Why can a Microwave transform 120v into 4000v but an electric dryer can't even transform 120v into 240v and needs 240v from the source? Is there a reason for this or are manufacturers lazy and don't want to build a dryer with a transformer? Because I think there would be a place in the market for an electric dryer that can be plugged into 120v

There is a subtle difference between 120V outlet and 240V outlet, which has to do with phases of the current. The 240V outlet is typically two line wires coming out of a split-phase transformer. But I don't think it matters to the dryer. You should be able to step up that voltage to 240V and use that.

 

The reasons it's not usually done are twofold. First, transformer for that load is going to be big, heavy, and a bit expensive. But like you said, there would probably still be market for it. The second part is current. A typical dryer will draw 10-15A at 240V. If you want to step up to 240V from 120V, you'll have to draw 20-30A instead. Odds are, your outlets simply can't take that sort of current. The one used for the dryer usually has special wiring as it is.

 

So you could have a transformer in there, but you still wouldn't be able to plug it into anything other than a specially designed outlet. And if you have that, you might as well have a 240V outlet and save on transformer costs. Wires for lower rating will be cheaper, too.
