Does anyone else think Vice City doesn't exactly feel like 1986?

To me it feels more like 1984 for some reason. I don't know how to describe it but it just feels much more early '80s to me.

Hmmm nice bike

I can't say I ever really felt that. The only thing in VC that felt a little out of place in the time period was the goth guy on VCPR since that whole subculture seemed more like it was a thing in the 2000s, but for all I know that could have been a thing in the 80s as well. Otherwise, even though I wasn't even born yet in 1986, I thought VC definitely had a mid-1980s feel to it and Rockstar did a good job of trying to recreate the era in the game.

The Mysterious One

Well, I am not sure if goths existed in the 1980's, but I know that they existed in the 1990's. Anyway, only the bit with Mr. Zoo felt a bit anachronistic as it was clearly a parody of Steve Irwin, but he didn't become famous until the 1990's as well.

Algonquin Assassin

I'm probably biased since I was born in 1986, but it's always felt way more of an authentic representation of the mid-80s than VCS was.

Oh yeah, I forgot about Mr. Zoo. I guess at the time, Rockstar didn't care much about whether or not people like that were around or famous in the 80s, just as long as the radio shows were funny. Still, it didn't completely take away from the 80s feel of the game, they probably just thought that some of the opportunities to parody things at the time were too good to pass up.

The Coconut Kid

I love Vice City for what it is but I can see where OP is coming from. The Malibu Club is straight from the disco era and even comes complete with The Village People.

If I had to nail it down I'd say the game world feels like a recreation of the first season of Miami Vice with heavy Scarface influences. And I think it needed to be that way to work with the story and a protagonist like Tommy.

I mean the village people were pretty big in the 1980s aswell jsyk

But yea, I don't know if it was an accurate representation of 1986 because I wasn't around until ten years later. All I know is that it's a fun game and it's got some kind of 80s vibes and those are good enough for me.

The thing about Vice City for me is that it feels too late to have that Miami atmosphere it was trying to recreate from Scarface. Scarface took place in 1983, and it felt very accurate to me. Vice City, however, feels like 1983 yet takes place in 1986. This is my opinion, of course. It just feels a bit out of place.

Am Shaegar

Can't say, especially, when I am not a resident of the city in real life, nor have I visited in the past.

Though I wonder how can you spot the difference having only two years of gap?!?

I don't think 3D era graphics are that helpful to easily tell any differences, even if that was a case, except maybe the immersion based approach of "adding" something that specifically belongs to the said years.

Yes goths existed back then. Think about Robert Smith and The Cure for instance.
