Like Alien, I too am having trouble remembering something: does anyone know the name of that incredible, elderly Commedia dell'arte actor? I wanted to recommend him to a friend today, but totally forgot his name... He's in his 80s, I think. For the life of me, I can't remember or find his name anywhere. Can anyone help me with this?

Edit: Just remembered the name. It was Ferruccio Soleri! Woohoo ^^

Whether you actually need a degree or not is going to be dependent on the field you want to enter as a career choice. In some fields, it's absolutely required. Others, it might be nice to have but you can get by without it.

And if you're the boss you don't need no schoolin'. And if you live in a country where they've inexplicably dropped the corporate tax rate to half the personal rate or better, well, ain't nothing better than entrepreneurializin'.

Sadly not the case here, where taxes are f*cking atrocious :/

I earn 5.4k (EBT) a year and pay 35% tax, shut your piehole.

35%?! Now that is something...
Since 2012, my grandparents have had a ridiculous tax on their pensions, as part of the austerity measures undertaken by our jackoff of a Prime Minister. Unbelievable. And to think that in a few years I'll be out of college and probably won't find a job... f*ck me.

edit: after looking at official websites, I found out that income tax rates can get up to 48% in some instances here. What the actual f*ck...

What would you guys say the best way is to learn a language?

I really want to learn Turkish, my dad never taught me when I was growing and I feel I'm missing a big part of my heritage. I know some of the basics, but I'm not sure what the best way to go about it is, as a lot of you guys aren't native English speakers, how do yo find the best way to learn?

My advice is to join a Turkish forum and grow a thick monobrow.

Well, in my case, I've always had a great deal of contact with English, and since it has such an overwhelming presence in all sorts of media (especially books, films and games), it was easy to become proficient at it as I grew up. Since Turkish hasn't got the same sort of international projection or visibility, this is a little harder if not rather impractical.

The starting point would be getting a textbook and a teacher if you can find one. Doesn't have to be a formal teacher, as that might be hard to get, but someone whom you know is fluent in Turkish. Maybe a relative, since you have Turkish heritage?

Then I'd say you could get a Turkish pen pal to get an idea of the conversational use of the language as well as the idiomatic expressions and stuff like that. That's what I did to compliment my French studies and it helped tremendously. Maybe you could also buy Turkish magazines if you can find them, immerse yourself in the language, so to speak.

If you can afford it Rossea Stone (sp?) is a good way to learn

How viable is a career in diplomacy/foreign policy? I was talking to a relative the other day and she brought it up as a possible career perspective for me. I hadn't thought of it before, but it seems to suit me. What I don't know is whether a degree in Linguistics or Philosophy will allow/help me to pursue this career?

Forums, games, watch TV series with Turkish subtitles. Learn the basics and simply talk Turkish with your Dad if you can.

no, you don't. You pay 50% if you make over 600 thousand SEK, something which I highly doubt that you do.

Good question. I'm in a similar position, but I did a language in sixth form (high school) so I sort of have the basis for how to learn a foreign language.

When I was in sixth form I'd play games with the subtitles in the language I was learning--learnt a fair bit of vocabulary that way. The primary thing is reading/speaking the language as often as you can. Visit Turkish news sites as often as you can and see if you can find people with whom to speak the language online via Skype or something.

@Mod pay: I'm pretty sure they're paid per ban.

These are great questions, might I add.

Depends on what you are doing it for but in general no. It just makes the process quicker.
