Hi, guys. I've opened a topic in the ''Technology'' subforum about this problem too, but I figured it would be good if I asked it here too.

 

Nn the last few months or so, my PC is gone over the line with the memory crap and I'd be very grateful if anyone could solve the problem I'm having or point me in the direction of solving it. I don't know what to do anymore.

 

I'm using a 32-bit Windows 7, Service pack 1. My C drive space gets filled up ridiculously fast. I uninstalled a big program I had about 2 weeks ago (at most) because I had to free up space on that drive. When I did that, I had almost 10 GB of free space on my C drive. About 2 weeks passed since then and my C drive's capacity right now is a little under 2 GB. I haven't had this problem before and I have this computer for a couple of years already.

 

I tried with disc cleanup, Spybot searches, emptying my cache on both Internet Explorer and Chrome cause I'm using both.. None of it works at all. After using the Internet Explorer for let's say 30 minutes, disk space on my C drive gets smaller by about 500 MB. It's crazy and definitely, something's off.

 

Over 8 GB of memory in less than 2 weeks is absurd. Please, any kind of help is much appreciated, the faster the better.

Personally I am a big fan of WinDirStat.

 

It lets you see a graphical representation of all the files on your drive(s) and the space they take up, you can click on any block (representing a file) and it'll tell you what and where it is.

 

For instance, I have selected gta3.img which contains most of the models and textures used in GTA San Andreas:

 

Use it to scan what is using up all the space, you are likely to find some random large files that you forgot about or didn't realise were so large (e.g. uncompressed video). If you don't know what the big files are, you can Google their name and see whether they are a system file (e.g. temporary hibernation file) or malicious, then take appropriate action.

After using the Internet Explorer for let's say 30 minutes, disk space on my C drive gets smaller by about 500 MB. It's crazy and definitely, something's off.

That might just be the page file. It stores regions of virtual memory that don't fit in the physical memory. Switching over to 64 bit OS and increasing amount of RAM will help with that. It sounds like it isn't your only problem, but it should help anyways.

How viable is a career in diplomacy/foreign policy? I was talking to a relative the other day and she brought it up as a possible career perspective for me. I hadn't thought of it before, but it seems to suit me. What I don't know is whether a degree in Linguistics or Philosophy will allow/help me to pursue this career?

Any thoughts on this?

Funny thing; wouldn't it be not doing the opposite by posting a topic on it? I mean a topic is made for something normally around here. If such a thing actually existed it wouldn't exist because it works the opposite way

 

Anyway, those party popper things, can they produce enough force to fire a small object enough to do damage? I noticed they shoot the confetti at a decent distance which got me thinking about they're force.

In your opinions, what is the best method for learning languages? I want to learn Russian (I know some of it, was taught in school for 6 years, but I learnt f*ck all there unfortunately). Then German and/or French. I was thinking I need to learn the grammar rules and then words. Then I could string phrases together myself, but... I don't even know why I'm asking, because I have no driving force in me, I won't keep at it.

Ahh okay i get it now but it was confusing, Sadly CNN is my go-to for breaking news since i don't like Faux News or MSNBC so i go to CNN but i relie on ABC/NBC to give me my daily World/US news and local stations for local news.

 

Yup, We made it too 300 pages but still have 462 more pages to go before we can claim victory.

To be honest, I still haven't chosen an exact degree (too much stuff I'd like to get into), but it is always good to have information on the professional outcomes of each field.

I read an article over at the Art of Manliness that was basically an interview with a diplomat in which he provided insight into his profession. He did mention the stringency of the exams and said it covered many areas of general knowledge. I'll look into this and reevaluate my situation.

Another thing worth adding, I'm not sure if it's the same where you live and i'm not 100% sure it still works this way here but at least into the 00's it was still like this when i had a family member who worked for the state dept with embassors/diplomats in the U.S diplomats aren't really chosen on merit or seniority you have to work your way up the ladder to diplomats and you need to reach certain goals and if you didn't reach those goals than you would be left without a postion for months even years.

 

It's a dog eat dog world and you'll be bitten each way you look.
