Maybe "popular" isn't the best word for it, but North Korea still sees a lot of boot-leg VHS use.

VHS and audio cassettes are pretty useless as a format.

 

Cassettes are one of the most expensive consumer media to manufacture, and the actual content has a much lower quality than both predecessors (e.g. vinyl or film), and successors (e.g. MP3 and MP4). Tape mechanisms are also bulky, delicate, complex and require head cleaning maintenance. Home tapes degrade badly over time, try playing your old cassettes: many of them will snap in the hi-fi just by trying to play them.

 

They are just about as impractical as it gets. Good riddance.

 

Edit: I don't include business-grade digital cassettes used in places such as CERN etc. as these are still the cheapest way of storing huge amounts of data, especially when the application only requires the data to be read as one continuous stream.

Some of you might not be old enough to remember, but if you took your rental tape back to the video store without rewinding it the would charge you. "Be kind, rewind" was the motto. Also, there was a time where you would go to a physical store to rent videos rather than downloading them nowadays. Quaint I know...

I remember the day my dad brought home one of those rewinding units, so we didn't have to wear the VCR. It felt like real luxury...
