location and that is the rundown.

To be honest, I still haven't chosen an exact degree (too much stuff I'd like to get into), but it is always good to have information on the professional outcomes of each field.

I read an article over at the Art of Manliness that was basically an interview with a diplomat in which he provided insight into his profession. He did mention the stringency of the exams and said it covered many areas of general knowledge. I'll look into this and reevaluate my situation.

 

No problem, the school I go to is tied for the most people going into the Foreign Service so like I said I know more than a few people that want to do it... just because the exams are hard though doesn't mean that you would be stuck with nothing. My cousin for example is working at an NGO and doing fine while she is trying to test into the Foreign Service, so don't be discouraged by the exams.

I just noticed that foreign policy is among your interests in your profile, nice! I don't know if it's drastically different, but the information I've looked at pertains to the US, mostly. It's easier to find than Portuguese government information, and I guess the general idea is the same. Anyway, I'm going to do some research on the current diplomatic requirements in my country and see what i can do.

I don't know why, but the idea of travelling and meeting dignitaries, presidents and such really allures me.

Yeah I mean working in the Foreign Service is arguably a pretty similar process across Western countries. Honestly don't be afraid to make a call to the Foreign Affairs ministry or whatever you guys call it there and just ask some questions, 9 times out of 10 the guy/girl answering will be more than happy if not ecstatic to talk about his/her career.

I think he was just trying to garner attention with his vague suicide-related questions. I doubt he would actually pull it off.

Gawd man, stop speculating about people committing suicide. You're like those 24 hour rolling news channels. We've got one "analyst" discussing the fact their lives are/were sad and depressing, another one looking for hidden meanings in their profiles that could be interpreted as a suicide note, and someone else is no doubt peering through their letterboxes/windows looking for piled up mail and starving pets.

ive been at college for the last 2 years, I left school with next to nothing... should I carry on at college for the next 2 years and get 3 A levels and 6 GCSEs? but I will be about 20 when I leave, what should I do?
