I know stickers are usually considered vandalism, probably the same for printed posters. In most places you have to get permission from either the city, or the property owner before posting any sort of sign.

It's just a nicety. There is no need to touch base with them unless you genuinely liked on of them and wanted to grab a beer or joint with one of them. If it's a public place, like a restaurant or store or something, swinging by to be a customer is an nice way to say "hi" if you want them to keep you on their mind for whatever reason you may have.
